Abstract Any study of violence in the sociology of sport owes a substantial debt of gratitude to Eric Dunning. This is certainly true of Canadian sociology of sport where, for at least three generations, the ideas of Dunning and his mentor, Norbert Elias, have proven both foundational and enduring for a core group of scholars. In this paper, two recognized scholars in the Canadian figuration, Michael Atkinson and Kevin Young, reflect on Dunning’s influence in shaping both their own and others’ understanding of how ‘sport matters’; in this case, the analysis of violence inside and outside of sport. The authors consider their own research ‘in the field’ of sport violence, their personal career intersections with figurational thinking, and both the formal and informal mentorship Eric provided over several decades. For both Michael and Kevin, Eric helped to shape not only the contents of their theoretical leanings over the course of time, but also instructed them to envision substantive issues related to sport violence as both long-term sociogenic and psychogenic processes more broadly. The paper concludes with personal reflections on Eric the scholar and gentleman.

Abstract "Conservation of Marine Birds is the first book to outline and synthesize the myriad of threats faced by one of the most imperiled groups of birds on earth. With more than half of all 346 seabird species worldwide experiencing population declines and 29% of species recognized as globally threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the timing to determine solutions to threats could not be more urgent. Written by a diverse team of international experts on marine birds, this book explores the environmental and biogeographical factors that influence seabird conservation and provides concrete recommendations for mounting climate change issues. This book will be an important resource for researchers and conservationists, as well as ecologists and students who want to understand seabirds, the threats they are facing, and tactics to help conserve and protect them. Key Features: Outlines both threats and solutions in the marine and terrestrial realm. Synthesizes information to provide a comprehensive strategy moving forward, especially considering climate change. Created by a team of experts with the latest and most comprehensive knowledge of seabird conservation."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) recently published the report of Task Group (TG) 302, which provides recommendations on acceptance, commissioning, and ongoing routine quality assurance (QA) for surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) systems. One of the recommended monthly QA tests is a dynamic localization accuracy test. This work aimed to develop an automated procedure for monthly SGRT dynamic localization QA. An anthropomorphic head phantom was rigidly attached to the 6-dof couch of a TrueBeam linac. TrueBeam Developer Mode was used to take an MV image of the phantom at the starting position, then automatically drive the couch through a series of translations and rotations, taking an MV image after each translation. The Identify SGRT system monitored the motion of the phantom surface from the starting position. Translations assessed on MV images were compared to translations reported in trajectory log files and Identify log files. Rotations were compared between trajectory log files and Identify log files. Three experiments were conducted. None of the translations or rotations from any experiment exceeded the tolerance values for stereotactic ablative body radiation therapy (SABR) recommended by AAPM TG-142. Maximum deviations from the expected translation values from MV imaging, trajectory log files, and Identify log files were -0.94mm, -0.11mm, and -0.78mm, respectively. Maximum deviations from the expected rotation values from trajectory log files and Identify log files were 0.01 and -0.2 degrees, respectively. The proposed method is a simple automated way to complete monthly dynamic localization QA of SGRT systems.

Abstract It is impractical to develop a new parts collection for every potential host organism. It is well-established that gene expression parts, like genes, are qualitatively transferable, but there is little quantitative information defining transferability. Here, we systematically quantified the behavior of a parts set across multiple hosts. To do this, we developed a broad host range (BHR) plasmid system compatible with the large, modular CIDAR parts collection for

Abstract Reproduction in mammals includes two general categories of behaviors: mating and parenting. Historically and cross-culturally, men invest more than women in mating; women invest more than men in parenting. Sex differences in attention and attitude toward mating and parenting stimuli have rarely been assessed together despite theoretical interest. To evaluate these differences simultaneously in a naturalistic setting, 582 study participants (459 women, 123 men) were presented with sexual and infant images, online in the privacy of their home, at three time periods spanning several weeks for a more reliable result. Attention was measured by covertly recording viewing time of images using Qualtrics software, and attitude was measured via self-report after each viewing session. Men reported a more positive attitude than women toward the sexual images; women reported a more positive attitude than men toward the infant images. Women viewed the infant images marginally longer than did men, and the infant-to-sexual viewing ratio was larger for women. The sexual-to-infant viewing ratio was larger for men than for women. Unexpectedly, both genders viewed the sexual images longer than the infant images, with no significant gender difference in the sexual image viewing time. The results suggest that women and men may give equal attention to visual sexual stimuli despite self-reported sex differences in interest. The possibly underestimated valence of visual sexual stimuli for women is discussed.
