    Abstract The decline in eggshell quality resulting from aging hens poses a threat to the financial benefits of the egg industry. The deterioration of eggshell quality with age can be attributed to changes in its ultrastructure and chemical composition. Specific matrix proteins in eggshells have a role in controlling crystal growth and regulating structural organization. However, the variations in ultrastructure and organic matrix of eggshells in aging hens remain poorly understood. This study assessed the physical traits, mechanical quality, chemical content, as well as the microstructural and nanostructural properties of eggs from Jing Tint 6 hens at 38, 58, 78, and 108 wk of age. Subsequently, a quantitative proteomic analysis was conducted to identify differences in protein abundance in eggshells between the ages of 38 and 108 wk. The results indicated a notable decline in shell thickness, breaking strength, index, fracture toughness, and stiffness in the 108-wk-age group compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). The ultrastructure variations primarily involved an increased ratio of the mammillary layer and a reduced thickness of the effective layer of eggshell in the 108-wk-age group (P < 0.05). However, no significant differences in eggshell compositions were observed among the various age groups (P > 0.05). Proteomic analysis revealed the identification of 76 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the eggshells of the 38-wk-age group and 108-wk-age group, which comprised proteins associated with biomineralization, calcium ion binding, immunity, as well as protein synthesis and folding. The downregulation of ovocleidin-116, osteopontin, and calcium-ion-related proteins, together with the upregulation of ovalbumin, lysozyme C, and antimicrobial proteins, has the potential to influence the structural organization of the eggshell. Therefore, the deterioration of eggshell quality with age may be attributed to the alterations in ultrastructure and the abundance of matrix proteins.

    Abstract In hydrological studies, satellite and reanalysis precipitation products are increasingly being used to supplement gauge observation data. This study designed the composite simulation index (COSI), considering two factors: F1 (data accuracy assessment) and F2 (hydrological simulation performance), to compare the performance of the latest satellite-based and reanalysis-based precipitation products (IMERG, ERA5, ERA5-Land), the prior precipitation products (TRMM, CMADS), and the multi-source weighted-ensemble precipitation (MSWEP). The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was then applied to compare and analyze the hydrological simulation performance of four preferred products using three data fusion methods including simple model averaging, variance-based weighted averaging, and the latest quantile-based Bayesian model averaging (QBMA). The results can be summarized as follows: (1) Reanalysis products are superior to satellite-based products in terms of F1. However, the satellite-based precipitation products exhibit less BIAS and relatively higher F2, while the MSWEP has relatively high performance on both F1 and F2. (2) Among reanalysis-based precipitation products, CMADS has the best COSI value of 0.53. Although ERA5-Land shows good performance for individual parameters, the comprehensive assessment reveals that ERA5 outperforms ERA5-Land in terms of both F1 and F2. (3) IMERG and TRMM exhibit similar spatiotemporal patterns and similar F1, but IMERG is superior in F2. (4) QBMA outperformed traditional methods in F2, improving the NS coefficient of SWAT model from 0.74 to 0.85. These findings provide a useful reference for analyzing the strengths and limitations of satellite-based and reanalysis precipitation products, and also provide valuable ideas for the combined application of multi-source precipitation products in hydrological studies.

    Abstract Background: Cervical spondylopathy is a common musculo-articular disorder, multiple exercises are recommended. Chinese fitness exercises are prevalent and used to treat various diseases.
    Aim: To explore the efficacy of Chinese fitness exercise Yi Jin Jing exercise in intervening the cervical spondylopathy in adolescents.
    Patients and methods: The study was conducted in 60 adolescent patients with cervical spondylopathy, with 30 patients in each group.
    Methods: The study was conducted in 60 adolescent patients with cervical spondylopathy, with 30 patients in each group. The observation group was required to take Yi Jin Jing exercise, and the control group took the brisk walking exercise. The first week was the preparatory period for the patients, and then the participants were required to do exercises three times a week for at least 30 minutes in the later 3 weeks. Before and after treatment, Neck Disability Index (NDI) scores, pain visual analog scale (VAS) scores, and cervical curvature in both groups were observed, and the incidence of adverse events in both groups was recorded during the trial.
    Results: The NDI and VAS scores in both groups statistically decreased after intervention and mildly increased at follow-up, while the reduction in scores of the Yi Jin Jing group was more significant. Cervical curvature in both groups improved on day 28 compared to day 0. There were no adverse reactions during the evaluation period.
    Conclusion: The Chinese health-care qigong Yi Jin Jing exercise is more effective than brisk walking in improving the cervical range of motion and relieving pain in adolescents with cervical spondylopathy. Trial registration/Protocol registration: Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2000030723).

