| Abstract | We report on a measurement of sigma(pp-->W+X)B(W-->taunu) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity (lum) of 18 pb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector during 1994-1995. We find that sigma(pp-->W+X)B(W-->taunu)=2.22+/-0.09 (stat)+/-0. 10 (syst)+/-0.10 (lum) nb. Lepton universality predicts that the ratio of the tau and electron electroweak charged current couplings to the W boson, gWtau/gWe, be unity. We find gWtau/gWe=0.980+/-0.031, in agreement with lepton universality. |

| Abstract | Microplastic pollution (plastic particles < 5 mm) has potentially harmful impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Understanding the factors that impact microplastic loading and distribution within aquatic ecosystems is crucial for assessing potential threats from microplastics. Here we examine the extent of microplastic pollution in the surface waters and sediments of four small inland lakes in Minnesota, USA that represent a range of human impacts as well as a variety of watershed and lake characteristics. Surface water particulates and benthic sediments were collected in the summers of 2019 and 2020 to examine the loading of microplastics into these lakes and their distribution throughout the ecosystems. Lower size cut offs were set at 330 μm for surface water particulate samples and 250 μm for sediment samples. Watershed to surface area ratio (WS:SA) and urban development were the most influential factors on microplastic loading. | Abstract | Serum albumin is a circulatory transport protein that has a highly conserved sequence and structure across mammalian organisms. Its ligand-binding properties are of importance as albumin regulates the pharmacokinetics of many drugs. Due to the high degree of structural conservation between mammalian albumins, nonhuman albumins such as bovine serum albumin or animal models are often used to understand human albumin-drug interactions. Ketoprofen is a popular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is transported by albumin. Here, it is revealed that ketoprofen exhibits different binding-site preferences when interacting with human serum albumin compared with other mammalian albumins, despite the conservation of binding sites across species. The reasons for the observed differences were explored, including identifying ketoprofen binding determinants at specific sites and the influence of fatty acids and other ligands on drug binding. The presented results reveal that the drug-binding properties of albumins cannot easily be predicted based only on a complex of albumin from another organism and the conservation of drug sites between species. This work shows that understanding organism-dependent differences is essential for assessing the suitability of particular albumins for structural or biochemical studies. |
