Abstract Background: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has spread across Brazil with varying incidence rates depending on the affected areas. Due to cocirculation of arboviruses and overlapping disease symptoms, CHIKV infection may be underdiagnosed. To understand the lack of CHIKV epidemics in São José do Rio Preto (SJdRP), São Paulo (SP), Brazil, we evaluated viral circulation by investigating anti-CHIKV IgG seroconversion in a prospective study of asymptomatic individuals and detecting anti-CHIKV IgM in individuals suspected of dengue infection, as well as CHIKV presence in Aedes mosquitoes. The opportunity to assess two different groups (symptomatic and asymptomatic) exposed at the same geographic region aimed to broaden the possibility of identifying the viral circulation, which had been previously considered absent.
Methodology/principal findings: Based on a prospective population study model and demographic characteristics (sex and age), we analyzed the anti-CHIKV IgG seroconversion rate in 341 subjects by ELISA over four years. The seroprevalence increased from 0.35% in the first year to 2.3% after 3 years of follow-up. Additionally, we investigated 497 samples from a blood panel collected from dengue-suspected individuals during the 2019 dengue outbreak in SJdRP. In total, 4.4% were positive for anti-CHIKV IgM, and 8.6% were positive for IgG. To exclude alphavirus cross-reactivity, we evaluated the presence of anti-Mayaro virus (MAYV) IgG by ELISA, and the positivity rate was 0.3% in the population study and 0.8% in the blood panel samples. In CHIKV and MAYV plaque reduction neutralization tests (PRNTs), the positivity rate for CHIKV-neutralizing antibodies in these ELISA-positive samples was 46.7%, while no MAYV-neutralizing antibodies were detected. Genomic sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed CHIKV genotype ECSA in São José do Rio Preto, SP. Finally, mosquitoes collected to complement human surveillance revealed CHIKV positivity of 2.76% of A. aegypti and 9.09% of A. albopictus (although it was far less abundant than A. aegypti) by RT-qPCR.
Conclusions/significance: Our data suggest cryptic CHIKV circulation in SJdRP detected by continual active surveillance. These low levels, but increasing, of viral circulation highlight the possibility of CHIKV outbreaks, as there is a large naïve population. Improved knowledge of the epidemiological situation might aid in outbreaks prevention.

Titelübersetzung JOSE VEROCAY - “Pražský patolog”.
Abstract José Verocay (Paysandú 1876 - Eichwald/Dubí, Bohemia 1927) was a Uruguayan anatomopathologist, recognized worldwide as "Prague's pathologist" (Fig. 1). In 1910, he described, for the first time, the morphological structure later called Verocay's bodies, which are used for diagnosing schwannoma. He spent the end of the XIXth century and the beginning of XXth century in Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. During the last years of his life, he tried unsuccessfully to reintegrate himself into the Uruguayan academic community. In 1927, he passed away in Eichwald, Teplitz district, Bohemia. Keywords: Prague's pathologist - Veroca y - Verocay's bodies.

Abstract The emergence of the new Brazilian variant of concern, P.1 lineage (Gamma), raised concern about its impact on the epidemiological profile of COVID-19 cases due to its higher transmissibility rate and immune evasion ability. Using 272 whole-genome sequences combined with epidemiological data, we showed that P.1 introduction in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil, was followed by the displacement of eight circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants and a rapid increase in prevalence two months after its first detection. Our findings support that the P.1 variant is associated with an increase in mortality risk and severity of COVID-19 cases in younger aged groups, which corresponds to the unvaccinated population at the time. Moreover, our data highlight the beneficial effects of vaccination indicated by a pronounced reduction of severe cases and deaths in immunized individuals, reinforcing the need for rapid and massive vaccination.

Abstract This paper starts with an overview of the main principles used for pressure measurements, focusing on their usage in industrial applications' domains. Then, the importance of calibration procedures, namely, static and dynamic calibration of pressure sensors, is analyzed. Regarding calibration, it is important to note that there are several applications where the pressure signals to be measured can have large variations in short periods of time. In industrial applications, particularly in continuous production processes, generally, dynamic pressure measurements are less common; however, they are still required in several cases, such as control loops that are very sensitive to pressure variations, even if the frequencies of those variations are in the range of a few tens of hertz, or even lower. The last part of the paper presents the hardware and software of a flexible and low-cost static and dynamic pressure calibrator that also presents the capability to generate arbitrary waveform pressure signals for calibration and testing purposes. The proposed calibrator also includes the following advantages: remote pressure sensing capabilities that can be used to minimize calibration errors, such as those associated with capillary effects and pressure leakages; portability; and low cost. The paper ends with some experimental results obtained with the proposed calibrator.

Abstract "If we revisit Father António Vieira in the 21st century, we inevitably recognize in him the plurality of approaches [...]: first of all, he was (and is) a thinker of our culture and of the politics of his time, developing themes that demarcate what we call his actuality; and it is certainly not banal to trace a sense of actuality evident in those who lived, thought, preached and wrote over three centuries ago. That is so, but it is not just about that. The legacy of Father Antonio Vieira is also projected, until today, in our language, in the imaginary of his great cultists, in the arts and in his presence in the educational system. The texts we can read here attest well to what is said: the image of Vieira in our historiography, the epistolography and his cult, the prophetic work and the questions to which he invites, the audacity of theological thought, the path of life (a path that made this great figure almost a character of fiction, as the cinema confirmed), the political intervention to which he did not dodge, the unparalleled contribution he gave to sacred oratory"

Abstract "Revisiting Vieira in the 21st Century is a unique and necessary work, consisting of a fundamental set of reflections around ten nuclei, which allow us to visit the master in order to know him better in the light of modern times. And so we find, at each step, the demonstration of the geniality of the speaker and of the man of culture, as well as a constant appeal, which current events cannot forget, regarding the consecration of human dignity. The ten nuclei have a strong analytical and pedagogical sense, allowing us to know and understand a unique source in Portuguese culture: biography, historiography and reception - to integrate ourselves in the life path of the genial author; epistolography and interlocutors - to understand the importance of his intervention; theology and spirituality - to understand the fundamentals of what he tells us; visions of the future: prophetic work - to consider his capacity for anticipation; politics and society - to understand the importance of political commitment, in a time full of uncertainties and threats; sacred oratory and rhetoric: arts, uses and senses - to take care of the creation workshop of the unique artist; literature and art - to continue to scrutinize the enchanting capacity of the craftsman; polemic writings and the vision of the other - to deal with the courage and determination of the intellectual; science and nature - to realize the genuine attraction that he had for knowledge; and pedagogy and didactics - to put ourselves in the position of those who wish to learn the most from Vieira's lesson.
