    Abstract Stance detection automatically detects the stance in a text towards a target, vital for content analysis in web and social media research. Despite their promising capabilities, LLMs encounter challenges when directly applied to stance detection. First, stance detection demands multi-aspect knowledge, from deciphering event-related terminologies to understanding the expression styles in social media platforms. Second, stance detection requires advanced reasoning to infer authors' implicit viewpoints, as stance are often subtly embedded rather than overtly stated in the text. To address these challenges, we design a three-stage framework COLA (short for Collaborative rOle-infused LLM-based Agents) in which LLMs are designated distinct roles, creating a collaborative system where each role contributes uniquely. Initially, in the multidimensional text analysis stage, we configure the LLMs to act as a linguistic expert, a domain specialist, and a social media veteran to get a multifaceted analysis of texts, thus overcoming the first challenge. Next, in the reasoning-enhanced debating stage, for each potential stance, we designate a specific LLM-based agent to advocate for it, guiding the LLM to detect logical connections between text features and stance, tackling the second challenge. Finally, in the stance conclusion stage, a final decision maker agent consolidates prior insights to determine the stance. Our approach avoids extra annotated data and model training and is highly usable. We achieve state-of-the-art performance across multiple datasets. Ablation studies validate the effectiveness of each design role in handling stance detection. Further experiments have demonstrated the explainability and the versatility of our approach. Our approach excels in usability, accuracy, effectiveness, explainability and versatility, highlighting its value.

    Abstract Background: The mechanism of peripheral axon transport in neuropathic pain is still unclear. Chemokine ligand 13 (CXCL13) and its receptor (C-X-C chemokine receptor type 5, CXCR5) as well as GABA transporter 1 (GAT-1) play an important role in the development of pain. The aim of this study was to explore the axonal transport of CXCL13/CXCR5 and GAT-1 with the aid of the analgesic effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) in rats.
    Methods: Chronic constriction injury (CCI) rat models were established. BTX-A was administered to rats through subcutaneous injection in the hind paw. The pain behaviors in CCI rats were measured by paw withdrawal threshold and paw withdrawal latencies. The levels of CXCL13/CXCR5 and GAT-1 were measured by western blots.
    Results: The subcutaneous injection of BTX-A relieved the mechanical allodynia and heat hyperalgesia induced by CCI surgery and reversed the overexpression of CXCL13/CXCR5 and GAT-1 in the spinal cord, dorsal root ganglia (DRG), sciatic nerve, and plantar skin in CCI rats. After 10 mmol/L colchicine blocked the axon transport of sciatic nerve, the inhibitory effect of BTX-A disappeared, and the levels of CXCL13/CXCR5 and GAT-1 in the spinal cord and DRG were reduced in CCI rats.
    Conclusions: BTX-A regulated the levels of CXCL13/CXCR5 and GAT-1 in the spine and DRG through axonal transport. Chemokines (such as CXCL13) may be transported from the injury site to the spine or DRG through axonal transport. Axon molecular transport may be a target to enhance pain management in neuropathic pain.

    Abstract The Nordic Sea has a vital impact on the global climate change, occupies a significant status in the physical oceanography research, on account of its intersection of complex ocean currents. To explore the influence of seasonal and spatial heterogeneity in its epipelagic seawater on the microbial community structure, a total of 54 seawater samples from 18 stations and 3 water layers (0 m, 50 m, 100 m) were collected in the summer of 2017 and the autumn of 2018 from the Norwegian Sea, the Greenland Sea and the vicinity of Jan Mayen Island in the Nordic Sea. Alpha- and Beta- diversity analysis showed that significant differences were found between characteristic bacterial groups in detached or mixed currents of corresponding seasons, as endemic OTUs with seasonal and ocean current characteristics which revealed the existence of spatiotemporal patterns of microbial communities in the Nordic Sea. Moreover, co-occurrence networks were conducted to show different degree of complexity and stability of microbial community response to spatiotemporal dynamic changes. Furthermore, the flow and collision between ocean currents do have an impact on the community assembly processes by affecting the migration and dispersal of microbial communities. This study reflects the response of microbial communities to the spatiotemporal dynamics and reveals the microbial community assembly mechanisms under complex hydrological condition represented in the Nordic Sea.

