Abstract Prior research showed that danwei, the work unit, was very important in determining workers' social, economic, and political lives in pre-reform urban China. In this paper, we argue that danwei continues to be an agent of social stratification in contemporary urban China. Using data from a 1999 survey we conducted in three large Chinese cities, Wuhan, Shanghai, and Xi'an, we assess the extent to which workers' socioeconomic well-being depends on the financial conditions of their danwei. Results show that the financial situation of danwei remains one of the most important determinants of earnings and benefits. However, the explanatory power of danwei's financial situation is much greater for earnings than for benefits.

Abstract Prior research has debated the relative importance of such factors as human capital, political capital and region in determining workers' earnings in reform-era urban China. This article argues that a main agent of social stratification in contemporary China continues to be the danwei, the work unit. Using data from a 1999 survey we conducted in three large Chinese cities, Wuhan, Shanghai and Xi'an, we assess the extent to which workers' earnings (including regular wages, bonuses and subsidies) depend on the profitability of their danwei. Results show that the financial situation of the danwei is one of the most important determinants of earnings in today's urban China. Furthermore, the importance of danwei profitability does not vary by city or by employment sector.

Abstract Antibiotic resistance is a big threat to public health. How to improve the therapeutic efficacy of conventional antibiotics is an effective way to address this issue. In order to enhance the antibacterial activity of conventional antibiotic erythromycin (EM), EM is conjugated to positively charged ε-poly-l-lysine (EPL) to obtain EPL modified EM (EPL-EM). The grafting ratio of EM can be calculated from the

Abstract Aging plays an important role in the formation of aroma characteristics of Huangjiu, a traditional Chinese alcoholic beverage. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC×GC-qMS)-based untargeted metabolomics combined with a multivariate analysis was used to investigate the dynamic variations in the aroma profile of Huangjiu during aging process and to establish the relationship between the changing volatile metabolite profiles and the age-dependent sensory attributes. A total of 144 volatile metabolites were identified by GC×GC-qMS and 63 were selected as critical metabolites based on variable importance in projection values and p-values. Based on the results of principal component analysis, orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis, and hierarchical clustering analysis, the samples of six different ages were divided into three groups: 1Y and 3Y samples, 5Y and 8Y samples, and 10Y and 15Y samples. The partial least-squares analysis results further revealed the relationship between the aromas attributes and variations of these volatile compounds. The high esters, aldehydes, and lactones contents contributed to the high intensities of the sweet and ester aroma attributes of the aged Huangjiu, while the high alcohols and ethyl esters contents contributed to the alcoholic and fruity aroma attributes of the newly brewed Huangjiu. These results improve our understanding of the chemical nature of the aroma characteristics of aged Huangjiu. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Huangjiu is often labeled with its age as a measure of quality, which influences consumers' choice. Dynamic variations in volatile compounds of Huangjiu during aging and its contribution to the aroma characteristics of Huangjiu were figured out, which will assist the industry to produce better quality aged Huangjiu for consumers.

Abstract Background: HIV-1 produces defective mutants in the process of reproduction. The significance of the mutants has not been well investigated.
Methods: The plasmids of wild type (HIV-1
Results: A total of 42 env genes and 8 NFLGs were successfully amplified and sequenced. Five types of recombinant patterns of env were identified and the same recombinant sites were detected in different patterns. The recombination hotspots were found distributing mainly in conservative regions of env. The recombination between genes of HIV-1
Conclusion: The existence of the defective HIV-1 promotes the phylogenetic evolution of the virus, thus increasing the diversity of virus population. The role of defective genes may be converted from junk genes to useful materials and cannot be neglected in the study of HIV-1 reservoir.
