Abstract Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is becoming more common due to lifestyle changes. A long-term high-fat and high-glucose diet induces glycolipid metabolism disorders in the liver, which results in the development of MAFLD. To date, there is no specific clinically useful therapeutics for this disease. Natural products or synthetic compounds were screened and investigated to find effective agents for treating MAFLD. In this study, nootkatone (Nok), a natural sesquiterpene ketone isolated from

Abstract Separation of hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs)/hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) from new-generation refrigerant mixtures has become critical to promote refrigerant recycling use and greatly reduce the emission of HFC refrigerants having high global warming potential. In this study, the utilization of ionic liquids (ILs) as ideal separation agents is explored for the separation performance of mixtures of HFCs (R-32, R-227ea, R-134a, R-152a, and R-125) with HFOs (R-1234yf and R-1234ze(E)). The thermodynamic absorption equilibria of R-134a, R-227ea, R-152a, R-32, and R-125 in [P₆,₆,₆,₁₄][Cl] were measured at temperatures from 293.15 to 343.15 K and pressure up to 1.4 MPa. R-227ea shows the highest solubility, while R-32 shows the lowest solubility, suggesting that the absorption of HFCs in ILs is mainly related to their H-bonding capability. The measured data were successfully correlated by the equilibrium equation combined with the NRTL model, which provides a theoretical tool used for the separation process design. Moreover, the separation capacity was assessed for HFC/HFO blends in imidazolium- and phosphonium-based ILs using ideal selectivity. Considering the ideal selectivity, viscosity, and cost of ILs, [P₆,₆,₆,₁₄][Cl] may be a good candidate for an entrainer for separating some azeotropic or close-boiling-point HFC/HFO mixtures.

Abstract Aim: The aim of the study was to observe the effect of acupuncture on regulating interleukin (IL)-17, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-ɑ, and aquaporins (AQPs) in Sjögren's syndrome (SS) on patients and on non-obese diabetic (NOD) models.
Methods: Levels of anti-AQP 1, 5, 8, and 9 antibodies, IL-17, and TNF-ɑ in the serum of SS patients were compared prior and following 20 acupuncture treatment visits during 8 weeks. While in murine model, five groups were divided to receive interventions for 4 weeks, including control, model, acupuncture, isoflurane, and hydroxychloroquine. The submaxillofacial gland index, histology, immunohistochemistry of AQP1, 5, salivary flow, together with IL-17, and TNF-ɑ expression in peripheral blood were compared among the groups.
Results: Acupuncture reduced IL-17, TNF-ɑ, and immunoglobin A levels, and numeric analog scale of dryness in 14 patients with SS (p < 0.05). The salivary flow was increased, and the water intake decreased in NOD mice receiving acupuncture treatments. IL-17 and TNF-ɑ levels in peripheral serum were down-regulated (p < 0.05) and AQP1, 5 expression in the submandibular glands up-regulated in mice.
Conclusion: The effect on relieving xerostomia with acupuncture may be achieved by up-regulating the expression of AQP1. AQP5, down-regulating levels of IL-17 and TNF-ɑ, and a decrease in inflammation of glands.

Abstract In this study, a fast and efficient method for the separation and analysis of the products in the acid-catalyzed depolymerization of commercially available sodium lignosulfonate has been developed. The depolymerized lignosulfonate products were well separated and characterized by advanced polymer chromatography (APC) employing four ACQUITY APC XT columns in series and a ultraviolet detector. Abstract A laser-triggered vacuum switch (LTVS) is an advanced closing switch with nanosecond delay and jitter. In order to enhance hold-off voltage and extend the service lifetime of an LTVS, we designed a multichannel laser-triggered vacuum switch (MLTVS) utilizing a cone-shaped target electrode placed on the cathode platform. The fabrication and testing of the MLTVS is described in this paper. Experimental results show that the working voltage of the MLTVS with a gap distance of 12 mm is from 30 V to 20 kV. The threshold energy for triggering the switch is 0.4 mJ corresponding to a peak power density of 27.9 MW/cm(2). The triggering lifetime of a spot can reach up to 18,000 shots. In addition, the relationship between triggering lifetime and target materials is analyzed using a field emission scanning electron microscope. A hypothesis of the vacuum gap's triggering mechanism is discussed based on the measured results.

Abstract Depolymerized lignin products are very complex mixtures. Based on a depolymerization solution of commercially available sodium lignosulfonate under mild conditions, a fast and efficient method for the separation and direct characterization of the degree and efficiency of the acid‐catalyzed depolymerization of lignin was developed in this study. Using an ultraviolet detector, the depolymerized lignosulfonate products were well separated and characterized according to the relative molar mass distribution on an advanced polymer chromatographic system with three ethylene‐bridged hybrid columns having small pore sizes (45 Å) in series and tetrahydrofuran as the mobile phase. The developed advanced polymer chromatography method enabled the detection of low‐molecular‐weight lignin degradation products (Mn = 260–1100 Da) with high peak resolutions in less than 7.2 min. Furthermore, preliminary advanced polymer chromatography studies to determine the influence of reaction temperature on the depolymerized products indicated that the depolymerized aromatics fell in several molecular weight ranges with an extremely low dispersity. This new approach can be used for the rapid analysis of lignin depolymerization products.

Abstract Treatment of infantile hemangiomas (IH) with propranolol was first reported in 2008. Regressions of lymphatic malformations combined with pulmonary hypertension was first reported in 2012 after three children received treatment with oral sildenafil, which serves as an antagonist of phosphodiesterase isoform-5 (PDE-5). A marked expression of endothelial cells in the cytoplasm of IH tissues was obtained in our previous study. Therefore, the present study hypothesized that the antagonist of PDE-5, sildenafil, may lead to the regression of hemangiomas. To assess this hypothesis, the proliferation and apoptosis of specimen-derived hemangioma endothelial cells (HemECs) was determined

Abstract The size of roots and their physiological activity during the grain-filling stage affect water and nutrient uptake, and grain yield (GY) in maize (Zea mays L.). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different N levels on postanthesis root senescence in field-grown maize. Three N levels (0, 120, 240 kg N ha–1) was applied to field-grown maize, and the length and weight of roots in the 0- to 40-cm soil layer, nitrogenous compounds in xylem sap, N uptake, dry matter (DM), N accumulation, and GY were analyzed. Shoot N accumulation, but not grain yield, was higher in the N240 treatment than in the N120 treatment. At the silking stage, the root length was longest in the N0 treatment and shortest in the N240 treatment. This was because of the high root/shoot (R/S) and root C/N ratios in N0. Total root length decreased throughout the grain-filling period, mainly because of the reduced length of early developed nodal roots. The root length decreased by 27% in the N0 treatment, to a smaller extent compared to that in N120 (52%) and N240 (51%). The amounts of NO3−–N, NH4+–N and amino acid-N in the xylem sap were highest in the N240 treatment during the entire grain-filling stage, suggesting that a high N supply increased root N-uptake activity. Based on these results, we conclude that high root N-uptake activity, not delayed root senescence, resulted in the large accumulation of N in the shoot under excess N.
