    Abstract Herba Cistanche, known as Rou Cong Rong in Chinese, is a very valuable Chinese herbal medicine that has been recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Rou Cong Rong has been extensively used in clinical practice in traditional herbal formulations and has also been widely used as a health food supplement for a long time in Asian countries such as China and Japan. There are many bioactive compounds in Rou Cong Rong, the most important of which are phenylethanoid glycosides. This article summarizes the up-to-date information regarding the phytochemistry, pharmacology, processing, toxicity and safety of Rou Cong Rong to reveal its pharmacodynamic basis and potential therapeutic effects, which could be of great value for its use in future research.

    Abstract Cistanches Herba is a medicinal plant that has tonification properties and is commonly used in Asia. Owing to the imbalance between supply and demand, adulterants are frequently added for profit. However, there is no regulatory oversight because quality control tools are not sufficient for identifying heavily processed products. Thus, a novel molecular tool based on nucleotide signatures and species-specific primers was developed. The ITS2 regions from 251 Cistanches Herba and adulterant samples were sequenced. On the basis of SNP sites, four nucleotide signatures within 30~37 bp and six species-specific primers were developed, and they were validated by artificial experimental mixtures consisting of six different species and different ratios. This method was also applied to detect 66 Cistanches Herba products on the market, including extracts and Chinese patent medicines. The results demonstrated the utility of nucleotide signatures in identifying adulterants in mixtures. The market study revealed 36.4% adulteration: 19.7% involved adulteration with Cynomorium songaricum or Cistanche sinensis, and 16.7% involved substitution with Cy. songaricum, Ci. sinensis, or Boschniakia rossica. The results also revealed that Cy. songaricum was the most common adulterant in the market. Thus, we recommend the use of species-specific nucleotide signatures for regulating adulteration and verifying the quality assurance of medicinal product supply chains, especially for processed products whose DNA is degraded.

    Abstract Written by Wang Hao-gu (1200-1264) of the Yuan Dynasty, Yi lei yuan rong (Fighting Diseases in Medical Field) includes 12 volumes, with the twelve channels as its outline. It first describes the cold pathogenic diseases, and appended with the miscellaneous diseases. It is characterized by breaking the boundaries of cold pathogenic diseases and miscellaneous diseases, not only introducing the syndrome differentiation of six channels theory into the treatment of miscellaneous diseases, but also using the prescriptions of miscellaneous diseases for the treatment of six channels syndromes. The combination of treatment of these two kinds of diseases had a clinical significance. According to General Catalogue of the Ancient Literature of Chinese Medicine in China, there were many editions of the book, including 12-volume editions and 1-volume editions. The former was written by Wang Hao-gu and the later was the abstract of the book, compiled by Du Si-jing of the Yuan Dynasty.

    Abstract Based on me data concerning detailed survey on land in the year 2009 and land change in the year 2010 in Rong County, a mountainous region of Sichuan Province, by using quantitative geographical model, we conduct quantitative analysis of the status quo of land use in Rong County in terms of land use diversification, land use centralization, land use combination type, land use geographic significance and comprehensive use degree of land use. m e results show some characteristics as follows. Firstly, land use in study area displays prominent characteristic of diversification: there is a high degree of completeness land use type; there is a great similarity among towns. Secondly. there is limited combination number of land use type; mostly the combination number of the towns is farmland. Thirdly, the town with prominent characteristic of diversification of land use in Rong County, have low degree of centralization of land use and relatively big combination number of land use type, and vice versa. Fourthly, the type and quantity of agricultural land resources with geographical significance are relatively complete with nothing missing; it abounds in untapped land, but the overall index values of land use are smaller than 300, with low overall use degree of land.
