Abstract Objective: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), thrombosis of the dural sinus, cerebral veins, or both, is a rare cerebrovascular disease. Although mortality rates after CVT have declined over time, this condition can result in devastating neurologic outcomes. This article reviews the latest literature regarding CVT epidemiology, details new factors associated with the development of CVT, and describes advances in CVT treatment. It also contains a discussion of future directions in the field, including novel diagnostic imaging modalities, and potential strategies to reduce the risks associated with CVT.
Latest developments: The incidence of CVT may be as high as 2 per 100,000 adults per year. It remains a difficult condition to diagnose given its variable clinical manifestations and the necessity of neuroimaging for confirmation. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed a novel CVT trigger, vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT), as well as an association between COVID-19 infection and CVT. Although VITT is a very rare event, timely diagnosis and treatment of CVT due to VITT likely improves patient outcomes. Direct oral anticoagulants are currently being used to treat CVT and emerging data suggest that these agents are as safe and effective as vitamin K antagonists. The role of endovascular therapy to treat CVT, despite a recent clinical trial, remains unproven.
Essential points: The incidence of CVT has increased, outcomes have improved, and the use of direct oral anticoagulants to treat CVT represents an important advance in the clinical care of these patients. Rates of CVT as a complication of COVID-19 vaccines using adenoviral vectors are very low (<5 per million vaccine doses administered), with the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination far outweighing the risks.

Abstract Objective: Self-objectification is linked to disordered eating (DE) behaviors in women. However, the awareness of objectification by the self and others, not just the objectifying experiences themselves, may be differentially related to DE. The proposed study examines the development and validity of the Conscious Objectification Questionnaire (COQ), which seeks to evaluate awareness of objectification by others and intentional self-objectification.
Method: In Study 1, 24 participants who identify as women (≥18 years) will provide qualitative feedback on COQ items, and survey items will be updated based on participant feedback. In Study 2, separate participants will complete the COQ and questionnaires assessing DE, self-objectification, and mental health correlates. Exploratory factor analyses will be conducted on the COQ, and reliability and convergent and divergent validity will be assessed.
Results: Results will clarify whether the COQ is a reliable and valid instrument that measures the distinct construct of awareness of objectification.
Discussion: If proven psychometrically sound, the COQ may be useful for future research on the link between awareness of objectification and disordered eating.
Public significance: The novel Conscious Objectification Questionnaire (COQ) assesses the degree to which women recognize and act upon being objectified. The COQ will be reviewed by self-objectification experts and pilot participants before being psychometrically evaluated with data from a larger sample. The COQ is expected to differentially relate to disordered eating above and beyond existing self-objectification measures and accurately represent the distinct construct of conscious awareness of societal and self-objectification.

Abstract Little is known about the outcomes of children with second-degree heart block. We aimed to determine whether children with structurally normal hearts and Mobitz 1, 2:1 block or Mobitz 2 are at increased risk for progressing to complete heart block (CHB) or requiring a pacemaker (PM) at long-term follow-up. We searched our institutional electrophysiology database for children with potentially concerning second-degree block on ambulatory rhythm monitoring between 2009 and 2021, defined as frequent episodes of Mobitz 1 or 2:1 block, episodes of Mobitz 1 or 2:1 block with additional evidence of conduction disease (i.e. first-degree heart block, bundle branch block), or episodes of Mobitz 2. Ambulatory rhythm monitor, ECG, and demographic data were reviewed. The primary composite outcome was CHB on follow-up rhythm monitor or PM placement. 20 patients were in the final analysis. Six (30%) patients either developed CHB but do not have a PM (4 = 20%) or have a PM (2 = 10%). Median follow-up was 5.8 years (IQR 4.4-7.0). Patients with CHB or PM were more likely to have second-degree block at maximum sinus rate (67% vs. 0%, p = 0.003), a below normal average heart rate (67% vs. 14%, p = 0.04), and 2:1 block on initial ECG (50% vs. 0%, p = 0.02). In this study of children with potentially concerning second-degree block, 30% of patients progressed to CHB or required a PM. Second-degree block at maximum sinus rate, a low average heart, and 2:1 block on initial ECG were associated with increased risk of disease progression.

Abstract Although the ability to consider others' visual perspectives to interpret ambiguous communication emerges during childhood, people sometimes fail to attend to their partner's perspective. Two studies investigated whether 4- to 6-year-olds show a "closeness-communication bias" in their consideration of a partner's perspective in a communication task. Participants played a game that required them to take their partner's visual perspective in order to interpret an ambiguous instruction. If children, like adults, perform worse when they overestimate the extent to which their perspective is aligned with that of a partner, then they should make more perspective-taking errors when interacting with a socially close partner compared with a more socially distant partner. In Study 1, social closeness was based on belonging to the same social group. In Study 2, social closeness was based on caregiving, a long-standing social relationship with a close kinship bond. Although social group membership did not affect children's consideration of their partner's perspective, children did make more perspective-taking errors when interacting with a close caregiver compared with a novel experimenter. These findings suggest that close personal relationships may be more likely to lead children to overestimate perspective alignment and hinder children's perspective-taking than shared social group membership, and they highlight important questions about the mechanisms underlying the effects of partner characteristics in perspective-taking tasks.

