Abstract Most auditory evoked potential (AEP) studies in echolocating toothed whales measure neural responses to outgoing clicks and returning echoes using short-latency auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) arising a few ms after acoustic stimuli. However, little is known about longer-latency cortical AEPs despite their relevance for understanding echo processing and auditory stream segregation. Here, we used a non-invasive AEP setup with low click repetition rates on a trained harbor porpoise to test the long-standing hypothesis that echo information from distant targets is completely processed before the next click is emitted. We reject this hypothesis by finding reliable click-related AEP peaks with latencies of 90 and 160 ms, which are longer than 99% of click intervals used by echolocating porpoises, demonstrating that some higher-order echo processing continues well after the next click emission even during slow clicking. We propose that some of the echo information, such as range to evasive prey, is used to guide vocal-motor responses within 50-100 ms, but that information used for discrimination and auditory scene analysis is processed more slowly, integrating information over many click-echo pairs. We conclude by showing theoretically that the identified long-latency AEPs may enable hearing sensitivity measurements at frequencies ten times lower than current ABR methods.

Title translation Surgery in the elderly patients with cancer.
Abstract With an increasing aging population, there will be a greater need for cancer evaluation and treatment in older patients. Age alone is not a good predictor of postoperative morbidity, and a multidisciplinary approach is crucial for managing comorbidities. Preoperative optimisation, such as prehabilitation, may in some cases reduce postoperative complications, and minimal invasive techniques should be preferred whenever possible. In general, as summarised in this review, cancer treatment in older patients should be individualised based on comorbidities and life expectancy.

Abstract Child undernutrition persists in Cambodia despite recent progress. As Cambodia undergoes a shift in dietary consumption that coincides with economic, demographic, and epidemiologic changes, there is risk of ultra-processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages displacing nutrient-dense foods during the critical period of infant growth in the first 24 months. The aim of this study was to assess the introduction and intake of foods of low nutritional value and sugar-sweetened beverages and their association with undernutrition among children 24 months of age in rural and semi-urban Cambodia. Cross-sectional analyses of a 24-h dietary recall from a sample (

Abstract Background: Medical grade honey (MGH) has been introduced as a protective measure against surgical site infections in equine surgery, but the effect on suture material has not been investigated.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of MGH on the tensile properties of three synthetic absorbable suture materials.
    Study design: In vitro experiments.
Methods: Ten strands of Polydioxanone USP 2 (PD2), Polyglactin 910 USP 2 (PG2) and Polyglecaprone USP 2-0 (PC2-0) were incubated 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days in MGH, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), equine plasma (EP) and MGH mixed with equine plasma (HP). Mechanical testing was performed recording maximum load at failure (N), strain at failure and Young's modulus (N/mm
    Results: PD2 in MGH had a significantly higher tensile strength compared to PD2 in EP (p < 0.05, mean difference (md) = 16.95 N, CI95% (9.19-24.70 N)) and PBS (p < 0.05, md = 14.48 N CI95% (6.73-22.23 N)) on day 7 and the remaining time points. PG2 incubated in MGH had a significantly higher tensile strength compared to EP (p < 0.05, md = 69.28 N CI95% (64.16-74.40 N)) and PBS (p < 0.05, md = 56.90 N CI95% (51.78-62.02 N)) until day 28. PC2-0 incubated in MGH had a significantly higher tensile strength compared to EP (p < 0.05 md = 12.40 N CI95% (4.59 N-20.20 N)) and PBS (p < 0.05 md = 11.23 CI95% (3.42-19.03 N)) on day 7 and the remaining time points.
Main limitations: The sutures were unloaded during incubation and a single cycle to failure test was only performed, which does not reflect the in vivo environment where shear forces are present.
Conclusions: MGH did not negatively affect the tensile strength of the suture material and can safely be applied in contact with suture materials commonly used in equine surgery.

