Abstract Faults in the ball bearing are a major cause of failure in rotating machinery where ball bearings are used. Therefore, there is a growing demand for ball bearing fault diagnosis to prevent failures in rotating machinery. Although studies on the fault diagnosis of bearing have been conducted using temperature measurements and sound monitoring, these methods have limitations, because they are affected by external noise. Therefore, many researchers have studied vibration monitoring for bearing fault diagnosis. Among these, mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have attracted significant attention in vibration monitoring schemes. However, the MFCC in existing studies requires a high sampling rate and an expansive frequency band utilization. In addition, 2D CNNs are highly complex. In this study, a rotational characteristic emphasis (RCE) spectrogram process and an optimized CNN were proposed to solve these problems. The RCE spectrogram process analyzes a narrow frequency band and produces low-resolution images. The optimized CNN was designed with a shallow network structure. The experimental results showed an accuracy of 0.9974 for the proposed system. The optimized CNN model has parameters of 5.81 KB and

Abstract A primary goal of class-incremental learning is to strike a balance between stability and plasticity, where models should be both stable enough to retain knowledge learned from previously seen classes, and plastic enough to learn concepts from new classes. While previous works demonstrate strong performance on class-incremental benchmarks, it is not clear whether their success comes from the models being stable, plastic, or a mixture of both. This paper aims to shed light on how effectively recent class-incremental learning algorithms address the stability-plasticity trade-off. We establish analytical tools that measure the stability and plasticity of feature representations, and employ such tools to investigate models trained with various algorithms on large-scale class-incremental benchmarks. Surprisingly, we find that the majority of class-incremental learning algorithms heavily favor stability over plasticity, to the extent that the feature extractor of a model trained on the initial set of classes is no less effective than that of the final incremental model. Our observations not only inspire two simple algorithms that highlight the importance of feature representation analysis, but also suggest that class-incremental learning approaches, in general, should strive for better feature representation learning.

Also, UV photodetector based on ZnO thin films annealed with the TDA method exhibited faster rise and decay time constant (τr = 35 ms and τd = 73 ms, respectively), a higher on/off current ratio, and reproducible photocurrent characteristics compared to that of the ZnO thin films annealed by using furnace and IR lamp. Therefore, these results indicated that the TDA method is a feasible alternative route for the fabrication of ZnO based high performance optoelectronic devices.

Abstract The synthesis method of transparent and flexible ZnO thin films is currently considered the most important factor for the fabrication of next generation wearable devices. To fabricate transparent and flexible devices by using sol-gel spin-coated ZnO thin films, an annealing step is necessary; however, annealing processes at high temperatures decompose polymer substrates due to their low melting temperature. It was found that sol-gel spin-coated ZnO thin films can be crystallized through the mobility difference of ZnO molecules placed at the surface of ZnO thin films. Especially, ZnO thin films can be annealed at high temperature (above 500 °C) by using a thermal dissipation annealing (TDA) method without the deformation of the polymer substrate. A transparent and flexible ultraviolet photodetector based on ZnO thin films annealed with the TDA method exhibited fast rise and decay time constants, a high on/off current ratio, and reproducible photocurrent characteristics. Thus, these results indicated that the TDA method is a feasible alternative route for the fabrication of next generation wearable devices.

Abstract Abstract Optimal day-ahead scheduling for a system-centric community energy management system (CEMS) is proposed to provide economic benefits and user comfort of energy management at the community level. Our proposed community includes different types of homes and allows prosumers to trade energy locally using mid-market rate (MMR) pricing. A mathematical model of the community is constructed and the optimization problem of this model is transformed into an MILP problem that can be solved in a short time. By solving this MILP problem, the optimization of the overall energy cost of the community and satisfaction of the thermal comfort at every home are achieved. For comparison, we also establish two different CEMSs for the same community: a prosumer-centric CEMS and no CEMS. The simulation results demonstrate that the community with the proposed CEMS has the lowest daily energy cost among three CEMSs. In particular, the community with the proposed CEMS only has $$78\%$$ 78 % of the daily energy cost of the community with the prosumer-centric CEMS. Moreover, by using linear transformation, the computational time of the optimization problem of the proposed system-centric CEMS is only 118.2 s for a 500-home community, which is a short time for day-ahead scheduling of a community. We finally investigate the trade-off of the MMR pricing in the local energy trading of the community, which allows the profits of different types of homes to be flexibly adjusted.

Abstract The fabrication of a transparent and flexible ultraviolet photodetector based on hydrothermally grown ZnO nanorods requires an annealing step to render the sol-gel spin-coated ZnO seed layer crystalline. As high-temperature annealing deforms low-melting-point polymer substrates, we herein devised a thermal dissipation annealing (TDA) method in which heat transfer to ZnO thin films is synchronized with heat release from the polymer substrate to crystallize the ZnO seed layer without polymer substrate deformation and melting. ZnO nanorods (NRs) were hydrothermally grown on non-annealed and annealed ZnO seed layers, and NR density and diameter were shown to be higher in the latter case, as the crystallized ZnO seed layer provided heterogeneous nucleation sites for NR growth. In addition, the larger density and diameter of ZnO NRs grown on the annealed ZnO seed layer were confirmed by analysis of O 1s signal intensities. A transparent and flexible UV photodetector based on ZnO NRs grown on the annealed ZnO seed layer exhibited a higher photocurrent/dark current ratio, photosensitivity, and photoresponsivity than that fabricated using a non-annealed seed layer. Taken together, the above results suggest that the TDA method is an effective way of fabricating transparent and flexible UV photodetectors with high photosensitivity, photoresponsivity, and photocurrent stability and it means that the next generation wearable devices can be easily realized by using the TDA method.

Abstract Human activity recognition (HAR) performs a vital function in various fields, including healthcare, rehabilitation, elder care, and monitoring. Researchers are using mobile sensor data (i.e., accelerometer, gyroscope) by adapting various machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL) networks. The advent of DL has enabled automatic high-level feature extraction, which has been effectively leveraged to optimize the performance of HAR systems. In addition, the application of deep-learning techniques has demonstrated success in sensor-based HAR across diverse domains. In this study, a novel methodology for HAR was introduced, which utilizes convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The proposed approach combines features from multiple convolutional stages to generate a more comprehensive feature representation, and an attention mechanism was incorporated to extract more refined features, further enhancing the accuracy of the model. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of feature combinations from multiple stages as well as in proposing a generalized model structure with CBAM modules. This leads to a more informative and effective feature extraction technique by feeding the model with more information in every block operation. This research used spectrograms of the raw signals instead of extracting hand-crafted features through intricate signal processing techniques. The developed model has been assessed on three datasets, including KU-HAR, UCI-HAR, and WISDM datasets. The experimental findings showed that the classification accuracies of the suggested technique on the KU-HAR, UCI-HAR, and WISDM datasets were 96.86%, 93.48%, and 93.89%, respectively. The other evaluation criteria also demonstrate that the proposed methodology is comprehensive and competent compared to previous works.
