Abstract Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the current status of the quality of life (QOL) of pediatric patients and plasma glucose concentration regulation in children with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region.
Methods: The study involved children with T1DM admitted to the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University between October 2011 and October 2021. The children and their parents completed general information and quality of life (QOL) questionnaires. The regulation of plasma glucose concentration was assessed based on HbA1c levels, and plasma glucose and QOL-influencing components were investigated.
Results: Among the 136 pediatric patients diagnosed with T1DM, the mean glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level was recorded at 8.7% (7.2%, 10.5%). A breakdown of the patient cohort revealed that 44 patients (32.4%) demonstrated good regulation of plasma glucose, 33 patients (24.3%) exhibited acceptable glycemic control, and 59 patients (43.3%) displayed poor regulation of plasma glucose. The control of plasma glucose in pediatric patients diagnosed with T1DM was affected by the duration of the disease, the patient's age, the frequency of daily plasma glucose measurements, the use of CGM, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and the education level of the mother. The control of plasma glucose, dietary management, DKA, the ability to learn, and health education are interfering factors of quality of life in children diagnosed with T1DM. Effective control of plasma glucose may ensure the QOL in children with T1DM, and DKA was the risk factor for QOL.
Conclusion: In Ningxia, the regulation of plasma glucose in pediatric and adolescent patients with T1DM remains suboptimal, leading to poor QOL. There is a pressing need to enhance glucose regulation and QOL through comprehensive strategies, which include reinforced dietary management, rigorous monitoring of plasma glucose levels, and heightened health education levels.

Abstract Pharmacogenomics has been widely used to study the very important pharmacogenetic (VIP) variants among different populations. However, there is little pharmacogenomic information about the Chinese Hui population. Our research aimed to reveal the outstandingly different loci in the Hui population, and provide a theoretical foundation for personalized drug use in the Hui population, so as to facilitate more effective treatment of diseases. This study genotyped 53 VIP variants of 26 genes in 200 independent Hui individuals based on the Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base (PharmGKB). Remarkable differences in the genotype and allele frequencies between the Hui and 26 other populations from the 1000 Genomes Project were assessed using the χ² test. The genotype and allele frequencies of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in PTGS2 (rs20417), NAT2 (rs1801280), NAT2 (rs1208), ACE (rs4291), and CYP2D6 (rs1065852) were considerably different in the Hui population compared with those in the other 26 populations. Besides, using the PharmGKB database, we identified several VIP variants that may alter the drug metabolism of ibuprofen, rofecoxib (PTGS2), captopril (ACE), citalopram, and escitalopram (CYP2D6). We also discovered other variants associated with adverse reactions to cisplatin and cyclophosphamide (NAT2). Our study indicated that the loci of PTGS2 (rs20417), NAT2 (rs1801280 and rs1208), ACE (rs4291), and CYP2D6 (rs1065852) in the Hui population were obviously different from those in the other 26 populations, which provides reliable information for predicting drug efficacy. Besides, it supplements the pharmacogenomic knowledge of the Hui population and lays the foundation for the individualized treatment for the Hui population.

Abstract: ... after treatment with the traditional Chinese medicine compound, Yizhi Sheng Hui (YZSH) decoction. This study ...

