    Abstract Acoustic emission is a non-destructive testing method where sensors monitor an area of a structure to detect and localize passive sources of elastic waves such as expanding cracks. Passive source localization methods based on times of arrival (TOAs) use TOAs estimated from the noisy signals received by the sensors to estimate the source position. In this work, we derive the probability distribution of TOAs assuming they were obtained by the fixed threshold technique-a popular low-complexity TOA estimation technique-and show that, if the sampling rate is high enough, TOAs can be approximated by a random variable distributed according to a mixture of Gaussian distributions, which reduces to a Gaussian in the low noise regime. The optimal source position estimator is derived assuming the parameters of the mixture are known, in which case its MSE matches the Cramér-Rao lower bound, and an algorithm to estimate the mixture parameters from noisy signals is presented. We also show that the fixed threshold technique produces biased time differences of arrival (TDOAs) and propose a modification of this method to remove the bias. The proposed source position estimator is validated in simulation using biased and unbiased TDOAs, performing better than other TOA-based passive source localization methods in most scenarios.

    Abstract Cutaneous pseudolymphomas are a wide group of diseases mimicking cutaneous lymphoma. They comprise several skin conditions with different etiopathogenesis, clinical-pathological features, and prognosis, which may occur in the absence of an identifiable trigger factor or after administration of medications or vaccinations, tattoos, infections, or arthropod bites. They present with different manifestations: from solitary to regionally clustered lesions, up to generalized distribution and, in rare cases, erythroderma. They persist variably, from weeks to years, and resolve spontaneously or after antibiotics, but may recur in some cases. CD30+ T-cell pseudolymphomas are characterized by the presence of large, activated lymphoid cells, generally in response to viral infections, arthropod assault reactions, and drug eruptions. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a ubiquitous Gram-negative bacillus responsible for opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. Infection of intact skin in immunocompetent patients is particularly rare. Here, we report a case of a man presenting an isolated nodule histopathologically mimicking a primary cutaneous CD30+ T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.

    Abstract Objective: Dose shortages delayed access to COVID-19 vaccination. We aim to characterise inequality in two-dose vaccination by sociodemographic group across Brazil.
    Design: This is a cross-sectional study.
    Setting: We used data retrieved from the Brazilian Ministry of Health databases published between 17 January 2021 and 6 September 2021.
    Methods: We assessed geographical inequalities in full vaccination coverage and dose by age, sex, race and socioeconomic status. We developed a Campaign Optimality Index to characterise inequality in vaccination access due to premature vaccination towards younger populations before older and vulnerable populations were fully vaccinated. Generalised linear regression was used to investigate the risk of death and hospitalisation by age group, socioeconomic status and vaccination coverage.
    Results: Vaccination coverage is higher in the wealthier South and Southeast. Men, people of colour and low-income groups were more likely to be only partially vaccinated due to missing or delaying a second dose. Vaccination started prematurely for age groups under 50 years which may have hindered uptake in older age groups. Vaccination coverage was associated with a lower risk of death, especially in older age groups (ORs 9.7 to 29.0, 95% CI 9. 4 to 29.9). Risk of hospitalisation was greater in areas with higher vaccination rates due to higher access to care and reporting.
    Conclusions: Vaccination inequality persists between states, age and demographic groups despite increasing uptake. The association between hospitalisation rates and vaccination is attributed to preferential delivery to areas of greater transmission and access to healthcare.

    Abstract Dengue fever is re-emerging worldwide, however the reasons of this new emergence are not fully understood. Our goal was to report the incidence of dengue in one of the most populous States of Brazil, and to assess the high-risk areas using a spatial and spatio-temporal annual models including geoclimatic, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. An ecological study with both, a spatial and a temporal component was carried out in Sao Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil, between January 1st, 2007 and December 31st, 2019. Crude and Bayesian empirical rates of dengue cases following by Standardized Incidence Ratios (SIR) were calculated considering the municipalities as the analytical units and using the Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation in a Bayesian context. A total of 2,027,142 cases of dengue were reported during the studied period. The spatial model allocated the municipalities in four groups according to the SIR values: (I) SIR<0.8; (II) SIR 0.8<1.2; (III) SIR 1.2<2.0 and SIR>2.0 identified the municipalities with higher risk for dengue outbreaks. "Hot spots" are shown in the thematic maps. Significant correlations between SIR and two climate variables, two demographic variables and one socioeconomical variable were found. No significant correlations were found in the spatio-temporal model. The incidence of dengue exhibited an inconstant and unpredictable variation every year. The highest rates of dengue are concentrated in geographical clusters with lower surface pressure, rainfall and altitude, but also in municipalities with higher degree of urbanization and better socioeconomic conditions. Nevertheless, annual consolidated variations in climatic features do not influence in the epidemic yearly pattern of dengue in southeastern Brazil.

