    Abstract Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality due to its repetitive remission and relapse. The Jian-Wei-Yu-Yang (JW) formula has a historical application in the clinic to combat gastrointestinal disorders. The investigation aimed to explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms of JW.
    Methods: 2% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) was diluted in drinking water and given to mice for 5 days to establish murine models of experimental colitis, and different doses of JW solution were administered for 14 days. Network pharmacology analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were utilized to predict the therapeutic role of JW against experimental colitis and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). 16S rRNA sequencing and untargeted metabolomics were conducted using murine feces. Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, and wound healing experiments were performed to confirm the molecular mechanisms.
    Results: (1) Liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry was utilized to confirm the validity of the JW formula. The high dose of JW treatment markedly attenuated DSS-induced experimental colitis progression, and the targets were enriched in inflammation, infection, and tumorigenesis. (2) The JW targets were related to the survival probability in patients with colorectal cancer, underlying a potential therapeutic value in CRC intervention. (3) Moreover, the JW therapy successfully rescued the decreased richness and diversity of microbiota, suppressed the potentially pathogenic phenotype of the gut microorganisms, and increased cytochrome P450 activity in murine colitis models.     Conclusion: The JW capsule attenuated the progression of murine colitis by a prompt resolution of inflammation and bloody stool and by re-establishing a microbiome profile that favors re-epithelization and prevents carcinogenesis.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Jin-Si-Wei (JSW), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, have cognitive enhancing effect and delay the memory decline in an animal model of AD, which has been reported. However, the therapeutic mechanism of JSW in the treatment of AD remains unclear.
    Aim of the study: This study aimed to verify the pharmacodynamics of JSW in the treatment of AD, and to explore its potential mechanism based on network pharmacology, molecular docking and experimental validation both in vitro and in vivo.
    Materials and methods: In this study, the underlying mechanism of JSW against AD was investigated by the integration of network pharmacology. Then, the core pathways and biological process of JSW were verified by experiment, including behavioral test and pathological and biochemical assays with 6-month-old APP
    Results: A Drug-Ingredient-Target network was established, which included 363 ingredients and 116 targets related to the JSW treatment of AD. The main metabolic pathway of JSW treatment for AD is neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathway, and biological processes are mainly involved in Aβ metabolic process. In vivo experiments, compared with APP/PS1 mice, the cognitive and memory ability of mice was significantly improved after JSW administration. In brain tissue of APP/PS1 mice, JSW could increase the contents of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP-1), enkephalinase (NEP) and Acetyl choline (ACh), and decrease the contents of Aβ
    Conclusions: JSW improves AD in APP/PS1 mice, and this therapeutic effect may be achieved in part by altering the neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathway.

    Abstract Understanding the factors driving propagation from meteorological to hydrological drought is crucial for drought mitigation. In this study, an integrated framework based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool model, standardised drought indices and Geographical Detector were used to investigate how and to what extent watershed properties and human activities affect the spatial heterogeneity of drought propagation in the Wei River Basin, a typical arid and semi-arid region in China. Results indicated that (1) spatially, the propagation times increased from southwest to northeast. Seasonally, the propagation was shorter and stronger in summer and autumn. (2) The aridity index significantly affected the spatial distribution of drought propagation time for the entire basin, especially in summer, while human activities primarily drove spatial distribution in the sub-basins. The explanatory power of any two independent factors was non-linearly enhanced after the interaction. (3) Watershed properties potentially impacted the anthropogenic driving factor of drought propagation. Strong anthropogenic effects on drought propagation often occurred in watersheds with moderate drought levels, steep slopes, low elevations, and small areas, and the key factors varied seasonally. These findings help elucidate the multifaceted effects of watershed properties and human activities on drought propagation. The proposed framework and the results of this study provide valuable guidance for formulating precise drought control strategies in the Wei River Basin and worldwide.

