Abstract Chinese and Japanese Music-Dramas is the result of a conference on the relations between Chinese and Japanese music-drama held at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, on October 1-4, 1971. In addition to the Association for Asian Studies, four U-M departments participated in the conference: the Center for Japanese Studies, the Center for Chinese Studies, the School of Music, and the Speech Department. One important inspiration for the creation of such an interdisciplinary conference was the fact that each participant had found, after years of individual research on music-drama in East Asia, consistent frustration caused by attempts to deal on their own with multiple cultural and technical problems. Another motivating force was an awareness among many members of the four disciplines involved that the topic is in fact one of the largest untouched fields of scholarly endeavor in both Asian and theatrical studies. The collection opens with J. I. Crump's exploration of the Ming commentators who began to subject Yüan musical drama to the same critiques as other literature from the past. In the second chapter, Rulan Chao Pian looks to the structure of arias in Peking Opera for clues about what distinguishes this art form. William P. Malm turns to three key sources for the performance conventions of Japanese Noh drama to glean any Sino-Japanese music relationships that exist in technical terms and practices. In the fourth essay, Carl Sesar analyzes a Noh play that stages the tension between Chinese influence and Japanese originality. Roy E Teele concludes the volume with a formal study of Noh play structure to assess lineages of influence from Chinese dramatic forms. After each contribution, the editors print a transcript of the conference participants' discussion of that paper, providing the reader with a detailed and nuanced view of how the contributors understood and responded to each other's work

Abstract Understanding a patient’s social determinants of health (SDOH) needs is an important aspect of medical care. To understand better how well future physicians are aware of these needs, student primary care providers (PCP) at a student-led free clinic in the upper southeastern United States surveyed fifteen patients via telemedicine between October 2020 and January 2021 concerning their social determinant of health needs. Seventeen social determinants of health items were addressed using a 10-point Likert scale. Prior to administering the survey to patients, student PCPs were asked to complete the survey to predict each individual patient’s response. The average difference between student and patient response ranged from 1.3 to 3.8 for each SDOH item, and patients expressed a higher need than their PCP students did for health services navigation, health insurance limitations, and education options and affordability. We conclude that even this group of motivated medical students providing continuity care could benefit from a more formal curriculum addressing SDOH.

Abstract A regional medical school dean who is still actively practicing at age 66 considers retirement from clinical practice in the context of his own health risks during the COVID 19 pandemic. Disappointments, truly meaningful clinical interactions, and a vision of buzzards provide a matrix for this personal reflection.

Abstract Background and objectives: The issue of declining empathy and increasing burnout among residents is of concern for most programs. Numerous studies have shown these changes in both medical students and residents. However, the sequence of empathy decline and increasing burnout is unresolved and most studies have been cross sectional. This paper reports an individually-paired longitudinal analysis intended to clarify the sequence of these changes.
Methods: Beginning in 2017, 35 family medicine residents across all 3 years of training at a rural program completed an established empathy survey and a previously-validated single burnout question at the start of each year and at the midpoint. First, the empathy score for each resident was aligned with the next following burnout measure, and then the reverse sequence was followed, with burnout aligned with the following empathy score.
Results: With 125 responses to 133 survey opportunities, we saw a 94% response rate. Empathy scores across residency years decreased slightly and then improved almost to baseline. However, the analysis of variance test for quadratic trend was not significant. The burnout measure increased significantly over the residency years (J-T Statistic=4.89, P<.001). The correlation of the empathy score changing first showed a nonsignificant correlation (Rs=-.150, P=.133). The Spearman's ρ of the burnout measure changing first was significant (Rs=-.300, P=.006).
Conclusions: In this group of residents, changes in burnout occurred before changes in empathy. If further research supports this finding, residency programs could focus more on efforts to address burnout to mitigate decreases in empathy.

Abstract This report summarizes the 20 year evolution of community engagement at a small regional rural campus. The process includes establishing a student directed free clinic and its transition through the wider availability of Medicaid expansion. Next came the transition to telemedicine care during the Covid pandemic and eventually to a recurring pop up mobile clinic at a local homeless shelter. Invitations from the host community then resulted in conducting health screenings at local food banks with portable clinics planned there as well. At each stage we were directed by community steering committees and advisory councils, and we discuss their roles. We found that it is important to go where and when we are invited rather than making these choices based on our convenience. We provide details of student perspectives, planning and finances for those who are considering similar activities.

Abstract As part of a 3-week summer regional medical school campus rural immersion experience, preclinical medical and pre-medical students accompanied a rural Family Medicine residency inpatient team on bedside rounds. One theme of the summer program is the value of empathy and the importance of truly understanding what it is like to “walk a mile in the patient’s shoes.” A previously established brief narrative exercise was modified so that the learner spent an hour facilitating a hospitalized patient’s recall of their life and then produced a short summary that was edited by the patient and then provided to the team. The senior resident chose the patient for the exercise and introduced the student, who remained when the team left the bedside. The response from the patients was uniformly positive, and in an anonymous written evaluation, eight of 11 students completing the project rated it as positive, with 3 neutral, and none negative. Four gave it the highest rating possible in terms of meeting the goals of the program.
