Abstract Prion diseases are rare, fatal, progressive neurodegenerative disorders that affect both animal and human. Human prion diseases mainly present as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). However, there are no curable therapies, and animal prion diseases may negatively affect the ecosystem and human society. Over the past five decades, scientists are devoting to finding available therapeutic or prophylactic agents for prion diseases. Numerous chemical compounds have been shown to be effective in experimental research on prion diseases, but with the limitations of toxicity, poor efficacy, and low pharmacokinetics. The earliest clinical treatments of CJD were almost carried out with anti-infectious agents that had little amelioration of the course. With the discovery of pathogenic misfolding prion protein (PrPSc) and increasing insights into prion biology, amounts of novel technologies have attempted to eliminate PrPSc. This review presents new perspectives on clinical and experimental prion diseases, including immunotherapy, gene therapy, small-molecule drug, and stem cell therapy. It further explores the prospects and challenge associated with these emerging therapeutic approaches for prion diseases.

Abstract Karst formations in Southwest China are significantly developed. With the increase in tunnel construction year by year, constructing tunnels in areas of karst geology is inevitable. There are great safety risks associated with exposed karst caves, and the water inside the caves can seriously impact the tunnel structure and its filling materials. Traditional cave disposal technology mainly focuses on safe crossing treatment at the construction stage; however, problems such as backfill collapse and floor floating caused by karst water erosion during the service period are not considered. Therefore, proposals for a new construction scheme to ensure the stability and safety of the tunnel during the service period are urgently needed. Using Huangchongyan Tunnel as an example, we propose a safe crossing scheme of 'plate-pile-bedrock' for karst caves, based on a comparison of karst cave treatment schemes at home and abroad. In addition, considering the impact of karst water on the tunnel, we developed a 'bottom to top' reverse drainage structure, which solved the problem of floating during tunnel service. In our study, we developed a full life cycle disposal scheme to enable safe passage through tunnels in karst caves, providing a reference for the design and construction of similar projects.

Abstract Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) play an important role in oxidizing ammonia to nitrite in different marine environments; however, their relative contribution to ammonia oxidation in the deep-sea sediments is still largely unknown. Sediment samples from seamounts and the Challenger Deep along the arc of the Yap Trench and the Mariana Trench were used for the investigation of the geographical distribution of AOA and AOB at the cDNA level, with associated potential nitrification rates (PNRs) being measured. AOA was predominated by

Abstract In order to study the needs of identifying rock thin-section samples by manual observation in the field of geology, a method of electrochemical intelligent recognition of mineral materials based on superpixel image segmentation is proposed. The image histogram of this method can be used to represent the distribution of each pixel value of the image. This interval is consistent with the number of pixels in the method. And using the experiment, the CPU used in the experiment is Intel® Core™ i7-8700 3.2 GHz, the memory is 16 GB, and the GPU is NVIDIA GeForce GT × 1080 Ti, which ensures the accuracy of the experiment. Based on all the experimental results, it can be seen that after the two-stage processing of the designed superpixel algorithm and the region merging algorithm, the final sandstone slice image segmentation results are close to the results of manual labeling, which is helpful for the subsequent research on sandstone component identification. The feasibility of this method was verified.

Abstract Pathogenic viruses (e.g., Enteroviruses, Noroviruses, Rotaviruses, and Adenovirus) present in wastewater, even at low concentrations, can cause serious waterborne diseases. Improving water treatment to enhance viral removal is of paramount significance, especially given the COVID-19 pandemic. This study incorporated microwave-enabled catalysis into membrane filtration and evaluated viral removal using a model bacteriophage (MS2) as a surrogate. Microwave irradiation effectively penetrated the PTFE membrane module and enabled surface oxidation reactions on the membrane-coated catalysts (i.e., BiFeO

Abstract Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a pathological process in which ectopic bone develops in soft tissues within the skeletal system. Endochondral ossification can be divided into the following types of acquired and inherited ossification: traumatic HO (tHO) and fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). Nuclear transcription factor kappa B (NF-κB) signalling is essential during HO. NF-κB signalling can drive initial inflammation through interactions with the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). In the chondrogenesis stage, NF-κB signalling can promote chondrogenesis through interactions with mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT (protein kinase B, PKB) and other molecules, including R-spondin 2 (Rspo2) and SRY-box 9 (Sox9). NF-κB expression can modulate osteoblast differentiation by upregulating secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) and interacting with mTOR signalling, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signalling or integrin-mediated signalling under stretch stimulation in the final osteogenic stage. In FOP, mutated ACVR1-induced NF-κB signalling exacerbates inflammation in macrophages and can promote chondrogenesis and osteogenesis in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) through interactions with smad signalling and mTOR signalling. This review summarizes the molecular mechanism of NF-κB signalling during HO and highlights potential therapeutics for treating HO.

Abstract This research aims to estimate the relationship between green bond financing and the OECD nations' performance on the renewable energy indices. The study attempted to quantify the relationship between concepts by analyzing data from OECD countries for 2011-2019. Padroni unit root test, FMOLS, and DOLS method provide evidence for the study's results and convey broad policy implications on this important topic. The robustness is consequently examined through a long-term sensitivity analysis employing the FMOLS, and green bond financing nexus concerning the renewable energy indices is shown for comparison. The study showed that financing of green bonds had a predictable impact on renewable energy indices variables. Green bonds' unequal implications for renewable energy measures across the study period bear out this interpretation. The study's findings call for full suppot from government institutions, energy agencies, and departments to optimize energy efficiency, as green bond financing played a 32% role in OECD nation's renewable energy index constructions and increased per unit improvement in renewable energy sources by 9.6%. The research offers many policy recommendations for improving energy efficiency through renewable energy generation. Recent studies extend and contribute to the existing body of literature, although the scientific discussion on this subject matter still needs to be more detailed and understudied. Financial unpredictability may be transformed into a tremendous opportunity if the renewable energy business is appropriately regulated.
