    Abstract Objectives: Major depression (MD) may be associated with inflammation and immunity. PD-1 (programmed death-1), PD-L1 (programmed death-ligand 1) and PD-L2 (programmed death-ligand 2) are among the inhibitory immune mediators on the PD-1 pathway. However, previous data regarding the association between MD and PD-1 pathway were still scarce; therefore, we investigated the association of PD-1 pathway with MD.
    Methods: During a period of 2 years, patients with MD and healthy controls were recruited from a medical centre in this study. The diagnosis of MD was established according to the DSM-5 criteria. The severity of MD was assessed with 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. PD-1, PD-L1 and PD-L2 were detected in peripheral blood from MD patients after 4 weeks of treatment with antidepressant drugs.
    Results: A total of 54 patients with MD and 38 healthy controls were recruited. According to the analyses, there is a significantly higher PD-L2 level in MD than in healthy controls and lower PD-1 level after age and BMI adjustment. Besides, moderately positive correlation between HAM-D scores and PD-L2 level was found.
    Conclusions: It was found that PD-1 pathway might play an important role in MD. We need a large sample to prove these results in the future.

    Abstract Carvacrol is a monoterpenoid phenol that has excellent antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activities. It can also improve wound healing. However, few studies have explored its antitumor effect on osteosarcoma. In this report, we tried to determine the potential efficacy of carvacrol against osteosarcoma cell lines. Our data revealed that carvacrol exposure inhibited the proliferation of osteosarcoma HOS and U-2 OS cells. In addition, carvacrol exposure enhanced the levels of cleaved PARP and caspase 3 and increased annexin V-positive cells, indicating that carvacrol exposure triggers apoptosis in osteosarcoma cell lines. Furthermore, the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were enhanced after carvacrol exposure and cotreatment with NAC, the ROS scavenger, decreased the levels of cleaved PARP and caspase 3, suggesting the involvement of ROS in carvacrol-induced apoptosis. Importantly, we found that carvacrol exposure triggered several protein expressions related to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, including GRP78/Bip, IRE1a, PERK, and CHOP, in HOS and U-2 OS cells, indicating that carvacrol exposure could result in ER stress in these cell lines. Cotreatment with the ER stress inhibitor 4-PBA increased the levels of cleaved PARP and caspase 3 and further suppressed cellular proliferation in carvacrol-exposed osteosarcoma cell lines. Overall, the results indicate that induced ER stress can protect cells from apoptosis, but increased ROS contributes to apoptosis in carvacrol-treated cells. In this report, we first demonstrate the role of ER stress in carvacrol-induced apoptosis and suggest that ER stress could be targeted to enhance the antitumor activity of carvacrol in osteosarcoma cell lines.

    Abstract A novel delay-dependent stability criterion for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with multiplicative noise is addressed in this paper subject to passivity performance. The general case of interval time-varying delay is considered for the practical control issue. For the criterion, an integral Lyapunov-Krasovskii function is proposed to derive some sufficient relaxed conditions and to avoid the derivative of the membership function. Moreover, a free-matrix inequality is adopted to deal with the delay terms such that the available derivative of time-varying delay is bigger than one. In order to employ a convex optimization algorithm to find the control gain, a projection lemma is applied to acquire the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) form of the sufficient conditions. With the obtained gains, a fuzzy controller is designed by the concept of Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) such that the delayed T-S fuzzy systems with multiplicative noise are asymptotically stable and passive in the mean square. Finally, a stabilization problem of the ship’s autopilot dynamic system and some comparisons are discussed during the simulation results.

    Abstract Carvacrol is a monoterpenoid phenol that has excellent antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activities. It can also improve wound healing. However, few studies have explored its antitumor effect on osteosarcoma. In this report, we tried to determine the potential efficacy of carvacrol against osteosarcoma cell lines. Our data revealed that carvacrol exposure inhibited the proliferation of osteosarcoma HOS and U-2 OS cells. In addition, carvacrol exposure enhanced the levels of cleaved PARP and caspase 3 and increased annexin V-positive cells, indicating that carvacrol exposure triggers apoptosis in osteosarcoma cell lines.     Abstract Objective: To compare the effects of botulinum toxin and steroid septal injections in treating allergic rhinitis (AR) by evaluating improvements in the rhinitis control assessment test (RCAT), visual analog scale (VAS), nasal obstruction symptom evaluation (NOSE) scores, and active anterior rhinomanometry (RMM) measurements.
    Methods: This prospective, single-blinded cohort study was conducted at the Department of Otolaryngology, Taipei City Hospital between January 2017 and December 2018. Ninety-five patients were randomized to receive botulinum toxin, dexamethasone, or normal saline (group A, group B, and placebo, respectively). The main outcome measures were pretreatment subjective nasal symptoms (RCAT, VAS, and NOSE) and active anterior RMM measurements. All measurements were repeated during posttreatment 1, 2, and 3 months.
    Results: No significant difference was observed in pretreatment questionnaire scores and RMM values between the study and placebo groups. The mean posttreatment RCAT, VAS, and NOSE scores after 1 and 2 months significantly improved in the treatment groups compared to placebo. The VAS and NOSE at posttreatment 2 months and RCAT, VAS, and NOSE at posttreatment 3 months were significantly different comparing group A to group B. All RMM parameters showed better values in group A than in group B at 1, 2, and 3 months posttreatment, with significant differences in four parameters in posttreatment 3 months.
    Conclusions: Botulinum toxin septal injection is a safe treatment option for AR and improves subjective nasal symptoms for 3 months. Botulinum toxin A injection tended to be more effective than steroid septal injection in terms of duration and degree.Level of Evidence: 2b, individual cohort study.