    Abstract ETHNIC PHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: "Yin-Jing" medicine (YJM) has been widely used by both ancient and modern Chinese medicine practitioners during long-term clinical practice. However, it remains unclear how to best guide other medicines to the targeted organs in a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription. Here, in an attempt to explain the scientific connotation of the YJM property (YJMP) attributed to a basic TCM theory, Platycodon grandiflorum (PG) was chosen as a case study to reveal the mystery of YJMP theory.
    Aim of the study: The main purpose of this study is to employ modern chemical and molecular biology methods to confirm the "Yin-Jing" effect of PG, and further clarify its material basis and related possible mechanism.
    Materials and methods: The ammonia-induced lung injury rat model was utilized to determine the optimal dosage of traditional prescription Hui Yan Zhu Yu decoction (HYZYD) using Wright Giemsa staining, HE staining, Masson staining, and TUNEL analysis. With the same way, PG was confirmed to have potentiating therapeutic effect (PTE) by comparison with HYZYD and [HYZYD-PG]. TMT proteomics was used to reveal the "Yin-Jing" mechanism of action.     Abstract Land use change greatly affects the runoff characteristics of the basin, which in turn affects the distribution of surface water and groundwater in the region. Quantitative analyses of the hydrological response of watershed runoff to land use change are conducive to the formulation of sustainable water resource strategies. In this paper, the impact of land use change on runoff characteristics in the Jing River Basin was evaluated using the SWAT model, the land use pattern of the Jing River Basin in 2040 was predicted using CA-Markov model, and five land use change scenarios were set up in combination with the trend of land use transfer, and the response relationship between land use change and runoff hydrological characteristics in the basin was studied. The results show that the land use changes reduce runoff and change the hydrological cycle process of the basin. The hydrological response of different land use types varies significantly, but only has a less impact on annual runoff. Farmland has a promoting effect on production flow; woodland and grassland are not conducive to the formation of surface runoff and will increase underground runoff and evapotranspiration in the basin. The increase in vegetation coverage after returning farmland to woodlands and grasslands has reduced surface runoff, increased the recharge of groundwater, and played a positive role in ecological restoration in the river basin. The research results are of great significance for understanding the hydrological consequences of land use change and the rational planning of land use patterns in river basins.

    Abstract Air pollution is still one of the most severe problems in northern China, especially in the Jing-Jin-Ji region around Beijing. In recent years, China has implemented many stringent policies to address the air quality issue, including promoting energy transition toward cleaner fuels in residential sectors. But until 2020, even in the Jing-Jin-Ji region, nearly half of the rural households still use solid fuels for heating. For residents who are not covered by the clean heating campaign, we analyze five potential mitigation strategies and evaluate their environmental effects as well as the associated health benefits and costs. We estimate that substitution with electricity or gas would reduce air pollution and premature mortality more strongly, while the relatively low investment costs of implementing clean coal or biomass pellet lead to a larger benefit-cost ratio, indicating higher cost efficiency. Hence, clean coal or biomass pellet could be transitional substitution options for the less developed or remote areas which cannot afford a total transition toward electricity or natural gas in the short term.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: The meridian (GuiJing) theory is a unique theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) which has been guiding the clinical practice of TCM for thousands of years, but physiological foundation of TCM's meridian remains to be clarified. Recent investigations have marked gut microbiota as a key mediator for the pharmacological effects of various TCMs. However, most studies focus on the response of gut microbes to a single drug or formula, the interactive effects of different drugs on gut microbiota are scarcely investigated.
    Aim of the study: In this work, we evaluated the co-regulatory effects of different TCMs on gut microbiota when they were individually combined with Coptis chinensis (HL), and assessed the relationship between gut microbiota and the GuiJing of TCMs.
    Materials and methods: Normal C57BL/6 mice were gavaged with HL extract for 14 days to disrupt the gut microbial community. Simultaneously, animals were treated with different TCMs which all possess antimicrobial activity but belong to different meridians. The gut microbiota was analyzed by full-length 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to get a thorough bacterial profile at the species level.
    Results: Administration of HL dramatically disrupted the gut microbiota and decreased the alpha diversity. Co-administration of different TCMs alleviated the adverse impact of HL on gut microbiota in a meridian-dependent manner. TCMs belonging to Shaoyin meridian moderately shifted the gut microbiota, while TCMs belonging to Taiyin and especially Jueyin meridians remarkably recovered the gut microbial community to the normal status. Decreased Firmicutes (Clostridia and Bacilli) and Actinobacteria (Bifidobacteriales) and increased Proteobacteria (Enterobacteriaceae) were main features of HL-induced gut dysbiosis. TCMs belonging to Shaoyin, Taiyin and Jueyin meridians gradually reversed the abundance of these bacteria to their normal levels. Simultaneously, the promoting effect of HL on beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia muciniphila and Blautia coccoides was substantially preserved when co-administration of these TCMs, suggesting that co-treatment with these TCMs may reduce the toxicity of HL without deteriorating its beneficial effects.
    Conclusion: Combination of special TCMs may alleviate the adverse effect of HL on gut microbiota while preserving its beneficial actions. Gut microbiota may be a potential biological indicator of the meridian of TCMs.

