Abstract: ... a mass balance of the Baishui River Glacier No. 1 (BRG1) in Yulong Snow Mountain, southeastern Qinghai–Tibet ...

Abstract Glacier mass balance is a key idea in understanding the relationship between glaciers and climate. In this study, Landsat images, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, and Advance Land Operation Satellite digital elevation models, and ground observation records for 2000–2010 and 2019–2020 were used to analyze a mass balance of the Baishui River Glacier No. 1 (BRG1) in Yulong Snow Mountain, southeastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Both glaciological and geodetic methods were used to understand the spatial pattern of the mass balance. A mass balance contour line map of the glacier was created for the first time. From 2000 to 2010, the mean annual mass balance of the BRG1 was calculated to be -0.99 m w.e., -1.01 m w.e., and −1.18 m w.e. using the contour line, profile curve, and geodetic methods, respectively. In addition, the analysis revealed that strong melting of the glacier occurred from July 27 to 15 September 2019, with an averaged glacier mass balance of -1.75 m w.e. and a mean daily melting rate of 35 mm w.e. The annual mass balance was assessed to be −1.31 m w.e. during 2019/20 using the contour line method. In addition, the spatial patterns on the mass balance contour maps for 2000–2010 and the summer of 2019, and the climate change in this region were analyzed. The results indicate that the increased air temperature was the main cause of the accelerated glacial melting.

Abstract In order to evaluate the chemical composition of aerosol on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, aerosol samples were acquired at Mt. Yulong during January to February, 2010. Eighteen elements (Al, Si, P, S, Ca, Ti, K, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, As, Br, Ba, Pb, Sb and Cu) and major water-soluble ions (SO₄ ²⁻, NO₃ ⁻, Cl⁻, Na⁺, NH₄ ⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, and Ca²⁺) were detected. The results show that Ca, Fe, Al, Si, S, K and Ti are major elements which mainly originate from crustal material, while SO₄ ²⁻ and Ca²⁺ are the dominant anion and cation in the samples, respectively. Results of ion analysis indicate that our samples are alkaline and that the main compounds present are CaCO₃, (NH₄)₂SO₄, and CaSO₄. The enrichment factors (EFs) determined for As, Br, Ca, Cu, S, Pb and Zn are greater than 10; in particular, EFs for As and Br are above 100. However, the high EF for As could be caused by crustal sources because the high level of As enrichment can be found commonly on the Tibetan Plateau. Analyses including Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observations, EF determinations, backward trajectories and correlation coefficients reveal that Al, Fe, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, K and Mg²⁺ mainly originate from crustal sources; Pb, Br, Cu, Ni, Zn and Sb come mainly from traffic-related emissions; and biomass burning influences Cl⁻, Br, S and P.

Abstract The resolution of a lensless on-chip microscopy system is constrained by the pixel size of image sensors. This Letter introduces a super-resolution on-chip microscopy system based on a compact array light source illumination and sub-pixel shift search. The system utilizes a closely spaced array light source composed by four RGB LED modules, sequentially illuminating the sample. A sub-pixel shift search algorithm is proposed, which determines the sub-pixel shift by comparing the frequency of captured low-resolution holograms. Leveraging this sub-pixel shift, a super-resolution reconstruction algorithm is introduced, building upon a multi-wavelength phase retrieval method, enabling the rapid super-resolution reconstruction of holograms with the region-of-interest. The system and algorithms presented herein obviate the need for a displacement control platform and calibration of the illumination angles of the light source, facilitating a super-resolution phase reconstruction under partially coherent illumination.

Abstract The aims of this study were to explore the protective effect of Xiaochaihu decoction in mice with sepsis induced by intraperitoneal injection; to explore its anti-inflammatory effect on the TLR4-MyD88-NF-κB signalling pathway; and to explore the main material basis of the anti-inflammatory effect of Xiaochaihu decoction, with the aim of supplementing and expanding the associated research and providing a scientific foundation for the clinical use of the decoction. The effects of Xiaochaihu decoction on septic mice were analysed by measurements of white blood cells (WBC) and Platelets (PLT); Nitric Oxide (NO) level in serum; IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α levels in serum; RT-PCR; Haematoxylin-Eosin (HE) immunohistochemistry; western blotting (WB). The results showed the excellent in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of Xiaochaihu decoction in LPS-induced septic mice, through down regulation of the gene and protein expression of TLR4, MYD88, TRAF6, IKK, IKBα and p65 and the subsequent reduction in the release of inflammatory mediators IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α and NO. Moreover, significant anti-septic effect was observed from high and medium doses of Xiaochaihu decoction, but not from the low dose.