    Abstract Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is pathologically characterized by an immune response accommodative insufficiency and dysbiosis accompanied by persistent epithelial barrier dysfunction. The Cao-Xiang-Wei-Kang (CW) formula has been utilized to treat gastrointestinal disorders in the clinic. The present study was designed to delineate the pharmacological mechanisms of this formula from different aspects of the etiology of ulcerative colitis (UC), a major subtype of IBD. Dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) was given to mice for a week at a concentration of 2%, and the CW solution was administered for 3 weeks. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics were conducted to examine the changes in the microbiome profile, and biochemical experiments were performed to confirm the therapeutic functions predicted by system pharmacology analysis. The CW treatment hampered DSS-induced experimental colitis progression, and the targets were enriched in inflammation, infection, and tumorigenesis, which was corroborated by suppressed caspase 3 (Casp3) and interleukin-1b (IL-1b) and increased cleaved caspase 3 expression and casp-3 activity in the colon samples from colitis mice subjected to the CW therapy. Moreover, the CW therapy rescued the decreased richness and diversity, suppressed the potentially pathogenic phenotype of the gut microorganisms, and reversed the altered linoleic acid metabolism and cytochrome P450 activity in murine colitis models.     Abstract Background: Although Liu-Wei-Bu-Qi capsule (LBC) inhibits tumor progression by improving the physical condition and immunity of patients with lung cancer (LC), its exact mechanism of action is unknown.
    Aim: To through compound multi-dimensional network of chemical ingredient-target-disease-target- protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, the principle of action of Chinese medicine prescription was explained from molecular level.
    Methods: Network pharmacology and molecular docking simulations were used to analyze the relationship among the main components, targets, and signaling pathways of LBC in treatment of LC.
    Results: From the analysis, 360 LBC active ingredient-related targets and 908 LC-related targets were identified. PPI network analysis of the LBC and LC overlapping targets identified 16 hub genes. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis suggested that LBC can target the vascular endothelial growth factor signaling pathway, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, prolactin signaling pathway, FoxO signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway and HIF-1 signaling pathway in the treatment of LC. Molecular docking simulations showed that quercetin had the best affinity for MAPK3, suggesting that quercetin in LBC may play an important role in the treatment of LC.
    Conclusion: The results showed that the active ingredients in LBC can play a crucial role in the treatment of LC by regulating multiple signaling pathways. These results provide insights into further studies on the mechanism of action of LBC in the treatment of LC.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: A famous traditional oral Chinese medicine formula, Si-Miao-Yong-An decoction, has been used to treat thromboangiitis obliterans from the Qing Dynasty. Because its therapeutic principles including clearing away heat, detoxification, accelerating blood circulation and relieving pains are consistent with acute radiation-induced cutaneous wounds in traditional Chinese medicine, we tried to add herbs and improve them into an external dosage form, called Jia-Wei-Si-Miao-Yong-An Fang (JWSMYA). However, its mechanism on radiation-induced cutaneous wounds is still unknown.
    Aim of the study: This study evaluated the therapeutic effect of JWSMYA and investigated the mechanism of repair and anti-fibrosis on acute radiation-induced cutaneous wounds with JWSMYA.
    Materials and methods: Firstly, we prepared JWSMYA, and determined the composition through UHPLC LC-MS/MS. Then we used ionizing radiation to make a cutaneous wound model of rats, and observed wound healing through their skin injury score, wound contraction percentage and histological staining. In addition, immunohistochemical staining, Western blot analysis, qRT-PCR and Elisa were used to explore wound rehabilitation and anti-fibrosis mechanisms.
    Results: An in vivo assay revealed that JWSMYA promoted the repairment of acute radiation-induced cutaneous wounds, facilitated MAPK/ERK phosphorylation, inhibited PI3K/AKT activation, reduced the level of alpha-smooth muscle actin (a-sma), collagen type-I alpha 2 (Col1a2) and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) in cutaneous tissues. However, no statistical difference was found in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
    Conclusion: JWSMYA accelerated the repair of acute radiation-induced cutaneous wounds, which might be associated with the MAPK/ERK pathway. In addition, PI3K/AKT might be associated with the inhibition of fibrosis and the promotion of high-quality wound healing.

    Abstract Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of treating refractory chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (RCIT) with San Wei Sheng Huo Decoction (SWSHD) as the main formula.
    Methods: A retrospective study was conducted and the data of RCIT patients treated with SWSHD as the main formula were collected. Changes in peripheral blood platelet (PLT) levels at different time points of treatment were examined and the significant effective rate (SER) and effective rate (ER) were analyzed. We measured the increase in peripheral blood PLT count before and after treatment, analyzed the differences in PLT count increase for different degrees of RCIT treatment, and evaluated the safety of the treatment.
    Results: A total of 35 cases of RCIT were included in the study. With SWSHD as the main treatment formula, the 2-week ER and SER were 74.29% and 14.29%, respectively, the 2-month ER and SER were 84.38% and 60.50, respectively, and the 1-year ER and SER were 92.31% and 80.77%, respectively. PLT count increased at all time points after treatment compared with that before treatment (
    Conclusion: SWSHD takes effect rapidly and its effect is long-lasting and stable. Furthermore, SWSHD has a more significant effect on severe RCIT.
