    Abstract A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo apresentar parte do percurso histórico e algumas particularidades da Biblioteca do antigo Imperial Colégio de Pedro II, com destaque para a organização de seu acervo e os agentes envolvidos em sua gestão, desde 1837 até a década de 20. Optou-se pela realização de uma pesquisa bibliográfica e documental por meio dos materiais informacionais presentes no Núcleo de Documentação e Memória do Colégio, e, outros mais, disponíveis na web, dentre os quais destacamos: anuários, relatórios de diretores do Colégio, almanaques do pessoal docente e administrativo do Colégio Pedro II, Catálogo do Externato e relatórios dos Ministros e Secretários de Estados dos Negócios do Império. Conclui que a Biblioteca do Imperial Colégio de Pedro II constitui-se em um lugar de acesso às múltiplas memórias e histórias desta mais que centenária instituição de ensino, tendo sido montada, inicialmente, para cobrir as necessidades de um grupo específico.

    Abstract O presente artigo relata experiência do Colégio Pedro II na preservação digital de documentos. O Colégio Pedro II caracteriza-se por ser uma instituição tradicional de ensino público que ao longo de sua trajetória de 175 anos produziu documentos históricos que remetem às atividades de ensino e ao cotidiano da administração escolar pública e retratam a história da educação brasileira. A instituição mantém acervos importantes e a todo o momento aumenta a produção de trabalhos de pesquisa que devem ser preservados, disponibilizados e ter o acesso garantido no futuro. O Colégio vem investindo em recursos e desenvolvendo projetos para a preservação da memória institucional através da Comissão de Atualização da Memória Histórica, em parceria com o Núcleo de Documentação e Memória e o Laboratório de Digitalização do Acervo Histórico. A instituição, por meio dessas ações, pretende manter seus acervos digitais seguramente armazenados para recuperação, disseminação, acesso e uso futuro. Assim, torna-se necessário instituir uma política de repositório institucional para o Colégio que contemple critérios básicos para tratar os documentos digitais, como principal recurso para promover a preservação digital em longo prazo.

    Abstract Until the beginning of the 19th century, psychiatric patients did not receive specialized treatment. The problem that was posed by the presence of psychiatric patients in the Santas Casas de Misericórdia and the social pressure from this issue culminated in a Decree of the Brazilian Emperor, D. Pedro II, on July 18, 1841. The “Lunatic Palace” was the first institution in Latin America exclusively designed for mental patients. It was built between 1842 and 1852 and is an example of neoclassical architecture in Brazil, located at Saudade Beach in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In the 1930s and 1940s, the D. Pedro II Hospital was overcrowded, and patients were gradually transferred to other hospitals. By September of 1944, all the patients had been transferred and the hospital was deactivated. Key words: psychiatry, history, madness. Até o início do século 19, os pacientes psiquiátricos não recebiam nenhum tipo de tratamento específico. A pressão social da época decorrente do problema representado pela presença dos pacientes psiquiátricos nas Santas Casas de Misericórdia culminou no Decreto do Imperador brasileiro, D. Pedro II, em 18 de julho de 1841. O “Palácio dos Loucos” foi a primeira instituição na América Latina voltada exclusivamente para a assistência aos doentes mentais. Foi construído entre 1842 e 1852, na Praia da Saudade na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, e é um dos expoentes da arquitetura neoclássica do Brasil. Nas décadas de 1930 e 1940, o então Hospital D. Pedro II estava superlotado, tendo sido os pacientes gradualmente transferidos para outros hospitais. Em setembro de 1944, concluiu-se a tranferência de todos os pacientes e o hospital foi desativado.