    Abstract Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly used in an extra-label manner in commercial laying hens for the treatment of foot lesions, which are a common issue in this species. The present study aimed to determine the depletion profiles of meloxicam in eggs with multiple oral administration under 2 different dosing regimens and to further recommend reasonable withdrawal intervals (WDIs). Meloxicam (1 mg/kg) was administered orally to laying hens under 2 dosing schedules: 10 doses at 24-h intervals and 15 doses at 12-h intervals. Eggs were collected daily after the first dosing, and meloxicam concentrations in both yolk and white were determined by a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The weight ratio of white to yolk in the whole egg was 1.54 (the mean of 20 eggs with repeated tests), and this value combined with the meloxicam concentrations in white and yolk were used to calculate the drug concentrations in whole eggs. Meloxicam was quickly eliminated from egg white, and its concentrations could only be quantified at 2 time points during the elimination phase. The elimination half-lives in yolk and whole egg were 3.07 ± 1.00 and 2.98 ± 0.88 d, respectively, after 10 repeated doses. And the corresponding elimination half-lives were 2.30 ± 0.83 and 2.18 ± 0.67 d, respectively, after repeated 15 doses. Considering the time when meloxicam was not detectable in eggs with the time of ovum development and maturation, a withdrawal interval (WDI) was suggested as 17 d for both dosing schedules. The current results enriched the study on the residue of meloxicam in domestic Jing Hong laying hens and provided WDIs to help ensure animal-derived food safety.

Her documentary Under the Dome further shows how the internet has transformed the ecology of media and provided innovative platforms for social engagement. Chai’s embracing her own feelings of vulnerability, which dominated the beginning of her career, and using it to channel public feelings and drive news reporting has made her a distinctively controversial media personality. Her leaving the CCTV can be viewed as a self-marginalization that helps her sustain that vulnerability, through which she gains resilience and critical power. The use of maternal voice in Under the Dome exemplifies her use of the power of vulnerability in its most mature form. The controversiality about that voice signals that post-socialist China remains a space where environmental and gender discourses are contested and negotiated.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Guhan Yangsheng Jing (GHYSJ) is a traditional Chinese patent medicine, that has the function of nourishing the kidney and replenishing the essence, invigorating the brain and calming the mind. It is often used to treat dizziness, memory loss, sleep disorders, fatigue, and weakness, etc. However, its mechanism for improving sleep has not yet been determined.
    Aim of the study: This study aims to explore the effects of GHYSJ on Sleep Deprivation (SD)-induced hippocampal neuronal pyroptotic injury, learning and cognitive abilities, and sleep quality in mice.
    Methods: In this study, a PCPA-induced SD mouse model was established. We assessed the influence of GHYSJ on sleep quality and mood by using the pentobarbital-induced sleep test (PIST) and sucrose preference test (SPT). The pharmacological effects of GHYSJ on learning and memory impairment were evaluated by the Morris Water Maze (MWM) and Open Field Test (OFT). Pathological changes in the hippocampal tissue of the SD rats were observed via HE staining and Nissl staining. The severity of neuronal damage was evaluated by detecting the expression of the neuronal marker Microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2), via immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. Furthermore, the levels of neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT), γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and Glutamic acid (Glu) in hippocampal tissues, as well as the expression of inflammatory factors Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and Interleukin-18 (IL-18) in serum, were determined by ELISA. The expressions of mRNA and protein NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3), Gasdermin D (GSDMD), Cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase1 (Caspase1), High mobility group box-1 protein (HMGB1) and Apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing CARD (ASC) related to the cellular ferroptosis pathway were tested and analyzed by RT-PCR and WB respectively.
    Results: PCPA significantly diminishes the sleep span of experimental animals by expediting the expenditure of 5-HT, consequently establishing an essentially direct SD model. The intervention of GHYSJ displays remarkable efficacy in mitigating insomnia symptoms, encompassing difficulties in initiating sleep and insufficient sleep duration. Likewise, it ameliorates memory function impairments induced by sleep deprivation, along with symptoms such as fatigue and depletion of vitality. GHYSJ exerts a protective influence on hippocampal neurons facilitated by inhibiting the down regulation of MAP2 and maintaining the equilibrium of neurotransmitters (5-HTP, 5-HT, GABA, and Glu). It diminishes the expression of intracellular pyroptosis-associated inflammatory factors (IL-1β and IL-18) and curbs the activation of the NLRP3/Caspase1/GSDMD pyroptosis-related signaling pathways, thereby alleviating the damage caused by hippocampal neuronal pyroptosis.
