Abstract This paper presents highlights from research on community-based water activism in Guelph, Ontario, Canada – one of the most water-rich regions of the world. Social network analysis in conjunction with qualitative methods was used to explore the influence of water activists' normative motivations on the mobilization of collective action on water issues. The findings revealed that even where scarcity is only a remote, long-term threat, decision-making and economic activity involving water have the potential to trigger local citizen action based on a fundamental conflict between the drive of commodification and a countervailing, popularly-held normative consensus concerning water. The findings suggest that a popular consensus that holds water as a commons – and as such, places universal access to water, environmental sustainability, and local community self-reliance ahead of profit making – is an important trigger for collective action when violated by decisions or actions taken in the local community. Understood as such, I draw on scholarship on the moral economy to argue that collective action on water issues in Guelph exposes a unifying theme that connects Guelph's water activists to each other and to a growing worldwide movement to defend the water commons. Moreover, with Canadian social work striving to incorporate matters of environmental justice into its scholarship and practice, in this paper I outline a rationale and identify priorities for social work involvement in this area.

Abstract Electronic (E)-cigarette use or vaping is associated with pulmonary injury. Users can present with wide-ranging symptoms, varying degrees of pulmonary injury, and respiratory distress. Lung injury secondary to vaping is associated with a variety of patterns on pulmonary imaging. Typical radiographic findings are consistent with bilateral, basilar ground-glass opacities and or consolidation with septal thickening. We present a case of vape-associated pulmonary injury (VAPI) in a previously healthy adult who was found to have atypical radiographic findings. A 34-year-old male presented with a chief complaint of a two-week history of malaise, nausea, cough, and worsening shortness of breath. A chest CT scan without contrast revealed diffuse nodules in a miliary pattern. The patient reported a six-month history of tetrahydrocannabinol

Abstract A central goal of synthetic biology is the reprogramming of living systems for predetermined biological functions. While many engineering efforts have been made in living systems, these innovations have been mainly employed with microorganisms or cell lines. The engineering of multicellular organisms including animals remains challenging owing to the complexity of these systems. In this context, microbes, with their intricate impact on animals, have opened new opportunities. Through the utilization of the symbiotic relationships between microbes and animals, researchers have effectively manipulated animals in various ways using engineered microbes. This focused approach has demonstrated its significance in scientific exploration and engineering with model animals, coral preservation and restoration, and advancements in human health.

Abstract Coastal horned lizards (   Phrynosoma coronatum) have undergone severe declines in southern California and are a candidate species for state and federal listing under the Endangered Species Act. Quantitative data on their habitat use, abundance, and distribution are lacking, however. We investigated the determinants of abundance for coastal horned lizards at multiple spatial scales throughout southern California. Specifically, we estimated lizard distribution and abundance by establishing 256 pitfall trap arrays clustered within 21 sites across four counties. These arrays were sampled bimonthly for 2-3 years. At each array we measured 26 "local" site descriptors and averaged these values with other "regional" measures to determine site characteristics. Our analyses were successful at identifying factors within and among sites correlated with the presence and abundance of coastal horned lizards. These factors included the absence of the invasive Argentine ant (  Linepithema humile) (and presence of native ant species eaten by the lizards), the presence of chaparral community plants, and the presence of sandy substrates. At a regional scale the relative abundance of Argentine ants was correlated with the relative amount of developed edge around a site. There was no evidence for spatial autocorrelation, even at the scale of the arrays within sites, suggesting that the determinants of the presence or absence and abundance of horned lizard can vary over relatively small spatial scales ( hundreds of meters). Our results suggest that a gap-type approach may miss some of the fine-scale determinants of species abundance in fragmented habitats.

Abstract An 83-year-old man with a history of chronic myelogenous leukaemia in remission maintained with bosutinib presented with new-onset fevers. He denied pain and had no other focal symptoms. Ultrasound imaging revealed mild gallbladder wall thickening. Non-contrasted CT revealed right upper quadrant inflammation of indeterminate source. The diagnosis of acalculous cholecystitis was made on the third day when a CT with oral contrast demonstrated a remarkably inflamed biliary tree. The gallbladder was surgically removed and found to be necrotic. The case highlights an unusual presentation for a well-known condition. Both ultrasound and CT have limited diagnostic sensitivity for acalculous cystitis. This case adds to existing literature to support development of acalculous cholecystitis in non-critically ill patients. Clinicians should maintain awareness of this condition among patients presenting to the hospital or clinic with abdominal pain. Careful discussion with radiology and surgery is indicated to guide diagnostic testing when initial imaging results are indeterminate.

Abstract Spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome (SPTLS) is a rare phenomenon that can manifest in rapidly proliferating hematological malignancies and solid tumors prior to initiating cytotoxic therapy. We encountered a patient who originally presented with diffuse lymphadenopathy, abdominal distention, and dyspnea, who had laboratory abnormalities suggestive of SPTLS. His peripheral flow cytometry and lymph node biopsy revealed blastoid-variant mantle cell lymphoma. Prior to initiating chemotherapy, acute kidney injury (AKI) and uric acid had improved with intravenous fluids and the initiation of allopurinol. However, after beginning chemotherapy, the patient developed a second AKI concerning for tumor lysis syndrome (TLS). He went on to have renal recovery and did not require renal replacement therapy. With the exception of case reports, there is limited evidence to guide general medicine clinicians who encounter cases of SPTLS. Expert-based guidelines are available to guide use of rasburicase, an uricase enzyme, before initiation of chemotherapy for certain malignancies when risk for TLS is considered high. Despite these guidelines, the role of rasburicase in preventing AKI remains controversial after inconclusive results in a meta-analysis. The causative relationship between uric acid and AKI in TLS is based on a mechanism of tubular obstruction. There are also mechanisms by which uric acid may cause AKI without tubular obstruction related to acute hyperuricemic nephropathy. Further characterization of the role of uric acid in causing AKI in patients without tubular obstruction may identify new mechanisms of injury and offer insight into new treatment strategies.