    Abstract Background: Taiwanese patients frequently experience severe hepatotoxicity associated with high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) treatment, which interferes with subsequent treatment. Drug-drug interactions occur when MTX is used in combination with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In East Asia, real-world analyses on the effects of co-medication and other potential risk factors on the clinical course of HD-MTX-mediated acute hepatotoxicity in patients with osteogenic sarcoma (OGS) are limited.
    Methods: This cohort study included patients with newly diagnosed OGS who were treated with HD-MTX between 2009 and 2017 at Taipei Veterans General Hospital. We collected data on the clinical course of HD-MTX-mediated acute hepatotoxicity, co-medications, and other potential risk factors, and analyzed the effects of these factors on the clinical course of HD-MTX-mediated acute hepatotoxicity.
    Results: Almost all patients with OGS treated with HD-MTX developed acute hepatotoxicity with elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. Most patients with Grade 3-4 ALT elevation failed to recover to Grade 2 within 7 days. Women and children are high-risk subgroups for HD-MTX-mediated elevation of ALT levels. Age is a factor that contributes to the pharmacokinetic differences of HD-MTX. However, the concurrent use of PPIs, TMP-SMX, or NSAIDs did not affect the elimination of MTX when administered with adequate supportive therapy.
    Conclusions: Co-administration of PPIs, TMP-SMX, or NSAIDs may have limited effects on acute hepatotoxicity in well-monitored and adequately pre-medicated patients with OGS undergoing chemotherapy with HD-MTX. Clinicians should pay particular attention to ALT levels when prescribing HD-MTX to children and women.

    Abstract Introduction: The aim of this study was to better understand the onset time and factors associated with cochlear obliteration following translabyrinthine approach (TLA) surgery for large cerebellopontine angle tumors.
    Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 117 patients with large cerebellopontine angle tumor (tumor diameter >2 cm) treated by TLA surgery from June 2011 to March 2019 in a single tertiary referral center. The Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank test was used to estimate cochlear patency survival and the association between survival and covariates, and the Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to identify possible factors associated with cochlear obliteration.
    Results: Of the 117 patients included in our analysis, the median follow-up was 24.8 months. There were 30 (25.6%) patients in the cochlear obliteration group, and 87 (74.4%) in the patent cochlear group. Various degrees of cochlear obliteration was found in 25.6% patients in final MRI scan, comprised of 50% grade I, 30% grade II, and 20% grade III. Cochlear patency survival curves showed 94.0% at 3 months, 73.0% at 18 months, which plateaued after 20 months with a survival rate of 71.6%. In the multivariate Cox proportional hazards model, patients presented with postoperative hyperintense T1W cochlear signal had poorer cochlear patency survival compared to isointense T1W (HR = 4.15). Similarly, postoperative deteriorated facial function (HR = 4.52) and full IAC involvement of tumor (HR = 2.33) demonstrated a higher risks of cochlear obliteration after TLA surgery.
    Conclusion: The 2-year estimated cochlear patency rate was 71.6% in patients that received TLA. Cochlear obliteration can develop as early as 3 months post-surgery, with no new obliteration 20 months after the surgery and half of these patients got severe obliteration. Three factors associated with cochlear obliteration were identified including full IAC involvement of tumor, postoperative facial function deterioration, and postoperative hyperintense T1W cochlear signal.

    Abstract Unsaturated poly (butylene adipate-co-butylene itaconate) (PBABI) copolyesters were synthesized through melt polymerization composed of 1,4-butanediol (BDO), adipic acid (AA), itaconic acid (IA) and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) as a cross-linking modifier. The melting point, crystallization and glass transition temperature of the PBABI copolyesters were detected around 29.8-49 °C, 7.2-29 °C and -51.1 and -58.1 °C, respectively. Young's modulus can be modified via partial cross-linking by BTCA in the presence of IA, ranging between 32.19-168.45 MPa. Non-isothermal crystallization kinetics were carried out to explore the crystallization behavior, revealing the highest crystallization rate was placed in the BA/BI = 90/10 at a given molecular weight. Furthermore, the thermal, mechanical properties, and crystallization rate of PBABI copolyesters can be tuned through the adjustment of BTCA and IA concentrations.
