Abstract Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a rare developmental defect of the diaphragm, characterized by the herniation of abdominal contents into the chest, resulting in varying degrees of pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension. Significant advances in the prenatal diagnosis and identification of prognostic factors have resulted in the continued refinement of the approach to fetal therapies for CDH. In the postnatal period, protocolized approaches to lung-protective ventilation, nutrition, prevention of infection, and early aggressive management of pulmonary hypertension have led to improved outcomes in infants with CDH. Surgical repair of CDH is not urgent in most circumstances and can be delayed until the pulmonary status of the patient has stabilized. This article provides a comprehensive review of CDH, focusing on the complex pathophysiology, advances in prenatal diagnosis, fetal interventions, and optimal postnatal management of CDH.

Abstract Purpose: To determine the effect of phacoemulsification surgery, which is one of the types of cataract surgery by using ultrasonic power to break up the crystalline lens and clean it with vacuum, on anterior chamber flare (ACF) and choroidal vascular index (CVI).
Methods: For this cross-sectional study, patients were included if they had cataract with nucleus hardness grade 2 or 3, no systemic inflammatory disease, and not use of anti-inflammatory drugs/prostaglandins preoperatively. ACF using a laser flare meter and CVI in patients underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification was recorded preoperatively, on the postoperative 1st day, 1st week, and 1st month.
Results: Fifty-six eyes were included. ACF was 9.00 ± 2.90 ph/ms preoperatively. Although ACF increased significantly on postoperative day-1 (39.38 ± 23.31ph/ms) and decreased gradually until the 1st month (14.03 ± 6.03ph/ms) after the operation, it was still significantly higher at the 1st month (p < 0.001). Macular and peripapillary CVI increased significantly on postoperative day-1 (0.64 ± 0.03/0.63 ± 0.05) and week-1 (0.64 ± 0.04/0.62 ± 0.04) (p = 0.01, p < 0.001); the postoperative 1st month was similar to the preoperative one (0.59 ± 0.06/0.58 ± 0.06). The relationship between the change in ACF and the change in CVI was not significant.
Conclusion: Phacoemulsification causes raises in ACF and CVI due to increased intraocular inflammation. The fact that ACF was significantly higher in postoperative month-1 and CVI returned to its preoperative value suggests that the effect of uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery on the increase in inflammation in the anterior segment lasts longer than in the posterior segment. These results suggest that ACF and CVI follow-up may be clinically important in the follow-up of postoperative inflammation.

Abstract Purpose: This study compares in vitro remineralization potential and cytotoxicity of fluoride-free varnish combinations containing bioactive glass, eggshell, and membrane powder and fluoride varnish formulations on artificial caries lesions.
Methods: Artificial caries lesions were formed in two windows on third molars. One of the windows was coated with one of the following varnish formulations: FV (fluoride varnish), F-BAGV (fluoride and bioactive glass containing varnish), BAGV (bioactive glass containing varnish), EPV (eggshell powder containing varnish), EMP-EPV (eggshell membrane protein and eggshell powder containing varnish), STMP-EMP-EPV (sodium trimetaphosphate-treated eggshell membrane protein and eggshell powder containing varnish). The samples were remineralized, then investigated under scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analyses were performed by X-ray dispersive analysis (EDX). In addition, the traditional colorimetric tetrazolium-based reduction assay (XTT) and the modern impedance-based real-time cell analysis system (RTCA) were used to investigate their cytotoxicity.
Results: The varnish applied area's Ca/P ratio was lower than stoichiometric hydroxyapatite except for EPV (1.66) and STMP-EMP-EPV (1.67) groups. Undiluted extracts of all varnishes, 1:2 dilutions of FV and F-BAGV groups were cytotoxic in XTT assay. In RTCA, the normalised cell index of the EMP-EPV and STMP-EMP-EPV groups was higher than the control group.
Conclusion: Bioactive glass, eggshell, eggshell membrane proteins and STMP-treated eggshell and eggshell membrane protein containing varnish have similar remineralizing effect to fluoride-containing varnish on demineralized enamel. Integrating biological or bioactive components instead of fluoride into the dental varnishes might reduce cytotoxicity.

Abstract Cardiovascular disease is anticipated to remain the leading cause of death globally. Due to the current problems connected with using autologous arteries for bypass surgery, researchers are developing tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs). The major goal of vascular tissue engineering is to construct prostheses that closely resemble native blood vessels in terms of morphological, mechanical, and biological features so that these scaffolds can satisfy the functional requirements of the native tissue. In this setting, morphology and cellular investigation are usually prioritized, while mechanical qualities are generally addressed superficially. However, producing grafts with good mechanical properties similar to native vessels is crucial for enhancing the clinical performance of vascular grafts, exposing physiological forces, and preventing graft failure caused by intimal hyperplasia, thrombosis, aneurysm, blood leakage, and occlusion. The scaffold's design and composition play a significant role in determining its mechanical characteristics, including suturability, compliance, tensile strength, burst pressure, and blood permeability. Electrospun prostheses offer various models that can be customized to resemble the extracellular matrix. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and comparative review of recent studies on the mechanical properties of fibrous vascular grafts, emphasizing the influence of structural parameters on mechanical behavior. Additionally, this review provides an overview of permeability and cell growth in electrospun membranes for vascular grafts. This work intends to shed light on the design parameters required to maintain the mechanical stability of vascular grafts placed in the body to produce a temporary backbone and to be biodegraded when necessary, allowing an autologous vessel to take its place.