Abstract The purpose of the research is study of four fish species infected with haematophagous parasites in the rivers of the Lower Irtysh basin. Materials and methods. The work was performed in the rivers of the Lower Irtysh basin in 2017–2020. A total of 390 fish of different sex and age were examined including 47 roach (Rutilus rutilus lacustris, (Pallas)), 41 ide (Leuciscus idus, (Linnaeus, 1758)), 47 pike (Esox lucius, (Linnaeus, 1758)) and 255 Siberian sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus marsiglii (Brandt, 1833)). We took blood from the tail artery, and examined its fresh drop under a microscope, and prepared a thin smear, then dried it in the air and fixed in a mixture of 70% ethyl alcohol and diethyl ether (1 : 1) for 30 minutes. The fixed smears were dried in the air at room temperature and stained with azure and eosin at a dilution of 1 : 10 for 40 minutes. We identified species of the found parasites and calculated the prevalence of infection with standard error of the mean. Results and discussion. We found representatives of the Coccidea and Kinetoplastea classes parasitizing in fish blood. Trypanoplasma acipenseris and Haemogregarina acipenseris were recorded in the Siberian sterlet. The pike was infected with T. schulmani and H. esoci. T. schulmani was found in the blood of the ide and roach. Piscicola geometra is the main host of flagellates and sporozoans that parasitize in fish blood in the basin of the Lower Irtysh. The roach and the Siberian sterlet become infected with parasitic flagellates from the age of 1+. All examined fish were infected in age groups 2+ – 4+. Haemogregarina parasitize in the pike aged 4+ and 5+, and in the Siberian sterlet aged 1+ – 4+ and 6+ – 7+.

Abstract Objectives: In patients with single ventricle physiology and a systemic right ventricle, tricuspid valve regurgitation increases the risk of adverse outcomes, and tricuspid valve intervention at the time of staged palliation further increases that risk in the postoperative period. However, long-term outcomes of valve intervention in patients with significant regurgitation during stage 2 palliation have not been established. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long-term outcomes after tricuspid valve intervention during stage 2 palliation in patients with right ventricular dominant circulation in a multicenter study.
Methods: The study was performed using the Single Ventricle Reconstruction Trial and Single Ventricle Reconstruction Follow-up 2 Trial datasets. Survival analysis was performed to describe the association among valve regurgitation, intervention, and long-term survival. Cox proportional hazards modeling was used to estimate the longitudinal association of tricuspid intervention and transplant-free survival.
Results: Patients with tricuspid regurgitation at stage 1 or 2 had worse transplant-free survival (hazard ratio, 1.61; 95% confidence interval, 1.12-2.32; hazard ratio, 2.3; 95% confidence interval 1.39-3.82). Those with regurgitation who underwent concomitant valve intervention at stage 2 were significantly more likely to die or undergo heart transplantation compared with those with regurgitation who did not (hazard ratio, 2.93; confidence interval, 2.16-3.99). Patients with tricuspid regurgitation at the time of the Fontan had favorable outcomes regardless of valve intervention.
Conclusions: The risks associated with tricuspid regurgitation in patients with single ventricle physiology do not appear to be mitigated by valve intervention at the time of stage 2 palliation. Patients who underwent valve intervention for tricuspid regurgitation at stage 2 had significantly worse survival compared with patients with tricuspid regurgitation who did not.

Abstract Compartment syndrome (CS) occurs in several clinical scenarios. Reperfusion injury and tissue swelling are common causes. This can occur after trauma but also is seen post revascularization of extremities. CS is a difficult diagnosis to make in a timely fashion that avoids permanent tissue damage. The treatment for CS is immediate fasciotomy, but fasciotomy is not a complication-free procedure. Previous care pathways usually resulted in fasciotomy being performed in a disproportionate number of normal legs. These false positives and prophylactic releases are costly to the health system because of protracted hospital stays and increased surgery numbers. The desirable tool for surgeons would be one that decreases false positives and negatives while ensuring a diagnosis in a timely fashion with true positives. A new technology that allows continuous pressure monitoring seems to be the best aid to make a diagnosis. We present our experience in decreasing the time to diagnosis in a CS case post revascularization despite the neurological blockade.
