Abstract Mitchell, KM, Pritchett, RC, Gee, DL, and Pritchett, KL. Comparison of circumference measures and height-weight tables with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry assessment of body composition in R.O.T.C. cadets. J Strength Cond Res 31(9): 2552-2556, 2017-Height-weight tables and circumference measures are used by the U.S. Army to predict body composition because they require little equipment or expertise. However, agreement between the Army's new 2002 circumference equation and an established laboratory technique has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to quantify agreement in body fat percentages between the Army's circumference measures (taping) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA); second to determine categorical agreement between height-weight tables and DXA. Male Reserve Officer Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) cadets (N = 23; 20.6 ± 1.6 years, 179.1 ± 6.6 cm; 81.4 ± 10.3 kg) were taped according to Army protocol to predict body fat. The % body fat prediction was compared with DXA through a Bland-Altman Plot with ±2-4% body fat established as a zone of agreement (ZOA). Thirteen out of 23 cadets fell outside the ZOA. No cadet was over the compliance threshold (20-22% fat) using the tape method, however, with DXA, 7 out of 23 cadets were noncompliant. Height-weight tables provided a moderate level of categorical agreement with DXA. The results depict poor agreement between taping and DXA, as taping generally underestimated % body fat. Compared with taping, height-weight tables were better able to identify excess fat weight.

Abstract The local and intermediate structure of stoichiometric LaMnO3 has been studied in the pseudocubic and rhombohedral phases at high temperatures (300-1150 K). Neutron powder diffraction data were collected and a combined Rietveld and high real space resolution atomic pair distribution function analysis was carried out. The nature of the Jahn-Teller (JT) transition around 750 K is confirmed to be orbital order to disorder. In the high-temperature orthorhombic (O) and rhombohedral (R) phases, the MnO6 octahedra are still fully distorted locally. More importantly, the intermediate structure suggests the presence of local ordered clusters of diameter approximately 16 A ( approximately 4 MnO6 octahedra) implying strong nearest-neighbor JT antiferrodistortive coupling. These clusters persist well above the JT transition temperature even into the high-temperature R phase.

Abstract The primary visual cortex (V1) and the superior colliculus (SC) both occupy stations early in the processing of visual information. They have long been thought to perform distinct functions, with the V1 supporting the perception of visual features and the SC regulating orienting to visual inputs. However, growing evidence suggests that the SC supports the perception of many of the same visual features traditionally associated with the V1. To distinguish V1 and SC contributions to visual processing, it is critical to determine whether both areas causally contribute to the detection of specific visual stimuli. Here, mice reported changes in visual contrast or luminance near their perceptual threshold while white noise patterns of optogenetic stimulation were delivered to V1 or SC inhibitory neurons. We then performed a reverse correlation analysis on the optogenetic stimuli to estimate a neuronal-behavioral kernel (NBK), a moment-to-moment estimate of the impact of V1 or SC inhibition on stimulus detection. We show that the earliest moments of stimulus-evoked activity in the SC are critical for the detection of both luminance and contrast changes. Strikingly, there was a robust stimulus-aligned modulation in the V1 contrast-detection NBK but no sign of a comparable modulation for luminance detection. The data suggest that behavioral detection of visual contrast depends on both V1 and SC spiking, whereas mice preferentially use SC activity to detect changes in luminance. Electrophysiological recordings showed that neurons in both the SC and V1 responded strongly to both visual stimulus types, while the reverse correlation analysis reveals when these neuronal signals actually contribute to visually guided behaviors.

Abstract Purpose: Cannulated screw fixation for femoral neck fractures is often limited by concerns of avascular necrosis (AVN) occurring, historically seen in 5-40% of fixed intracapsular fractures. This study aims to assess the outcomes, particularly the AVN rate, associated with current surgical techniques within our unit.
Methods: We conducted a single-center cross-sectional study, manually searching operative records between July 14, 2014, and December 1, 2018, identifying patients with intracapsular fractured neck of femur fixed with cannulated screws, with a minimum of two years follow-up. Patient records and radiographs were reviewed for clinical and radiographic diagnoses of AVN, non-union, post-operative metalwork infection, and screw penetration of the head. Additionally, fracture pattern and displacement, screw configuration, reduction techniques, and adequacy of reduction were recorded, with radiographs independently analyzed by four orthopedic surgeons.
Results: Fifty-six patients were included; average age of 67 years (range 30-100). Forty-two patients (75%) sustained displaced fractures and 14 patients (25%) had undisplaced fractures. Two (4%) patients developed AVN, with no cases of non-union, post-operative metalwork infection or screw penetration of the head. Eight patients (14%) sustained a high-energy injury, though none of these patients developed AVN. All fractures required closed reduction; no open reductions performed. Twenty-seven (64%) of reductions were adequate.
Conclusion: Our observed AVN rate is notably lower than the widely reported figures, even among a significant proportion of displaced fractures that were fixed. This study underscores that with adequate fixation, cannulated screws represent an excellent option for treating intracapsular neck of femur fractures, even in cases of displaced fracture patterns with imperfect reduction.
