Abstract Systematic codes are of important practical interest for communications. Network coding, however, seems to conflict with systematic codes: although the source node can transmit message packets, network coding at the intermediate network nodes may significantly reduce the number of message packets received by the destination node. Is it possible to obtain the benefit of network coding while preserving some properties of the systematic codes? In this paper, we study the systematic design of batched network coding, which is a general network coding framework that includes random linear network coding as a special case. A batched network code has an outer code and an inner code, where the latter is formed by linear network coding. A systematic batched network code must take both the outer code and the inner code into consideration. Based on the outer code of a BATS code, which is a matrix-generalized fountain code, we propose a general systematic outer code construction that achieves a low encoding/decoding computation cost. To further reduce the number of random trials required to search a code with a close-to-optimal coding overhead, a triangular embedding approach is proposed for the construction of the systematic batches. We introduce new inner codes that provide protection for the systematic batches during transmission and show that it is possible to significantly increase the expected number of message packets in a received batch at the destination node, without harm to the expected rank of the batch transfer matrix generated by network coding.

Abstract Local graph clustering methods aim to detect small clusters in very large graphs without the need to process the whole graph. They are fundamental and scalable tools for a wide range of tasks such as local community detection, node ranking and node embedding. While prior work on local graph clustering mainly focuses on graphs without node attributes, modern real-world graph datasets typically come with node attributes that provide valuable additional information. We present a simple local graph clustering algorithm for graphs with node attributes, based on the idea of diffusing mass locally in the graph while accounting for both structural and attribute proximities. Using high-dimensional concentration results, we provide statistical guarantees on the performance of the algorithm for the recovery of a target cluster with a single seed node. We give conditions under which a target cluster generated from a fairly general contextual random graph model, which includes both the stochastic block model and the planted cluster model as special cases, can be fully recovered with bounded false positives. Empirically, we validate all theoretical claims using synthetic data, and we show that incorporating node attributes leads to superior local clustering performances using real-world graph datasets.

Abstract Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the femoral head is an important issue for orthopedists and radiologists in clinical practice. With the rapid development of technological advances in radiation therapy and the improvement in cancer survival rates, the incidence of ORN is rising, and there is an unmet need for basic and clinical research. The pathogenesis of ORN is complex, and includes vascular injury, mesenchymal stem cell injury, bone loss, reactive oxygen species, radiation-induced fibrosis, and cell senescence. The diagnosis of ORN is challenging and requires multiple considerations, including exposure to ionizing radiation, clinical manifestations, and findings on physical examination and imaging. Differential diagnosis is essential, as clinical symptoms of ORN of the femoral head can resemble many other hip conditions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, total hip arthroplasty, and Girdlestone resection arthroplasty are effective treatments, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. The literature on ORN of the femoral head is incomplete and there is no criterion standard or clear consensus on management. Clinicians should gain a better and more comprehensive understanding on this disease to facilitate its early and better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This article aims to review the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of osteoradionecrosis of the femoral head.

Abstract The ultrasensitive DNA methyltransferase (Dam MTase) assay is of high significance for biomedical research and clinical diagnosis because of its profound effect on gene regulation. However, detection sensitivity is still limited by shortcomings, including photobleaching and weak signal intensities of conventional fluorophores at low concentrations. Plasmonic nanostructures with ultrastrong electromagnetic fields and fluorescence enhancement capability that can overcome these intrinsic defects hold great potential for ultrasensitive bioanalysis. Herein, a silica-coated gold nanostars (Au NSTs@SiO

Abstract The microphenotype plays a key role in bridging the gap between the genotype and the complex macro phenotype. In this article, we review the advances in data acquisition and the intelligent analysis of plant microphenotyping and present applications of microphenotyping in plant science over the past two decades. We then point out several challenges in this field and suggest that cross-scale image acquisition strategies, powerful artificial intelligence algorithms, advanced genetic analysis, and computational phenotyping need to be established and performed to better understand interactions among genotype, environment, and management. Microphenotyping has entered the era of Microphenotyping 3.0 and will largely advance functional genomics and plant science.

Abstract Anammox is an efficient low-carbon nitrogen removal technology for mature landfill leachate (MLL). However, it produces 11 % nitrate theoretically, which needs further removal. In this study, the mechanisms of exploiting refractory organic matter (ROM) from an MLL as an inner carbon source for advanced nitrogen removal via anammox were systematically analyzed, and the effects of hydraulic retention time on nitrogen and ROM removal/utilization were investigated. Without any external carbon source, a total nitrogen and organic carbon removal efficiency of 94.50 % and 27.12 %, respectively, were achieved, with a nitrogen loading rate of 2.4 kg N/(m