Abstract Purpose: Urethroplasty is the most effective treatment method for anterior urethral strictures, which constitute an important health concern for males. This study aims to investigate factors that may predict treatment failure following urethroplasty for anterior urethral strictures and evaluate outcomes of different urethroplasty techniques.
Methods: This retrospective study utilized univariate and multivariate analyses to identify factors affecting treatment success following different urethroplasty techniques performed by a single surgeon on male patients with anterior urethral strictures. Surgical outcomes of different urethroplasty techniques were evaluated individually.
Results: Urethroplasty procedures performed on 244 patients with a mean age of 54 years and a mean stricture length of 4.7 cm produced a success rate of 79.1%. Multivariate analyses identified stricture length and number of previous internal urethrotomy procedures as factors predicting urethroplasty success (HR 1.265, 95% CI 1.129-1.416, p < 0.001 and HR 1.188, 95% CI 1.038-1.361, p = 0.013, respectively). The eight surgical techniques used by the surgeon produced success rates that varied between 50% and 86.2%.
Conclusion: Urethroplasty can offer satisfactory outcomes for anterior urethral strictures. Accordingly, a longer stricture length and greater number of previous internal urethrotomy procedures were associated with greater risk for urethroplasty failure. Moreover, urethroplasty techniques must be selected based on multifactorial evaluation and performed at experienced centers.

Abstract Background: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the surgical outcomes after enucleation of esophageal leiomyomas and present the feasibility of enucleation using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.
Methods: The medical records of 13 patients (8 males, 5 females; mean age 45.9 years; range, 30 to 69 years) who underwent open or thoracoscopic surgery for an esophageal leiomyoma between April 2007 and June 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were evaluated with regard to age, sex, presenting symptoms, duration of symptoms, size and localization of tumors, diagnostic methods, surgical methods, conversion to open surgery, morbidity and mortality, discharge time, and follow-up period.
Results: Of the patients, four were operated via thoracotomy and nine via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Enucleation was successfully completed with thoracoscopy in five patients. Four patients required conversion to thoracotomy. In the early postoperative period, two of these four patients developed complications and underwent re-thoracotomy. A solitary leiomyoma was detected in all, but one patient (multiple). The mean size of the tumors was 68.4 mm. Complications were seen in only one patient during follow-up and no recurrence was observed in any patient.
Conclusion: Our study results indicate that thoracoscopic enucleation of esophageal leiomyoma is a safe, feasible, and effective technique in selected patients and conversion to open surgery can be easily done for any reason during the procedure.

Abstract Prenatal exposure to environmental factors may play an important role in the aetiopathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We aim to investigate the potential effects of low-dose x-rays from dental diagnostic x-rays on neurodevelopment and molecular mechanisms associated with ASD in developing zebrafish embryos. Zebrafish embryos were divided into four groups and exposed using a dental x-ray unit: control, 0.08, 0.15 and 0.30 seconds, which are exemplary exposure settings for periapical imaging. These exposure times were measured as 7.17, 23.17 and 63.83 mSv using optical stimulated luminescence dosimeters. At the end of 72 hours post-fertilization, locomotor activity, oxidant-antioxidant status, and acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity were analyzed. Expression of genes related to apoptosis (

Abstract Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been shown to decrease the risk of ischemic stroke in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This study aims to investigate whether DOACs result in a significant change in lesion volume and the severity of the subsequent disability in patients who have experienced a stroke.
Methods: The study included a total of 137 patients with NVAF and acute stroke. The cohort included 76 patients using DOACs, 21 patients using acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), and 40 patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation (NDAF) who did not use antiaggregants or anticoagulants. Diffusion-weighted MRI was performed 6-12 hours after the first stroke symptoms and infarct volumes were measured by two independent observers. Baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at discharge and period of hospitalization were calculated.
Results: When patients using DOACs due to NVAF and patients with NDAF were compared, the volumes of patients using DOACs (median 7.8 vs 23.1 cm
Conclusion: We observe, while using DOACs, the infarct volumes of patients who experience stroke are smaller than those with NDAF and using ASA, as well as mRS scores at discharge are low and length of hospital stay is short.

Abstract In this paper, we present a detailed study of the following system of difference equations% \begin{equation*} x_{n+1}=\frac{a}{1+y_{n}x_{n-1}},\ y_{n+1}=\frac{b}{1+x_{n}y_{n-1}},\ n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, \end{equation*}% where the parameters $a$, $b$, and the initial values $x_{-1},~x_{0},\ y_{-1},~y_{0}$ are arbitrary real numbers such that $x_{n}$ and $y_{n}$ are defined. We mainly show by using a practical method that the general solution of the above system can be represented by characteristic zeros of the associated third-order linear equation. Also, we characterized the well-defined solutions of the system. Finally, we study long-term behavior of the well-defined solutions by using the obtained representation forms.
