Abstract Simultaneously incorporating heteroatoms and nonbenzenoid aromatic hydrocarbons, such as azulene, into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, offers a robust strategy for designing molecules with aesthetic appeal and unique properties. This study presents the successful synthesis and characterization of a series of azulene-based BO-doped heteroaromatics. Investigation into their optical and electrochemical properties, through UV–vis absorption, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT calculations, reveal their sensitivity to fluoride ions, making them promising candidates for chemosensor applications. Notably, unlike the parent azulene, which is sensitive to acid, these new compounds show negligible changes in absorption and NMR spectra when exposed to excess trifluoroacetic acid. This observation suggests that the introduction of BO unit effectively restrains the protonation of azulene moiety.

Abstract The structure-property relationship of photoelectric functional materials has been recognized as a hot topic. The study of the inner link between the band gaps and birefringence of optical materials is extremely crucial for the design and creation of novel optical devices, but still remains rather unexplored. Abstract: ... with a highly analogous structure to the B₃O₇ group and its derivate B(C₂N₅)₂ unit with a configuration of B₅O₁₀ ...

Abstract Studies on new functional structural units with both large hyperpolarizability and high anisotropy are essentially important for finding high-performance nonlinear optical (NLO) materials and enriching the material systems. Under the guidance of the “structure-analogue” strategy, the work utilizes the molecular engineering approach to direct the construction of target units, BC₂N₅O₂ and B(C₂N₅)₂ units. The BC₂N₅O₂ unit with a highly analogous structure to the B₃O₇ group and its derivate B(C₂N₅)₂ unit with a configuration of B₅O₁₀ group are designed as NLO-active units. Furthermore, two compounds with these new NLO-active units, BC₂N₅H₆(OH)₂·H₂O (I) and B(C₂N₅H₆.₅)₂(NO₃)₂ (II), are synthesized, successfully. These compounds exhibit excellent properties with second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses ranging from 0.5 to 5.9 times that of KDP and large birefringence (ΔnI = 0.181 @ 546.1 nm and ΔnII = 0.148 @ 546.1 nm). Theoretical calculations prove that the BC₂N₅O₂ and B(C₂N₅)₂ units make great contributions to the SHG effects and birefringence, which confirms that the BC₂N₅O₂ and B(C₂N₅)₂ units are novel NLO bifunctional units and could be excellent fundamental building blocks to construct amounts of novel NLO and birefringence crystals. Our studies would enlighten the research studies on biguanide complexes of boron.

Abstract Two new metal borate-phosphates, Pb4O(BO3)(PO4) (1) and Bi4O3(BO3)(PO4) (2), have been successfully designed and synthesized. The structures of the title compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compounds have similar crystal structures consisting of oxygen-centered (OPb4) or (OBi4) tetrahedra as well as isolated BO3 and PO4 groups. Structural comparison and the Madelung energy calculation indicate that the title compounds also exhibit a strong correlation with the known metal borates and phosphates. In addition, a strategy of BO3-PO4 substitution is proposed for designing new borate-phosphates. Thermal analyses, IR spectroscopy and UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy have also been performed.

Abstract In this work, the crystal structure and electronic structure as well as the synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet-ultraviolet-visible (VUV-UV-vis) luminescence properties of Li₆Y(BO₃)₃ (LYBO):Ce³⁺ phosphors were investigated in detail. The Rietveld refinement and DFT calculation reveal the P2₁/c monoclinic crystal phase and the direct band gap of the LYBO compound, respectively. Only one kind of Ce³⁺ 4f–5d transition is resolved in terms of the low temperature VUV-UV excitation, UV-vis emission spectra and luminescence decay curves. Furthermore, by constructing the vacuum referred binding energy (VRBE) scheme and applying the frequency-degenerate vibrational model, the impacts of 5d electron binding energy and electron–phonon coupling on luminescence of Ce³⁺ in LYBO are analysed. The results show that the Ce³⁺ emission in LYBO possesses a moderate intrinsic thermal stability. With the increase in concentration, the thermal stability of the emission gets worse due to the possible thermally-activated concentration quenching. In addition, the simulation of Ce³⁺ emission profile at low temperature reveals that the 4f–5d electronic transitions of Ce³⁺ ions can be treated to couple with one frequency-degenerate vibrational mode having the effective phonon energy of ∼257 cm⁻¹ with the corresponding Huang–Rhys parameter of ∼6, which indicates a strong electron–phonon interaction of Ce³⁺ luminescence in the Li₆Y(BO₃)₃ host. Finally, the X-ray excited luminescence spectrum of the LYBO:5%Ce³⁺ phosphor is measured to check the potential scintillator applications.

Abstract End-pumped by a continuous-wave 976 nm diode laser, efficient 1522 nm laser operation was demonstrated in an Er:Yb:GdAl(3)(BO(3))(4) crystal when a sapphire crystal was used as a heat diffuser. A continuous-wave 1522 nm laser with a maximum output power of 750 mW and slope efficiency of 36% was realized at an absorbed pump power of 4.1 W. The pulse performances of an acousto-optic Q-switched laser with various repetition frequencies were investigated in detail. In a repetition frequency range of 1-10 kHz, 1522 nm pulse lasers with a slope efficiency of about 10%, peak output power at the kilowatt level, and width of about 50 ns were first obtained in an Er:Yb:GdAl(3)(BO(3))(4) crystal pumped by a continuous-wave diode laser. The results indicate that the crystal is a promising gain medium for an actively Q-switched 1.5 μm laser.

Abstract Ureidomustin hydrochloride (BO-1055) was designed as a water-soluble nitrogen-mustard, which exhibited potent anticancer activity and was selected as a candidate for preclinical studies. However, up to date, there is rarely an easy and economic method to quantize ureidomustin in the biological samples. The aim of this study is to develop a simple yet valid quantization method to tackle this challenge. Here we present a combined high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) method in quantizing the ureidomustin in the plasma and various organs of Sprague-Dawley rats. The method was validated in terms of precision, accuracy, and extraction recovery. Furthermore, the established method was applied to study pharmacokinetics of ureidomustin in the rat's plasma and verified via a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method. Calibration curves of the plasma and organ samples were falling at the range between 0.5-50μg/mL and 0.1-50μg/mL (r(2)≥0.999 and CV≤±15%), respectively. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.1μg/mL for plasma samples and 0.05μg/mL for organ samples, while the detection limits of quantification (LOQ) were 0.5μg/mL for plasma samples and 0.1μg/mL for organ samples. The average recovery of ureidomustin was about 83%. These results demonstrated a linear pharmacokinetic pattern at dosages of 10 and 30mg/kg. The pharmacokinetic data revealed that ureidomustin was best fitted to a two-compartment model with a rapid distribution phase and a slow elimination phase. Besides, after a short intravenous administration time at the dose of 10mg/kg, ureidomustin was found to be quickly distributed to all organs in rats, accumulated mainly in the kidney, and only a limited amount was detected in the brain.
