    Abstract Hydrogeologist EurGeol José Martins Carvalho (BSc, PhD, DSc) gave his last lecture at the School of Engineering of Polytechnic of Porto in January 2014, bringing to a formal close an outstanding career in multidisciplinary hydrogeology teaching and practice (in Europe, Africa, Middle-East, Asia, South America) and in applied research. Nowadays, he is Emeritus Professor of the Polytechnic of Porto and Consultant Hydrogeologist. He has had a career spanning 50 years in military hydrogeology, exploration hydrogeology, environmental hydrogeology, groundwater engineering, hydrogeotechnics, urban water supply, water resources management and geothermics. This brief note aims to present the key milestones in his multifaceted professional career, acting as a geologist, a professor and a researcher of groundwater science. The essence of his long career over the last five decades was to promote the practice, teaching and research of hydrogeology to solve social problems and challenges via an environmental, sustainable and ethical approach. In his own words: “Water is a unique resource: a drop can save a life, in war and peace”.

    Abstract The occupation pattern of Sotalia guianensis in São Francisco do Sul harbor inlet, in Babitonga bay, southern Brazil, was studied between September 1996 and June 1998. A total of 200 h of naturalistic observations and 141.2 h of estuarine dolphin systematic observations were made using binoculars 7 x 50. At each three minutes interval, data about number of individuals and behavior were registered. The population used the harbor inlet intensively, mainly for fishing activities. Ebb tide was responsible for a higher occupation index. Considering the months analyzed, the higher occupation index occurred in May, and in January the lower occurrence was observed. The mean group size was four individuals. Os padrões de ocupação da enseada do porto de cargas de São Francisco do Sul, no interior da Baía da Babitonga, sul do Brasil, pela população de botos cinza Sotalia guianensis foi estudada entre setembro/1996 e junho/1998. Totalizou-se 200 horas de observações naturalísticas e 141.2 horas de observação sistemática na área, utilizando-se binoculares 7 x 50. Foram registrados a cada intervalo de 3 minutos dados sobre o número de indivíduos presentes e comportamento. A população utilizou intensamente a enseada do porto, principalmente para atividades de pesca. A maré enchente foi responsável por maiores taxas de ocupação. Dentre os meses analisados, maio foi o mês com maior média nas taxas de ocupação, e janeiro o mês de menor ocorrência. O tamanho de grupo médio na área foi de quatro indivíduos.

    Abstract Apresenta-se uma descrição da morfologia comparada do sincrânio de Sotalia guianensis (P.J. van Bénéden, 1864), incluindo suas variações ontogenéticas e intra-específicas. As descrições foram baseadas em 51 crânios completos ou parciais depositados na coleção do laboratório de Mamíferos Aquáticos, do Departamento de Ecologia e Zoologia, CCB, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. O sincrânio é bastante homogêneo e manifesta sua assimetria na morfologia dos ossos, passagens nasais e forames. O rostro é proporcionalmente estreito em relação aos outros Delphinidae do mesmo porte. A região temporal é circular em indivíduos jovens, mas se torna oval nos adultos onde se forma uma crista temporal evidente. O forame elíptico do periótico está presente tanto em indivíduos jovens quanto adultos. Os nasais são bipartidos e podem ocorrer ossos suturais entre os frontais. O processo hamular dos pterigóides é bastante inflado e fenestrado. A sínfise mandibular alcança de 19 de 19-23% do comprimento do dentário. Cada pré-maxilar e maxilar possui de 30-35 dentes e cada dentário de 30-38 dentes. Morphological and comparative description of the syncranium of Sotalia guianensis (P.J. van Bénéden, 1864), including ontogenic aspects and intraspecific variations are presented. The descriptions were based on the examination of 51 complete or partial skulls, kept at the Marine Mammals Lab. Collection from the Departamento de Ecologia e Zoologia, CCB, at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. The sincranium is very homogeneous and manifests its asymmetry in the morphology of the bones, nasal passages and foramina. The rostrum is proportionally narrow in relation to other Delphinidae of the same size. The temporal region is circular in young specimens, but it becomes oval in the adults were it forms a well marked temporal crest. The elliptical foramen of the periotic bone is present both in young and adult individuals. The nasals are bipartite and one may find sutural bones between the frontals. The hamular process of the pterygoids is inflated and somewhat fenestrated. The mandibular symphysis covers from 19-23% of the dentary length. Each premaxilla and maxilla has 30-35 teeth and each dentary exhibits 30-38 teeth.

