    Abstract Etiological diagnosis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy represents a daily challenge. Endosonography (transesophageal and transbronchial ultrasound-guided needle aspiration) is the recommended technique in the first diagnostic work-up and in the mediastinal staging of lung cancer. Despite a good sensitivity, limited amount of collected tissue may hamper molecular assessment in advanced lung cancer and in the diagnosis of lymphoproliferative disorders, fibrotic sarcoidosis, and mycobacterial lymphadenitis. Cryobiopsy, a bronchoscopic technique based on cooling, crystallization, and subsequent collection of tissue, has been successfully employed in the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases. Cryoprobes provide larger amount of tissue than conventional bronchoscopic sampling tools and might potentially prevent the need for invasive surgical procedures. New applications of the technique (e.g., bronchoscopic diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions and mediastinal lymph nodes) have been recently described in few reports. In a recent issue of the Journal, Genova et al. described five patients who underwent endobronchial ultrasound transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) followed by ultrasound-guided transbronchial cryobiopsy of mediastinal lymphadenopathy for a suspected malignancy. The authors discussed about the potential added value of mediastinal cryobiopsy on a correct histopathological and molecular assessment in patients with malignancies. EBUS-cryobiopsy could be a promising technique in the diagnostic pathway of mediastinal lymphadenitis. However, cryobiopsy is now available only in few selected centres. The learning curve of the technique adapted to mediastinal ultrasound-guided sampling, the optimal sampling strategy, its true diagnostic accuracy in patients with malignant and benign diseases, as well as its safety, are still largely unclear. Mediastinal cryobiopsy could be complementary rather than alternative to conventional endosonography. Rapid on-site evaluation of EBUS-TBNA could guide subsequent sampling with cryoprobes in case of poor collection of biological material or in case of suspected lymphoproliferative disorders. Further studies should investigate its diagnostic yield, in comparison or in combination with conventional endosonography, in large cohorts of patients with malignant or benign mediastinal lymphadenopthies.

    Abstract Although it has been established that population density can contribute to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, there is no evidence to suggest that economic activities, which imply a significant change in mobility, played a causal role in the unfolding of the pandemic. In this paper, we exploit the particular situation of Sardinia (Italy) in 2020 to examine how changes in mobility due to tourism inflows (a proxy of economic activities) influenced the development of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we identify a strong causal relationship between tourism flows and the emergence of COVID-19 cases in Sardinia. We estimate the elasticity of COVID-19 cases in relation to the share of tourists to be 4.1%, which increases to 5.1% when excluding local residents. Our analysis suggests that, in the absence of tools preventing the spread of infection, changes in population density due to economic activities trigger the pandemic spreading in previously unaffected locations. This work contributes to the debate on the complex relationship between COVID-19 and the characteristics of locations by providing helpful evidence for risk-prevention policies.

    Abstract General anesthesia for ovariectomy in dogs is based on a balanced anesthesia protocol such as using analgesics along with an inhalant agent. While opioids such as fentanyl and methadone are commonly used for their analgesic potency, other drugs can also have analgesic effects. Maropitant, an antiemetic for dogs and cats, has also been shown to exert analgesic effects, especially on visceral pain. The aim of this study was to compare the cardiorespiratory effects and analgesic properties of maropitant and methadone combined with desflurane in dogs undergoing ovariectomy.     Abstract This study investigates the effect of surface modifications of the titanium substrate on the growth of electrochemically deposited copper. These materials are intended to serve as cathodes in the electroreduction of nitrates in aqueous solutions. Surface modifications included the use of hydrogen fluoride for titanium etching and anodization to promote the growth of a structured titania nanotube array. The effect of an intermediate calcination step for the nanotubes before deposition was assessed along with a comparison to an untreated substrate electrode. The materials were comprehensively characterized by SEM, XRD, contact angle, potentiodynamic tests, EIS, and cyclic voltammetry. Their electrocatalytic ability was tested in the reduction of aqueous solutions containing nitrates. The results reveal that surface finishing impacted the shape and size of the Cu microparticles, as well as the nucleation mechanism enabling a crystal-facet-controllable synthesis. All the materials exhibited microsized copper particles with a spherical shape with some clusters. On the etched titanium surface, a high number of heterogeneous submicroscopic particles were also present. The thermally treated anodized substrate promoted the development of a combination of sparse microparticles corresponding to defect sites in amorphous titanium and the presence of a diffuse coating of octahedral nanosized particles whose growth was promoted by the tetragonal structure of anatase crystals. Electrochemical tests display reduced charge transfer resistance upon copper deposition on the modified substrates, which is indicative of the enhanced conductivity of the coated materials. Additionally, cyclic voltammetry and electrolysis experiments reveal the electrodes' potential for nitrate reduction, showing a better response for the etched titanium substrate (30% nitrate removal, after 2 h at 25 mA cm
