Abstract We examine the emerging forest bioeconomy as an integrated, multi-product industrial ecosystem, where the traditional pulp mills allocate the use of side streams to independent biochemical companies manufacturing bioproducts in the vicinity of the pulp mills. Biochemical companies benefit from the proximity by receiving wood-based side streams at lower costs, and at the same time, pulp mills benefit from having a new source of revenue from selling side streams. We focus on the economic interaction between the pulp mill and the biochemical company, and we study the impacts on the use of wood and profits under perfect and imperfect competition. We demonstrate that the new industrial ecosystem uses more wood than traditional pulp mills, but depending on the side stream, it may promote cascading use of wood-based side streams.

Abstract A 66 year old male with history of inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) placement was incidentally diagnosed with a 5 cm inguinal mass abutting the IPP reservoir after prostate MRI performed for an elevated PSA. This was surgically resected en bloc with his ipsilateral testicle and IPP reservoir, with final pathology demonstrating a high-grade round cell NUTM::CIC fusion sarcoma. Management is primarily surgical, though patients with high-risk features may require adjuvant chemoradiation.

Abstract This is a description of a dedifferentiated liposarcoma seen in a 27-year-old female patient. The tumor originated from the vallecula and contains distinctive bodies. These bodies, which are formed by the aggregation of tumor cells, contain collagen in several regions and are oval or elongated in shape. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells showed staining for MDM2, p16, Vimentin, beta catenin, smooth muscle actin, bcl-2 and p53. Ki-67 ratio was 17% in hypercellular areas of the tumor. Molecular genetic studies have found copy number increase for CDK4 and MDM2 genes. Final histopathological diagnosis was dedifferentiated liposarcoma with unique bodies. Although meningothelial-like whorls is defined in dedifferentiated liposarcoma, this body has not been defined until now. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a DDL containing a cellular spindle cell component seen as rare sheet-like areas and distinctive ball-like, or elongated, serpiginous formations in the middle of paucicellular, collagenous areas.

Title translation Succinate dehydrogenase-deficient tumors--a novel mechanism of tumor formation.
Abstract Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) is a heterotetrameric enzyme complex participating in the Krebs cycle and electron transfer of oxidative phosphorylation. These tumors, discovered during the past 15 years, often occur in young patients and include 15% of paragangliomas, 7% of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), and <1% of renal cell carcinomas and pituitary adenomas. SDH-deficient tumors have lost SDH complex activity via bi-allelic genomic losses or epigenetic silencing. This deficiency is oncogenic, activating pseudohypoxia signaling. SDH deficiency has to be suspected in the above-cited tumor types presenting at a young age. Immunohistochemical testing of tumor tissue for SDHB loss is diagnostic.
