    Abstract Growing demand for activated carbon as an efficient and cost effective means of treating environmental pollution necessitates the economical production of good quality activated carbon. It is possible if it is done using low cost precursor materials and economical production methods. In the present study, two types of activated carbon were produced from Acacia etbaica tree branches while employing phosphoric acid as an activating agent. The first sample underwent carbonization by microwave irradiation (AC-MWI), while the second sample was carbonised in a furnace (AC-CA). Characterization of the formed activated carbon samples was executed by proximate and ultimate analysis adopting standard ASTM procedures. In addition to the elemental analysis, hardness, bulk density, pH, moisture and ash content, surface morphology, BET specific surface area, pore volume, volatile matter, fixed carbon, and iodine number were determined. Characteristics of both activated carbon samples were compared with the characteristics of activated carbon available in the literature and activated carbon available commercially in the market. The comparison revealed that the characteristics of the produced activated carbon samples was well comparable with the activated carbons produced from other species of Acacia tree and activated carbon available commercially. Results showed that the produced activated carbon demonstrated high activation efficiency of 39.8% and 48.7% for AC-CA and AC-MWI, respectively. Furthermore, AC-MWI has a BET specific surface area higher than that of AC-CA (1065 m2/g and 773 m2/g respectively). It was found that the BET specific surface area and pore volume of AC-MWI was higher by 37.7% and 12.7%, respectively, as compared to the values acquired for AC-CA. Additionally, activated carbon could be produced by microwave irradiation in about 48% less time as compared to traditional low temperature heating.     Abstract In the present work, activated carbon was produced from Acacia Tortilis tree bark, utilizing phosphoric acid chemical activation, and microwave irradiation (AC-MWI). Activated carbon was also produce by conventional phosphoric acid chemical activation and low temperature carbonization (AC-CA). Characterization of produced activated carbons performed by proximate analysis adopting ASTM standard procedures. BET-specific surface area, total ash content, bulk density, moisture content, pH, pore volume and iodine number were determined. Comparison of characteristics for both carbon, with the characteristics of AC available in the literature and commercially available in the market was performed. Comparison showed that activated carbon produced from Acacia Tortilis tree bark is well comparable with the reported characteristics of AC in literature and commercially available in market. It was found that AC-MWI has higher BET-specific surface area than AC-CA (836 m2/g and 687 m2/g respectively). Results depict that there is an increase of 22.3% in microspores component and 21.7% BET- specific surface area obtained in AC-MWI as compared to AC-CA. Similarly, the corresponding pore volume obtained (4.97 cm3/g and 4.07 cm3/g respectively) demonstrating better values as compared to the commercial ACs (<1 cm3/g). Additionally, it was found that AC can be produced by microwave irradiation in about 48.5% less time when compared to conventional low temperature heating. The adsorption study of produced ACs was performed using methylene blue as a contaminant. Study showed that MB removal rate initially increased with increase in contact time, which decreased with time until steady state was reached. Adsorption data of MB was fitted to Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. All models show reasonable correlation, however, Freundlich isotherm is best to describe the MB adsorption on AC-MWI based on correlation coefficient R2 value (0.9985).     Abstract Issues related to depletion of conventional fuel resources and environmental concerns have become the driving force to explore an environment friendly, renewable, economical and sustainable alternate energy source. Huge quantities of agriculture biomass are being produced globally which can be transformed to biofuels by utilizing various procedures. However, issues such as environmental damages and competing uses of agriculture biomass need to be investigated factually considering the short as well as long-term acuity considering its effect on the soil and conversion to biofuels. This review provides an insight into the potential of various biomass as an energy source. Presently available conversion techniques to convert biomass to energy in various phases are discussed. The review also addresses the technical, socio-economic and environmental concerns and limitations with the appropriate control measures. Present study revealed that by the year 2020 most of the developed countries including the USA, Canada, China and Poland are switching to, renewable energy including agriculture biomass. Techno-economic analysis performed shows the feasibility of utilizing agriculture biomass as a competitive energy source. The information provided will help stakeholders, energy managers and decision makers working in the sustainable and renewable energy sectors to consider agriculture biomass for energy production at a larger scale.

    Abstract In this article, Fluorescence spectroscopy has been employed for the identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) in water suspension. Emission spectra of PA and E. coli suspensions have been acquired by using excitation wavelengths from 270 to 420 nm with steps of 10 nm to explore their spectral features. It has been found that the emission spectra of tryptophan, tyrosine, NADH and FAD, being the intracellular biomolecules present in both bacteria, can be used as fingerprints for their identification, differentiation and quantification.
