Abstract Objective: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a pervasive psychiatric condition effecting approximately 21 million adults in the U.S. (8.4%). An estimated 30-60% of patients are resistant to traditional treatment approaches (medications and talk-therapy), alluding to the need for additional options. Two promising treatment modalities include transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine infusions; both have shown efficacy in standalone studies but have scarcely been investigated synergistically in the same group of participants.
Method: In the current study, 169 participants with treatment-resistant MDD received 36 treatments of Deep TMS-only (H1 + H7 protocols), while 66 received 36 treatments of Deep TMS (H1 + H7 protocols) and 6 IV infusions of ketamine over the course of 9 weeks. Depressive symptoms were compared pre- and -post treatment in both conditions using the PHQ-9.
Results: In both treatment groups, depressive symptoms were significantly reduced from pre-to-post and there were no significant differences in response between the TMS + ketamine condition and the TMS-only condition. The TMS + ketamine condition had an 80.30% response rate (53 out of 66) and 43.42% remission rate (28 out of 66) compared to a 76.92% response (130 out of 169) and 39.64% remission (67 out of 16) in the TMS-only condition.
Conclusion: These results support the notion that TMS treatments yield high response rates in treatment-resistant cases; however, in this investigation there was no added benefit for including 6 sessions of IV ketamine in conjunction with TMS. Future investigations using randomized-control designs and robust outcome measures are warranted.

Abstract Altimeter data from the first- and second-generation NASA Ice, Cloud and land Elevation (ICESat) satellite missions has the potential to transform a variety of key applications through improved decision making such as ocean navigation, surface water monitoring, and wildland fuels assessments. Here we review the literature using ICESat and ICESat-2 data to identify applications-relevant literature, defined as research that can lead to the use of data products in decision-making, policy making or risk reduction activity for societal benefit. We used the scholarly database ProQuest to identify bibliographic citations which were likely to lead to applications and user communities of data from the ICESat and ICESat-2 satellite lidar missions. We use the network visualization software tool Quid to create visual representation of clusters according to the textual similarity of their abstracts. We then text mine the NASA Applied Sciences Project Portfolio website to identify applications-relevant keywords and use these in combination with Quid-generated terms to create subsets of the literature according to how likely it was to lead to an application. Visualizations generated using the Quid software are presented separately for both ICESat and ICESat-2. We found an overall increase in the number of applications-relevant publications for ICESat-2 when comparing publications in the first four years after launch for both missions. This increase may be attributable to sustained efforts by the mission to reach out to the scientific and stakeholder communities during the pre-launch phase and to significant efforts by the mission to facilitate access to the data. However, our discovery of the literature also revealed a markedly low number of publications demonstrating actual applications of both ICESat and ICESat-2 data. We conclude that there is a need to cultivate a culture in academia that values linking science with use. We also identify multiple applications-relevant research where future applications efforts could focus.

Abstract Background: Rectal neuroendocrine tumors (RNETs) are often discovered on screening colonoscopy. Indications for staging and definitive resection are inconsistent in current guidelines. We evaluated the role of grade in guiding staging and procedural decision-making.
Methods: Patients with biopsy confirmed RNETs between 2004 and 2015 were reviewed. Baseline characteristics, staging investigations (biochemical and imaging), and endoscopic/surgical treatment were recorded. Associations between grade, preoperative staging, interventions, and survival were determined using Fisher-Freeman-Halton Exact, log-rank, and Kaplan-Meier analysis.
Results: Amongst 139 patients with RNETs, 9% were aged ≥ 75 years and 44% female. Tumor grade was: 73% grade 1 (G1), 18%, grade 2 (G2) and 9% grade 3 (G3). Staging investigations were performed in 52% of patients. All serum chromogranin A and 97% of 24-hour urine 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid tests were normal. The large majority of staging computed tomography (CT) scans were negative (76%) with subgroup analysis showing no G1 patients with CT identified distant disease compared with 38% of G2 and 50% of G3 patients (p < 0.001). G1 patients were more likely to achieve R0/R1 resections compared to G2 (95% vs. 50%, p < 0.001) and G1 patients had significantly better 5-year overall survival (G1: 98%, G2: 67%, G3: 10%, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Tumor grade is important in preoperative workup and surgical decision-making. Biochemical staging may be omitted but staging CT should be considered for patients with grade ≥ 2 lesions. Anatomic resections should be considered for patients with grade 2 disease.

Abstract Background: Our primary aim was to assess-in the German population-the effectiveness of e-cigarettes (ECs; with or without nicotine), nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and no use of evidence-based aids in smoking cessation.
Methods: Analysis of cross-sectional data from a representative survey of the population (age 14-96 years) conducted in 2016-2021. All current smokers and recent ex-smokers (< 12 months since quitting) who had made ≥ 1 attempt to quit in the past 12 months (n = 2740) were included. They were asked about use of cessation aids in their most recent quit attempt and their current smoking status.
Results: Two hundred thirty-nine respondents had used ECs, 168 NRT, and 2333 no aid. After adjustment for potential confounders, the odds of abstinence were 1.78 times higher for smokers who had used ECs in their quit attempt than in the group that had used no aids (95% confidence interval [1.09; 2.92]; p = 0.02) and 1.46 times higher than in the NRT group ([0.68; 3.13]; p = 0.34, Bayes factor = 1.26). Compared with the unaided group, the odds of abstinence were 2.34 times higher ([1.21; 4.53]; p = 0.01) in the subgroup using ECs with nicotine and 1.48 times higher ([0.68; 3.26]; p = 0.33) in the subgroup using ECs without nicotine. The unadjusted abstinence rates in people who had started their quit attempt > 6 months earlier were 15.6% [9.4; 23.8] in the ECs group and 13.8% [7.3; 22.9] in the NRT group.
Conclusion: In Germany, use of ECs in an attempt to quit smoking is associated with a higher rate of abstinence than attempting to quit unaided.

Abstract Prior research has been conflicted on whether gay community involvement serves as a risk or protective factor for body image and eating disorders (EDs) in sexual minority men (SMM), perhaps given that prior research has examined community involvement unidimensionally. The present study examined whether non-appearance-based ("social activism") and appearance-based ("going out/nightlife") community involvement differentially predicted ED prevention outcomes in SMM. Abstract Despite a recent increase in academic attention, little is known about how the general population perceives BDSM practitioners. Though the gay/lesbian community has undergone de-medicalization and de-stigmatization over time, the same process for BDSM practitioners is in its infancy. Past research suggests that BDSM practitioners do expect to be stigmatized by others, especially in the healthcare system; however, little is known about how the general population currently perceives and stigmatizes the BDSM community. In the current study, we found that the general population (
