    Abstract Global natural gas trade volume amounted to 1300 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2021 and it is expected to increase regarding the growing concern for low-carbon emission fuel. However, natural gas requires special infrastructure in the transportation stage such as natural gas pipelines or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants and tankers. We use a Network Game theory where natural gas supply networks are treated as edges and adopt the Link-based Flexible Network Allocation Rule (LBFN) as a solution concept that can replace the Shapley Value. Our study reveals that Russia’s efforts to build diversionary routes effectively decrease the relative bargaining power of its traditional transit countries and increase its relative bargaining power. If there had been no Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Nord Stream-2 would have come online as planned and Russia would have enjoyed high relative bargaining power as a dominant gas supplier. This is one of the underlying reasons why several European countries and the U.S. expressed strong opposition to the Nord Stream-2 project. However, if Russia cuts the gas supply to European countries as a result of recent events and the U.S. LNG penetrates into the European gas market, Russia will inevitably suffer from a huge decrease in its relative bargaining power.

    Abstract Membrane fouling caused by complex greywater synthesized by personal care products and detergents commercially available for household applications was investigated using dead-end microfiltration (MF) and analyzed systematically by a multistage Hermia blocking model as a first attempt. The highest flux decline was associated with the smallest pore size of the membrane (0.03 μm). This effectiveness was more pronounced at higher applied pressures to the membrane. A cake layer was formed on the membrane consisting mainly of silica particles present as ingredients in greywater. Although organic rejection was low by the porous MF membrane, the organic compound contributed to membrane fouling in the filtration stage. With a 0.03 μm pore size of the membrane, dominant fouling mechanisms were classified into three stages as applied pressure increased, such as complete pore blocking, intermediate pore blocking, and cake layer formation. Specifically, during the early stage of membrane filtration at 1.5 bar, membrane fouling was determined by complete pore blocking in the 0.10 μm pore size of the membrane. However, the later stage of membrane fouling was controlled mainly by intermediate pore blocking. Regardless of the applied pressure, pore constriction or standard blocking played an important role in the fouling rate with a 0.45 μm pore size of the membrane. Our results also support that complex formation can occur due to the concentration of organic and inorganic species present in simulated greywater. Thus, strategic approaches such as periodic, chemically enhanced backwashing need to be developed and tailored to remove both organic and inorganic fouling from MF membranes treating greywater.

    Abstract In response to global warming, researchers worldwide are actively investigating various techniques and institutional frameworks to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Despite numerous life cycle assessment (LCA) studies indicating that global warming effects due to lifetime energy consumption are the greatest in the building operation stage, the absence of a standard global warming potential (GWP) report based on building energy usage makes it difficult to examine realistic GWP reduction directions. In South Korea, energy data for numerous buildings were collected through the Building Energy Efficiency Certification (BEEC) for several years, with data from apartment buildings receiving the most attention.     Abstract When a low-viscosity fluid displaces into a higher-viscosity fluid, the liquid-liquid interface becomes unstable causing finger-like patterns. This viscous fingering instability has been widely observed in nature and engineering systems with two adjoined fluids. Here, we demonstrate a hitherto-unrealizable viscous fingering in a single fluid-solid interface. In a single polyelectrolyte fluid on a charge selective surface, selective ion rejection through the surface initiates i) stepwise ion concentration and viscosity gradient boundaries in the fluid and ii) electroconvective vortices on the surface. As the vortices grow, the viscosity gradient boundary pushes away from the surface, resulting viscous fingering. Comparable to conventional one with two fluids, i) a viscosity ratio ([Formula: see text]) governs the onset of this electroconvective viscous fingering, and ii) the boundary properties (finger velocity and rheological effects) - represented by [Formula: see text], electric Rayleigh ([Formula: see text]), Schmidt ([Formula: see text]), and Deborah ([Formula: see text]) numbers - determine finger shapes (straight v.s. ramified, the onset length of fingering, and relative finger width). With controllable onset and shape, the mechanism of electroconvective viscous fingering offers new possibilities for manipulating ion transport and dendritic instability in electrochemical systems.