    Abstract As an important element in regulating the tumor microenvironment (TME), integrin plays a key role in tumor progression. This study aimed to establish prognostic signatures to predict the overall survival and identify the immune landscape of patients with lung adenocarcinoma based on integrins. The Cancer Genome Atlas-Lung Adenocarcinoma (TCGA-LUAD) and Gene Expression Omnibus datasets were used to obtain information on mRNA levels and clinical factors (GSE72094). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) model was used to create a prediction model that included six integrin genes. The nomogram, risk score, and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic analysis all revealed that the signatures had a good prognostic value. The gene signatures may be linked to carcinogenesis and TME, according to a gene set enrichment analysis. The immunological and stromal scores were computed using the ESTIMATE algorithm, and the data revealed, the low-risk group had a higher score. We discovered that the B lymphocytes, plasma, CD4+ T, dendritic, and mast cells were much higher in the group with low-risk using the CiberSort. Inflammatory processes and several HLA family genes were upregulated in the low-risk group. The low-risk group with a better prognosis is more sensitive to immune checkpoint inhibitor medication, according to immunophenoscore (IPS) research. We found that the patients in the high-risk group were more susceptible to chemotherapy than other group patients, according to the prophetic algorithm. The gene signatures could accurately predict the prognosis, identify the immune status of patients with lung adenocarcinoma, and provide guidance for therapy.

    Abstract Social network simulation plays a crucial role in addressing various challenges within social science. It offers extensive applications such as state prediction, phenomena explanation, and policy-making support, among others. In this work, we harness the formidable human-like capabilities exhibited by large language models (LLMs) in sensing, reasoning, and behaving, and utilize these qualities to construct the S$^3$ system (short for $\textbf{S}$ocial network $\textbf{S}$imulation $\textbf{S}$ystem). Adhering to the widely employed agent-based simulation paradigm, we employ prompt engineering and prompt tuning techniques to ensure that the agent's behavior closely emulates that of a genuine human within the social network. Specifically, we simulate three pivotal aspects: emotion, attitude, and interaction behaviors. By endowing the agent in the system with the ability to perceive the informational environment and emulate human actions, we observe the emergence of population-level phenomena, including the propagation of information, attitudes, and emotions. We conduct an evaluation encompassing two levels of simulation, employing real-world social network data. Encouragingly, the results demonstrate promising accuracy. This work represents an initial step in the realm of social network simulation empowered by LLM-based agents. We anticipate that our endeavors will serve as a source of inspiration for the development of simulation systems within, but not limited to, social science.

    Abstract Agent-based modeling and simulation has evolved as a powerful tool for modeling complex systems, offering insights into emergent behaviors and interactions among diverse agents. Integrating large language models into agent-based modeling and simulation presents a promising avenue for enhancing simulation capabilities. This paper surveys the landscape of utilizing large language models in agent-based modeling and simulation, examining their challenges and promising future directions. In this survey, since this is an interdisciplinary field, we first introduce the background of agent-based modeling and simulation and large language model-empowered agents. We then discuss the motivation for applying large language models to agent-based simulation and systematically analyze the challenges in environment perception, human alignment, action generation, and evaluation. Most importantly, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent works of large language model-empowered agent-based modeling and simulation in multiple scenarios, which can be divided into four domains: cyber, physical, social, and hybrid, covering simulation of both real-world and virtual environments. Finally, since this area is new and quickly evolving, we discuss the open problems and promising future directions.

    Abstract Recommender systems are playing an increasingly important role in alleviating information overload and supporting users' various needs, e.g., consumption, socialization, and entertainment. However, limited research focuses on how values should be extensively considered in industrial deployments of recommender systems, the ignorance of which can be problematic. To fill this gap, in this paper, we adopt Value Sensitive Design to comprehensively explore how practitioners and users recognize different values of current industrial recommender systems. Based on conceptual and empirical investigations, we focus on five values: recommendation quality, privacy, transparency, fairness, and trustworthiness. We further conduct in-depth qualitative interviews with 20 users and 10 practitioners to delve into their opinions about these values. Our results reveal the existence and sources of tensions between practitioners and users in terms of value interpretation, evaluation, and practice, which provide novel implications for designing more human-centric and value-sensitive recommender systems.