    Abstract Importance: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) resurgences have been noted following the COVID-19 pandemic in many countries. Recent findings suggest that the 2021 and 2022 RSV seasons were more severe than in past seasons, and age distribution may have shifted toward older children in the younger than 5 years age group.
    Objectives: To estimate age-specific changes in RSV hospital-based burden of disease before and after the COVID-19 pandemic and to compare incidence by Medicaid use.
    Design, setting, and participants: This retrospective cohort study included children younger than 5 years diagnosed with RSV and bronchiolitis at 50 US children's hospitals in 10 US geographic regions. The included participants had an encounter in intensive care, inpatient, emergency, or observational units, between June 1, 2015, and March 31, 2023.
    Exposures: Diagnosis of RSV, bronchiolitis, or both at encounter.
    Main outcome and measures: Incidence rate ratio of hospital use within each care unit before vs after the COVID-19 pandemic. It was hypothesized a priori that incidence of hospital use would increase overall in 2021 and 2022 compared with 2015 to 2019 and that the increase would be greater among children 12 months and older.
    Results: Of 924 061 study participants (median [IQR] age, 8 (5-16) months; 535 619 [58.0%] male), 348 077 (37.7%) were diagnosed with RSV. Of these, 187 850 (54.0%) were hospitalized. Incidence rate ratios of hospitalization increased for all ages in 2021 and 2022 compared with 2015 to 2019. Children aged 24 to 59 months were 4.86 (95% CI, 4.75-4.98) times as likely to be hospitalized in 2022 compared with 2015 to 2019, whereas infants aged 0 to 5 months were 1.77 (95% CI, 1.74-1.80) times as likely. Medicaid patients were more likely to be hospitalized than non-Medicaid patients regardless of year.
    Conclusions and relevance: Hospitalizations for RSV and bronchiolitis demonstrated atypical seasonality in 2021 and 2022, with an overall increase in RSV encounters. Postpandemic RSV hospitalization increased for all ages, but especially among older children, whereas bronchiolitis hospitalization was decreased or unchanged compared with earlier seasons. These findings suggest some of the observed increase in RSV hospital use may be due to increased testing.

    Abstract Decision making consists of gathering quality data in order to correctly assess a situation and determine the best course of action. This process is a fundamental part of medicine and is what enables practitioners to accurately diagnose diseases and select appropriate treatment protocols. Despite severe equine asthma (SEA) being a highly prevalent lower respiratory disease amongst equids, clinicians still struggle with the optimization of routine diagnostic procedures. The use of several ancillary diagnostic tests has been reported for disease identification and monitoring, but many are only suitable for research purposes or lack practicality for everyday use. The aim of this paper is to assist the equine veterinarian in the process of decision making associated with managing SEA-affected patients. This review will focus on disease diagnosis and monitoring, while also presenting a flow-chart which includes the basic data that the clinician must obtain in order to accurately identify severely asthmatic horses in their everyday routine practice. It is important to note that European and American board-certified specialists on equine internal medicine can provide assistance in the diagnosis and treatment plan of SEA-affected horses.

    Abstract Antibiotics are a staple in current medicine for the therapy of infectious diseases. However, their extensive use and misuse, combined with the high adaptability of bacteria, has dangerously increased the incidence of multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. This makes the treatment of infections challenging, especially when MDR bacteria form biofilms. The most recent antibiotics entering the market have very similar modes of action to the existing ones, so bacteria rapidly catch up to those as well. As such, it is very important to adopt effective measures to avoid the development of antibiotic resistance by pathogenic bacteria, but also to perform bioprospecting of new molecules from diverse sources to expand the arsenal of drugs that are available to fight these infectious bacteria. Filamentous fungi have a large and vastly unexplored secondary metabolome and are rich in bioactive molecules that can be potential novel antimicrobial drugs. Their production can be challenging, as the associated biosynthetic pathways may not be active under standard culture conditions. New techniques involving metabolic and genetic engineering can help boost antibiotic production. This study aims to review the bioprospection of fungi to produce new drugs to face the growing problem of MDR bacteria and biofilm-associated infections.

    Abstract The urea cycle (UC) is a critically important metabolic process for the disposal of nitrogen (ammonia) produced by amino acids catabolism. The impairment of this liver-specific pathway induced either by primary genetic defects or by secondary causes, namely those associated with hepatic disease or drug administration, may result in serious clinical consequences. Urea cycle disorders (UCD) and certain organic acidurias are the major groups of inherited rare diseases manifested with hyperammonemia (HA) with UC dysregulation. Importantly, several commonly prescribed drugs, including antiepileptics in monotherapy or polytherapy from carbamazepine to valproic acid or specific antineoplastic agents such as asparaginase or 5-fluorouracil may be associated with HA by mechanisms not fully elucidated. HA, disclosing an imbalance between ammoniagenesis and ammonia disposal via the UC, can evolve to encephalopathy which may lead to significant morbidity and central nervous system damage. This review will focus on biochemical mechanisms related with HA emphasizing some poorly understood perspectives behind the disruption of the UC and mitochondrial energy metabolism, namely: i) changes in acetyl-CoA or NAD
