Abstract In the field of synthetic organic chemistry, photochemical and electrochemical approaches are often considered to be competing technologies that induce single electron transfer (SET). Recently, their fusion, i. e., the "photoelectrochemical" approach, has become the focus of attention. In this approach, both solar and electrical energy are used in creative combinations. Historically, the term "photoelectrochemistry" has been used in more inorganic fields, where a photovoltaic effect exhibited by semiconducting materials is employed. Semiconductors have also been studied intensively as photocatalysts; however, they recently have taken a back seat to molecular photocatalysts. In this account, we would like to revisit semiconductor photocatalysts in the field of synthetic organic chemistry to demonstrate that semiconductor "photoelectrochemical" approaches are more than mere alternatives to molecular photochemical and/or electrochemical approaches.

Abstract In this comprehensive paper, three redox-neutral reactions, including [2 + 2] and [4 + 2] cycloadditions and vinylcyclopropane rearrangements, are outlined from the viewpoint of energy conversion. These reactions demonstrate the power of electrosynthesis in the field of synthetic organic chemistry not only from the viewpoint of energy conversion but also from that of redox economy because four-, five-, and six-membered-ring skeletons are constructed without a change in oxidation state of the growing molecules in synthetic routes. The key for all of the reactions is precise control of single-electron transfer (SET) in lithium perchlorate/nitromethane solution, where oxidative SET is facilitated and the thus-generated radical cations are highly stabilized. SET processes can be visualized by plotting the highest occupied molecular orbital and spin density distributions to obtain theoretical pictures for a mechanistic understanding of the reactions; the deduced mechanisms are in good accordance with the reactions’ formal expressions.

Abstract Although single electron transfer (SET) is widely illustrated in formal expressions, it is not rationally supported by computational studies. The present work provided "snapshots" of intramolecular SET in redox tag-guided [2 + 2] cycloadditions, enabled by density functional theory calculations. Significant shifts of spin and positive charge are observed in relation to the carbon-carbon bond formation in the cyclobutyl framework, which is in excellent accordance with a formal expression of the reaction mechanism.

Abstract Small yet brightly emitting fluorophores should find fundamental and practical applications in both academic and industrial settings. In this report, tetrahydrobenzodifuran is used as the core architecture to create novel single-benzene fluorophores. The key for realizing unique and powerful photophysical properties is the combination of the construction of symmetrical push-pull motifs and the restriction of bond rotations to suppress molecular motions that cause non-radiative transitions.