Abstract Introduction: Previous studies have found that online booking systems may be the preferred scheduling tool when booking appointments with healthcare providers. The aim of this study was to examine I) if outpatients with cancer and relatives of cancer patients wanted to use an online booking system to book appointments for the CT examinations, and II) if they wanted to book specific radiographers for the CT examinations.
Methods: An online questionnaire was distributed to outpatients with cancer and relatives of cancer patients registered in the user panel of the Danish Cancer Society. The questionnaires consisted of 13 questions for patients and eight questions for relatives. The study applied statistical analysis and qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach.
Results: In total, 555 patients out of 760 (73%) and 115 out of 341 (34%) relatives were included in the present study and 54% of the patients and 65% of the relatives responded that they wanted, "To a high degree" or "To some degree", to use an online system for booking the appointment of the CT examination. Furthermore, 49% of the patients and 60% of the relatives found it important, "To a high degree" or "To some degree", that the appointment of the CT examination also suited their relatives. Only 37% of the patients, in contrast to 56% of the relatives, were interested in the opportunity to book specific radiographers. Approximately half of the patients (48%) and relatives (58%) were interested in being scanned by the same radiographers.
Conclusion: In this study, a majority of patients and relatives were interested in using an online booking system to book their CT examinations. Furthermore, while a majority of the relatives were more interested in booking specific radiographers for the CT examinations, only a few patients were interested in this function.
Implications for practice: Using an online booking system to book the appointment could benefit the overall experience for cancer patients and relatives when attending a CT examination to ensure that the appointment also suits the relatives.

Abstract Pediatric spondylolisthesis is a common cause of back pain in children, typically managed conservatively with bracing and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. When posterolateral fusion is performed for refractory pain, pseudarthrosis and implant failure may occur, necessitating reoperation. To improve patient outcomes, there is a need for alternative surgical techniques to effectively manage high-grade isthmic slips. Here, the authors report the case of a child with Meyerding grade III anterolisthesis of L5 on S1 who was treated with a single-level, instrumented fusion using bilateral S1-L5 transdiscal screws, supported with L5-S1 posterolateral instrumentation and arthrodesis. Postoperatively, there was improvement in the patient's symptoms with good clinical and radiographic outcomes. The patient continues to be symptom free with radiographic evidence of hardware stability and bony fusion across the segment. The authors detail a novel surgical technique in children as well as a review of lumbosacral transdiscal screw fixation. Further evidence is required to definitively establish the safety, outcomes, and biomechanical strength of this technique.

Abstract Differences in fundamental frequency (F0) or pitch between competing voices facilitate our ability to segregate a target voice from interferers, thereby enhancing speech intelligibility. Although lower-numbered harmonics elicit a stronger and more accurate pitch sensation than higher-numbered harmonics, it is unclear whether the stronger pitch leads to an increased benefit of pitch differences when segregating competing talkers. To answer this question, sentence recognition was tested in young normal-hearing listeners in the presence of a single competing talker. The stimuli were presented in a broadband condition or were highpass or lowpass filtered to manipulate the pitch accuracy of the voicing, while maintaining roughly equal speech intelligibility in the highpass and lowpass regions. Performance was measured with average F0 differences (ΔF0) between the target and single-talker masker of 0, 2, and 4 semitones. Pitch discrimination abilities were also measured to confirm that the lowpass-filtered stimuli elicited greater pitch accuracy than the highpass-filtered stimuli. No interaction was found between filter type and ΔF0 in the sentence recognition task, suggesting little or no effect of harmonic rank or pitch accuracy on the ability to use F0 to segregate natural voices, even when the average ΔF0 is relatively small. The results suggest that listeners are able to obtain some benefit of pitch differences between competing voices, even when pitch salience and accuracy is low.

Abstract Background: In the United States, there are significant health inequities in perinatal care. This study examined differences in perinatal care provided to women based on the birthing person's designated race, within a large and diverse cohort of women.
Methods: This retrospective electronic medical record review identified patients receiving perinatal care within a large hospital system between January 2012 and September 2018 and examined associations between maternal designated race/ethnicity (Hispanic or non-Hispanic [NH] Black, Asian or White) and various provider treatment decisions.
Results: The study sample (N = 7056) was comprised of 36% Hispanic, 34% NH White, 21% NH Black, and 4% NH Asian women, aged 29.7 ± 6.3 years; 53% of the sample had private insurance, and 45% had Medicaid. Few differences by race were seen in perinatal care based on guidelines or expert recommendations (nondiscretionary care). Discretionary care, however, varied by race: Compared with NH White women, NH Black women were less likely to receive a prenatal depression screen (OR 0.8 [95% CI: 0.7, 0.9]) and more likely to have a urine drug test when denying drug use (OR 1.6 [95% CI 1.3, 2.0]), whereas Hispanic (OR 0.6 [95% CI: 0.5, 0.8]) and NH Asian (0.4 [95% CI 0.2, 0.9]) women were less likely to have a urine drug test completed when denying drug use.
Discussion: Perinatal care differs by maternal race/ethnicity, particularly when guidelines or expert recommendations are absent. Greater efforts need to be made to identify and mitigate providers' implicit and explicit biases; expanded professional guidelines may offer some protections against inequitable, discretionary care.
