Abstract Current studies have indicated that the number of individuals living with pain has risen in recent years, with nearly half of all adults in some countries living with some form of pain. Such trends have prompted researchers to explore differences in pain across different sociodemographic groups, with a dominant focus on educational attainment. However, much of the studies fail to consider the confounding role of early life characteristics, such as family background. Using data on over 400,000 individuals from the UK Biobank, we look at how educational attainment is associated with nine different domains of pain (headache, facial, neck, back, hip, knee, stomach, all over, and no pain). Ultimately, we find that compared to those with no educational credentials, education is associated with anywhere between a 0.1-15% change in the likelihood of reporting pain, depending on pain type and education level, with the greatest change occurring in those with the highest level. Yet, when accounting for family background characteristics in the form of sibling fixed effects, nearly all relationships between education and pain fell by either 50% or were eliminated. We ultimately conclude that failure to consider early life characteristics, such as family background characteristics may lead to inflated estimates of pain, and that future research should delve into early life exposures and their influence on pain in adulthood.

Abstract In this paper, we present novel evidence of the extent to which intergenerational mobility is generalized or specific across domains of human and health capital. That is, do children who experience greater mobility in one domain (e.g., income) also experience mobility in other domains (education, health status, health behaviors, crime). Using rich data in Add Health, we find evidence against generalized mobility-families that are more mobile in one domain are not more mobile in others. We then ask a place-based version of this question, motivated by Chetty et al. (2014)'s work showing high levels of geographically-based income mobility in the US. The school-based sampling combined with parent-child links across many outcome domains of the Add Health allows us to use a common dataset between the two analyses. Like our individual-based results, we find limited evidence of generalized mobility by place-indeed, most estimates suggest close-to-zero correlations between many of the ten domains we explore.

Abstract Realistic and renewable laboratory models that accurately reflect the distinct clinical features of childhood cancers have enormous potential to speed research progress. These models help us to understand disease biology, develop new research methods, advance new therapies to clinical trial, and implement personalized medicine. This chapter describes methods to generate patient-derived xenograft models of neuroblastoma and rhabdomyosarcoma, two tumor types for which children with high-risk disease have abysmal survival outcomes and survivors have lifelong-debilitating effects from treatment. Further, this protocol addresses model development from diverse clinical tumor tissue samples, subcutaneous and orthotopic engraftment, and approaches to avoid model loss.

Abstract Purpose: The annual teaching oral-systemic health (TOSH) virtual clinical simulation and case study activity exposes interprofessional teams of nurse practitioner, nurse midwifery, dental, medical, and pharmacy students to a virtual clinical simulation experience that uses oral-systemic health as a clinical exemplar for promoting interprofessional core competencies. The present study examines changes in participating students' self-reported interprofessional competencies following participation in virtual TOSH from 2020 to 2022. These findings are also compared to those from in-person TOSH (2019) to examine the equivalence of student outcomes of both the in-person and virtual programs.
Methods: A pre- and post-test evaluation design was used to examine the effectiveness of exposure to the TOSH program on self-reported attainment of interprofessional competencies for participating students using the interprofessional collaborative competency attainment scale.
Results: Analysis of pre- and post-surveys demonstrated statistically significant improvement in students' self-rated interprofessional experience competencies following the virtual TOSH program, which aligns with results from the in-person cohorts. Similar findings between the in-person and virtual cohorts indicated no statistically significant difference between the two formats.
Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the success of TOSH in promoting attainment of interprofessional competencies among future health professionals. We encourage administrators and faculty who lead health professional programs to take advantage of using virtual simulations as an integral component of interprofessional oral health clinical experiences where students from different health professions learn from and about each other in assessing and treating patients across the lifespan.
