Abstract The microclimate dynamics under forest crown fundamentally drive plant community responses to global warming. The understory air and soil temperatures are two of the most important components of forest understory microclimate. However, there is rare method to reasonably evaluate the joint effects of forest cover on the understory air and soil temperatures. In this study, we combined a novel three-layer energy balance model and intrinsic biophysical mechanism model to evaluate the biophysical effects of forest on air (ΔTa) and soil temperatures (ΔTs) under forest crown at the global scale. Observations from in situ paired expariments and eddy covariance sites from FLUXNET 2015 were used for validations over the globe. The warming effect caused by low albedo and cooling effect caused by large aerodynamic roughness of forest lands mainly explain the global patterns of ΔTs and ΔTa, which indicate mostly a net cooling in low latitudes, but show opposite directions in large parts of temperate and high latitudes. The ratios of aerodynamic resistance of sensible heat fluxes between upper and lower layers show a positive relationship with ΔTs and ΔTa. The Bowen ratio is negatively related to ΔTs, but is positively related to ΔTa, respectively. Additionally, we examined a new indicator, which is composed of both ΔTs and ΔTa and regulated by the aerodynamic resistance parameters, to evaluate the joint biophysical effects of forest on understory air and soil temperatures. This study fills the gap in modeling the biophysical effects of forest on air and soil temperatures under forest crown over the global scale and improves our understanding of the mechanisms governing the biophysical effects of global forest cover on understory microclimate.

Abstract Energy partitioning between grassland sensible (H) and latent (LE) heat fluxes is critical in determining boundary layer development, the hydrological cycle, weather and climate. In this report, we describe the seasonal and inter-annual variability of the Bowen ratio (β) over semi-arid grassland of the Loess Plateau in the north boundary belt of the summer monsoon of China. β was directly measured by an eddy covariance system over a 6-year period (2007–2012), during which the studied grassland experienced a large range in precipitation, extending from 555.5 mm (2007) to 262.8 mm (2011). The annual Bowen ratio (βa) based on annual energy budgets ranged from 0.90 (2007) to 1.93 (2011) with an annual mean value of 1.32, while the annual midday (10:00–16:00 GMT + 8) β ranged from 2.07 (2007) to 4.19 (2011) with an annual mean value of 3.02. The mean midday β during the dry years (3.66, 2009, 2010 and 2011) was higher than that observed during the wet years (2.39, 2007, 2008 and 2012). The 6-year annual mean values of the bulk surface resistance (Rs), aerodynamic resistance (Ra) and climatological resistance (Ri) varied from 272.27 to 410.10 s m−1, 31.62–34.89 s m−1 and from 64.5 to 87.13 s m−1, respectively, with annual mean values of 337.08, 32.83 and 73.05 s m−1, respectively. The normalized difference vegetable index (NDVI) had a direct influence on β as mediated by Rs, and there was a logarithmic function between ET/ETeq and Rs in the semi-arid grassland. A positive trend between β and the surface resistance (Rs*) normalized by the climatological and aerodynamic resistance was observed at this site. Moreover, the annual effective precipitation frequency was significantly related to the midday β during the growing and non-growing seasons, which indicated that the annual effective precipitation, not the annual precipitation, indirectly affected the annual β through its effect on the shallow soil water content (SWC). The results suggested that inter-annual variations in β was primarily controlled by an annual effective precipitation frequency and seasonal variations in β was directly affected by NDVI as mediated by Rs over the semi-arid grassland in the Chinese Loess Plateau.

Abstract The accurate determination of vineyard evapotranspiration (ET) in the arid desert region of northwest China is important for allocating irrigation water and improving water use efficiency. Taken a vineyard at the Shiyang river basin of the Hexi corridor of Gansu Province as an example, this study evaluated the applicability of the Bowen ratio-energy balance (BREB) method in the arid desert region of northwest China, simulated the variation of vineyard ET by Penman-Monteith (P-M), Shuttle-Wallace (S-W) and Clumping (C) models in this region and compared the estimated ET by the three models with the measured ET by the BREB. Results indicated that the BREB could provide the accurate measurement of vineyard ET from the arid desert region when the Bowen ratio instrument with higher accuracy was correctly installed. Generally, the variation of the estimated ET from P-M, S-W and C models were similar to that of the measured ET by the BREB method. However, the P-M model overestimated the ET significantly; the estimated ET from the S-W and C models, especially from the C model was approximately equal to the measured ET by the BREB. After a rainfall, the performances of the S-W and C models were also good. Therefore, among the three models, the C model was the optimal model in simulating the vineyard ET in the arid region of northwest China. However, after a frost, the C model significantly overestimated the evapotranspiration because the canopy resistance did not fully reflect the dramatic decrease of grapevine transpiration.

Abstract Information about seasonal crop water consumption is useful to develop the appropriate irrigation scheme. Measurements of energy balance components using the Bowen ratio method were made for a complete growing season at a vineyard in the arid region of northwest China. Vine in the experiment was furrow-irrigated using a trellis system. The measured evapotranspiration was compared with estimates using the soil water balance method. It is shown that the Bowen ratio method provided accurate estimates of evapotranspiration from the vineyard and this requires that the Bowen ratio system is appropriately installed. The energy balance components showed typical diurnal pattern with peaks that occurred around the midday, except for the ground heat flux which delayed its peak by 2-3 h. The sensible heat flux was greater than the latent heat flux and followed the net radiation closely. The ratio of the latent heat flux to net radiation was low in the early growing season and increased over time. Under the limited irrigation experienced in the vineyard, the latent heat flux was controlled by available soil moisture and the total evapotranspiration in the growing season was 253 mm. The seasonal progression of the crop coefficient is similar to that reported in the literature, with the maximum occurring during the month of September. The crop coefficient can be estimated as a non-linear function of day of year (DOY) and used to estimate evapotranspiration from vineyards in the region. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract Construction workers in South Africa are an at-risk group for HIV/AIDS. Substance misuse, other than alcohol, is associated with poor decision-making, risky lifestyle behaviour, and non-use of condoms. Substance misuse is also associated with harmful and hazardous alcohol consumption and depression. The Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (DUDIT) is a widely used screening tool to detect drug abuse. The present study examines both the psychometric properties of the DUDIT and the prevalence of drug abuse among construction workers. A field study involving 496 male workers at 18 construction sites of seven construction companies in the Western Cape province of South Africa, was undertaken. Descriptive statistics, reliability, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to determine the prevalence of substance use, and the dimensionality, reliability and construct validity of the DUDIT. Approximately 10% of participants reported some form of substance use. Four hundred and sixty-seven employees (94.2%) were determined not to have drug-related problems (DUDIT score < 6). Of the at-risk employees (score >5), 5.0% (