Abstract Gene selection is a process of selecting discriminative genes from microarray data that helps to diagnose and classify cancer samples effectively. Swarm intelligence evolution-based gene selection algorithms can never circumvent the problem that the population is prone to local optima in the process of gene selection. To tackle this challenge, previous research has focused primarily on two aspects: mitigating premature convergence to local optima and escaping from local optima. In contrast to these strategies, this paper introduces a novel perspective by adopting reverse thinking, where the issue of local optima is seen as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Building on this foundation, we propose MOMOGS-PCE, a novel gene selection approach that effectively exploits the advantageous characteristics of populations trapped in local optima to uncover global optimal solutions. Specifically, MOMOGS-PCE employs a novel population initialization strategy, which involves the initialization of multiple populations that explore diverse orientations to foster distinct population characteristics. The subsequent step involved the utilization of an enhanced NSGA-II algorithm to amplify the advantageous characteristics exhibited by the population. Finally, a novel exchange strategy is proposed to facilitate the transfer of characteristics between populations that have reached near maturity in evolution, thereby promoting further population evolution and enhancing the search for more optimal gene subsets. The experimental results demonstrated that MOMOGS-PCE exhibited significant advantages in comprehensive indicators compared with six competitive multi-objective gene selection algorithms. It is confirmed that the "reverse-thinking" approach not only avoids local optima but also leverages it to uncover superior gene subsets for cancer diagnosis.

Abstract Background: It remains to be determined whether opioid-free anaesthesia (OFA) is consistently effective for different types of surgery.
Objectives: The current study hypothesised that OFA could effectively inhibit intraoperative nociceptive responses, reduce side effects associated with opioid use, and improve the quality of recovery (QoR) in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).
Design: A multicentre randomised controlled study.
Setting: Seven hospitals participated in this multicentre trial from May 2021 to December 2021.
Patients: Of the 978 screened patients who were scheduled for elective ESS, 800 patients underwent randomisation, and 773 patients were included in the analysis; 388 patients in the OFA group and 385 patients in the opioid anaesthesia group.
Interventions: The OFA group received balanced anaesthesia with dexmedetomidine, lidocaine, propofol and sevoflurane; the opioid anaesthesia group received opioid-based balanced anaesthesia using sufentanil, remifentanil, propofol and sevoflurane.
Outcome measures: The primary outcome was 24-h postoperative QoR as evaluated by the Quality of Recovery-40 questionnaire. The key secondary outcomes were episodes of postoperative pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV).
Results: A significant difference ( P  = 0.0014) in the total score of 24-h postoperative Quality of Recovery-40 was found between the OFA group, median [interquartile range], 191 [185 to 196] and the opioid anaesthesia group (194 [187 to 197]). There were significant differences between the opioid anaesthesia group and the OFA group in the numerical rating scale score for pain after surgery at 30 min ( P   =  0.0017), 1 h ( P   =  0.0052), 2 h ( P   =  0.0079) and 24 h ( P  = 0.0303). The difference in the area under the curve of pain scale scores between the OFA group (24.2 [3.0 to 47.5]) and the opioid anaesthesia group (11.5 [1.0 to 39.0]) was significant ( P  = 0.0042). PONV occurred in 58 of 385 patients (15.1%) in the opioid anaesthesia group compared with 27 of 388 patients (7.0%) in the OFA group, suggesting the incidence of PONV in the OFA group was significantly lower than in the opioid anaesthesia group ( P   =  0.0021).
Conclusion: OFA can provide good intraoperative analgesia and postoperative recovery quality as effectively as conventional opioid anaesthesia in patients undergoing ESS. OFA can be an alternative option in the pain management of ESS.
Trial registration: The study was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2100046158; registry URL: http://www.chictr.org.cn/enIndex.aspx .).

Abstract A selective laser-melted Al-Mn-Sc alloy with 99.9% relative density has been obtained in this work through systematic process optimization. The as-fabricated specimen had the lowest hardness and strength, but the highest ductility. The aging response has shown that 300 °C/5 h is the peak aged condition, and it had the highest hardness, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation at fracture. Such a high strength was attributed to the uniformly distributed nano-sized secondary Al

Abstract Phenological traits, such as leaf and flowering dates, are proven to be phylogenetically conserved. The relationship between phylogenetic conservation, plant phenology, and climatic factors remains unknown. Here, we assessed phenological features among flowering plants as evidence for phylogenetic conservatism, the tendency for closely related species to share similar ecological and biological attributes. We use spring phenological traits data from 1968-2018 of 65 trees and 49 shrubs in Xi'an (temperate climate) and Guiyang (subtropical climate) to understand plant phenological traits' relationship with phylogeny. Molecular datasets are employed in evolutionary models to test the phylogenetic conservatism in spring phenological characteristics in response to climate-sensitive phenological features. Significant phylogenetic conservation was found in the Xi'an plant's phenological traits, while there was a non-significant conservation in the Guiyang plant species. Phylogenetic generalized least squares (PGLS) models correlate with phenological features significantly in Xi'an while non-significantly in Guiyang. Based on the findings of molecular dating, it was suggested that the Guiyang species split off from their relatives around 46.0 mya during the middle Eocene of the Tertiary Cenozoic Era, while Xi'an species showed a long evolutionary history and diverged from their relatives around 95 mya during the late Cretaceous Mesozoic Era. First leaf dates (FLD) indicative of spring phenology, show that Xi'an adjourned the case later than Guiyang. Unlike FLD, first flower dates (FFD) yield different results as Guiyang flowers appear later than Xi'an's. Our research revealed that various factors, including phylogeny, growth form, and functional features, influenced the diversity of flowering phenology within species in conjunction with local climate circumstances. These results are conducive to understanding evolutionary conservation mechanisms in plant phenology concerning evolutionary processes in different geographical and climate zones.