Abstract Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) has gradually increased as society has aged and is now a serious social problem. In the clinical treatment of AD, patients show improvement in cognitive function after treatment with the traditional Chinese medicine compound, Yizhi Sheng Hui (YZSH) decoction. This study systematically investigates the effect and pharmacology of the YZSH decoction on AD.
Methods: In this study, 24 SAMP8 AD model mice were randomly divided into three groups: an untreated control group, a group treated with the YZSH decoction, and a positive control group treated with donepezil hydrochloride. Eight SAMR1 mice were placed in the normal control group. A Morris water maze test and a step-down test were conducted at 8 and 13 weeks after continuous intragastric administration of the two drugs. After 13 weeks of administration, the hippocampal expression of Aβ1-42 and tau protein were measured.
Results: There was no change in the latent period duration and the number of platform crossings in each group after 8 weeks of administration, but after 13 weeks of administration, the latent period of the treatment group and the positive control group were significantly shorter than the untreated control group. Initially, the SAMP8 mice showed a lower spatial exploration ability than the SAMR1 mice. However, after 13 weeks of administration, the treatment group and the control group exhibited a better exploration ability. Compared with the SAMR1 mice, the on-stage evasion time and step-down errors significantly increased in the untreated group. Compared with the untreated group, mice in the treatment group and the positive control group showed a shorter latent period after 8 weeks of administration, and the on-stage evasion time for both groups was significantly reduced after 13 weeks of administration. The treatment group showed fewer instances of electric shock. Hippocampal expression of Aβ1-42 was high in the untreated group, was much lower in the positive control group, and no Aβ1-42 expression was observed in the treatment group.
Conclusions: The YZSH decoction improved the learning and memory of mice with AD, related to the inhibition of Aβ1-42 expression.

Abstract: Hui Yang Jiu Ji (HYJJ) decoction has been applied as a prescription of traditional Chinese medicine ...

Abstract Hui Yang Jiu Ji (HYJJ) decoction has been applied as a prescription of traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF). However, its comprehensive molecular mechanism remains unclear now. Our study aimed to explore the possible function and lncRNA-miRNA regulation networks of HYJJ on CHF induced by doxorubicin (DOX) in rats. Our study showed that HYJJ could recover cardiac function and alleviate myocardial injury of DOX-induced CHF. Besides, HYJJ had an effect on restraining myocardial apoptosis in CHF rats. Moreover, RNA-sequencing and bioinformatics analysis indicated that among a total of 548 significantly up- and down-regulated differentially expressed (DE) long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), 511 up- and down-regulated DE miRNAs were identified. Cushing's syndrome and Adrenergic signaling in cardiomyocytes were common pathways between DE-lncRNAs-enriched pathways and DE-miRNAs-enriched pathways. Finally, we observed a new pathway-MSTRG.598.1/Lilrb2 pathway with the HYJJ treatment; however, it needs further studies. In conclusion, this study provided evidence that HYJJ may be a suitable medicine for treating CHF. Moreover, several pivotal miRNAs may serve important roles in these processes by regulating some key miRNAs or pathways in CHF.

Abstract: ... in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (Ningxia), China, the study assessed the contribution of water diversion to N ...

Abstract Water diverted from rivers for irrigation areas often contains large amounts of nitrogen (N), which is frequently overlooked and its role in contributing to N pollution is unknown. To investigate the influence of water diversion on N in different systems within irrigation areas, we developed and optimized the N footprint model, taking into account the N carried by irrigation water diversion and drainage in irrigated areas. This optimized model can serve as a reference for evaluating N pollution in other irrigated areas. By analyzing 29 years (1991-2019) of statistical data from a diverted irrigation area in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (Ningxia), China, the study assessed the contribution of water diversion to N in agriculture, animal husbandry, and human domestic activities. The results demonstrated that water diversion and drainage accounted for 10.3% and 13.8% in whole system, of the total N input and output in Ningxia, highlighting the potential N pollution risks associated with these activities. Additionally, the use of fertilizers in the plant subsystem, feed in the animal subsystem, and sanitary sewage in the human subsystem represented the main sources of N pollution in each subsystem. On a temporal scale, the study found that N loss increased year by year before reaching a stable level, indicating that N loss had reached its peak in Ningxia. The correlation analysis suggested that rainfall could regulate N input and output in irrigated areas by showing a negative correlation with water diversion, agricultural water consumption, and N from irrigated areas. Moreover, the study revealed that the amount of N brought by water diverted from rivers for irrigation should be taken into account when calculating the amount of fertilizer N required in the irrigation area.