In South Korea, energy data for numerous buildings were collected through the Building Energy Efficiency Certification (BEEC) for several years, with data from apartment buildings receiving the most attention. GWP emissions were evaluated using the data through Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design LCA. Here, we developed a model for apartment buildings to assess mutual propriety for GWP emissions (E) and energy effective area ratio (RE) during building operation to support the reduction of GWP emissions caused by lifetime operational energy consumption resulting from planning and design. We collected apartment BEEC data and used them to calculate the energy effective area ratio and GWP emissions of each building, which were then classified by energy use and source. Linear regression analysis was performed between RE and E for each classification, and the derived regression equation was developed as a GWP assessment model for apartments. The applicability of the proposed model was examined through a case study, which confirmed that the model can be used to determine design directions for reducing GWP emissions for every energy in apartments.

    Abstract With the increasing need for particulate matter (PM) monitoring, the demand for light-scattering sensors that allow for real-time measurements of PM is increasing. This light-scattering method involves irradiating light to the aerosols in the atmosphere to analyze the scattered light and measure mass concentrations. Humidity affects the measurement results. The humidity in an outdoor environment may exist as gas or steam, such as fog. While the impact of humidity on the light-scattering measurement remains unclear, an accurate estimation of ambient PM concentration is a practical challenge. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of humidity on light-scattering measurements by analyzing the variation in the PM concentration measured by the sensor when relative humidity was due to gaseous and steam vapor. The gaseous humidity did not cause errors in the PM measurements via the light-scattering method. In contrast, steam humidity, such as that caused by fog, resulted in errors in the PM measurement. The results help determine the factors to be considered before applying a light-scattering sensor in an outdoor environment. Based on these factors, directions for technological development can be presented regarding the correction of measurement errors induced by vapor in outdoor environments.

    Abstract In this study, an adaptive neural network (NN) control using nonlinear information (NI) gain for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) is proposed to improve control and estimation performance. The proposed method consists of a nonlinear controller, a three-layer NN approximator, and NI gain. The nonlinear controller is designed via a backstepping procedure for position tracking. The commutation scheme is designed to implement the PMSM control without the direct-quadrature (DQ) transform. The three-layer NN approximator is designed to estimate the unknown complex function generated by the recursive backstepping process. The NI gains are designed to enhance the control and estimation performance according to the increased tracking errors owing to the load torque and the desired position variations. All of signals in the closed-loop system guarantee the semiglobal uniformly ultimately boundness (UUB) using the Lyapunov stability theorem and the input-to-state stability (ISS) property. The performance of the proposed method was validated by experiments performed using a PMSM testbed.

    Abstract To enable machines to learn how humans interact with the physical world in our daily activities, it is crucial to provide rich data that encompasses the 3D motion of humans as well as the motion of objects in a learnable 3D representation. Ideally, this data should be collected in a natural setup, capturing the authentic dynamic 3D signals during human-object interactions. To address this challenge, we introduce the ParaHome system, designed to capture and parameterize dynamic 3D movements of humans and objects within a common home environment. Our system consists of a multi-view setup with 70 synchronized RGB cameras, as well as wearable motion capture devices equipped with an IMU-based body suit and hand motion capture gloves. By leveraging the ParaHome system, we collect a novel large-scale dataset of human-object interaction. Notably, our dataset offers key advancement over existing datasets in three main aspects: (1) capturing 3D body and dexterous hand manipulation motion alongside 3D object movement within a contextual home environment during natural activities; (2) encompassing human interaction with multiple objects in various episodic scenarios with corresponding descriptions in texts; (3) including articulated objects with multiple parts expressed with parameterized articulations. Building upon our dataset, we introduce new research tasks aimed at building a generative model for learning and synthesizing human-object interactions in a real-world room setting.