    Abstract Trajectory optimization under uncertainties is a challenging problem for robots in contact with the environment. Such uncertainties are inevitable due to estimation errors, control imperfections, and model mismatches between planning models used for control and the real robot dynamics. This induces control policies that could violate the contact location constraints by making contact at unintended locations, and as a consequence leading to unsafe motion plans. This work addresses the problem of robust kino-dynamic whole-body trajectory optimization using stochastic nonlinear model predictive control (SNMPC) by considering additive uncertainties on the model dynamics subject to contact location chance-constraints as a function of robot's full kinematics. We demonstrate the benefit of using SNMPC over classic nonlinear MPC (NMPC) for whole-body trajectory optimization in terms of contact location constraint satisfaction (safety). We run extensive Monte-Carlo simulations for a quadruped robot performing agile trotting and bounding motions over small stepping stones, where contact location satisfaction becomes critical. Our results show that SNMPC is able to perform all motions safely with 100% success rate, while NMPC failed 48.3% of all motions.

    Abstract Background: Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (cPAN) is a form of medium-sized vessel necrotizing vasculitis. It is a rare, skin-limited variant of polyarteritis nodosa, characterized by dermal and subcutaneous tissue involvement. The most common findings in cPAN include digital gangrene, livedo reticularis, and tender subcutaneous nodules. However, while limited to the skin, cPAN results in significant morbidity and mortality due to the accompanying skin ischemia and necrosis, such that patients are vulnerable to superinfection. Here, we describe a unique presentation of cPAN associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
    Methods: A 78-year-old female presented with digital ischemia and leg ulcers associated with PAH. Skin biopsy showed necrotizing fibrinoid necrosis of the small- and middle-sized vessels of the dermis. A diagnosis of cPAN and PAH was made. The patient was treated with glucocorticoids, vasodilators, and cyclophosphamide.
    Results: She died due to severe sepsis complications.
    Conclusion: To date, this is the first case report describing the association between cPAN and PAH. In this case, PAH is a complication of the cutaneous vasculitides suggesting that vasculopathy could play a role in the pathophysiology of PAH. However, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms still have to be firmly established.

    Abstract Background: Brazil is one of the countries worst affected by the COVID-19 pandemic with over 20 million cases and 557,000 deaths reported by August 2021. Comparison of real-time local COVID-19 data between areas is essential for understanding transmission, measuring the effects of interventions, and predicting the course of the epidemic, but are often challenging due to different population sizes and structures.
    Methods: We describe the development of a new app for the real-time visualisation of COVID-19 data in Brazil at the municipality level. In the CLIC-Brazil app, daily updates of case and death data are downloaded, age standardised and used to estimate the effective reproduction number (
    Findings: After an initial introduction in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states in early March 2020, the epidemic spread to northern states and then to highly populated coastal regions and the Central-West. Municipalities with higher metrics of social development experienced earlier arrival of COVID-19 (decrease of 11·1 days [95% CI:8.9,13.2] in the time to arrival for each 10% increase in the social development index).     Interpretation: This study demonstrates that platforms that monitor, standardise and analyse the epidemiological data at a local level can give useful real-time insights into outbreak dynamics that can be used to better adapt responses to the current and future pandemics.

    Abstract Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) used in the food industry, mainly for the production of dairy products, are able to synthetize exopolysaccharides (EPS). EPS play a central role in the assessment of rheological and sensory characteristics of dairy products since they positively influence texture and organoleptic properties. Besides these, EPS have gained relevant interest for pharmacological and nutraceutical applications due to their biocompatibility, non-toxicity and biodegradability. These bioactive compounds may act as antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering, antimicrobial and prebiotic agents. This review provides an overview of exopolysaccharide-producing LAB, with an insight on the factors affecting EPS production, their dairy industrial applications and health benefits.
