    Abstract Luminescent colloidal silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) are sustainable alternatives to metal-based QDs for various optical applications. While the materials are reliant on their photoluminescence efficiency, the relationship between the structure and photostability of SiQDs is yet to be well studied. An amorphous silicon (a-Si) shell was recently discovered in SiQDs prepared by thermally-processed silicon oxides. As a-Si is known as a source of defects upon UV irradiation, the disordered shell could potentially have an adverse effect on the optical properties of nanoparticles. Herein, the photostability of ∼5 nm diameter SiQDs with an amorphous shell was compared with that of over-etched SiQDs of equivalent dimensions that bore an a-Si shell of negligible thickness. An UV-induced degradation study was conducted by subjecting toluene solutions of SiQDs to 365 nm light-emitting diodes (LEDs) under an inert atmosphere for predetermined times up to 72 hours. The structure, composition, and optical responses of the exposed SiQDs were evaluated.

    Abstract Microplastics are a prolific environmental contaminant. Curbing microplastic pollution requires an array of globally relevant interventions, including source-reduction and curative measures. A novel, nature-based solution to microplastics is proposed, in which mussels are deployed in aquatic ecosystems to act as microplastic biofilters, removing waterborne microplastics and repackaging them into biodeposits that are subsequently captured and removed. Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) were used to establish the feasibility of such an approach.     Abstract AbstractMud blister worms bore into oyster shells; and oysters respond to shell penetration by secreting new layers of shell, resulting in mud blisters on inner surfaces of oyster shells. We conducted two experiments in off-bottom oyster farms along Alabama's coast in summer 2017 to explore the dynamics of worm infestation, blister formation, and shell repair. Results support our hypothesis that only a small proportion of worms that bore into oysters cause blisters. Triploid oysters had fewer blisters than diploids, likely because of faster growth and shell repair. We treated oysters to remove mud blister worms, redeployed them at intertidal and subtidal sites for nine weeks, and found that reinfestation by worms occurred only in subtidal oysters. Intertidally deployed oysters showed no visible blister coverage, indicating recovery, whereas blister coverage increased in subtidal oysters. Reinfestation of subtidal oysters was correlated with previous burrow damage, visualized with X-ray images, thus supporting our hypothesis that worms preferentially settle in previously infested shells. Forces required to break blisters, measured with a custom-built shucking knife with an integrated force sensor, were low relative to forces required to shuck oysters, possibly because our experiment was conducted when worm infestation was increasing. Higher forces were required to break smaller, lighter-colored blisters, consistent with blister recovery; but results were highly variable and not consistent across sites and sampling times, suggesting that size and color of blisters alone did not explain shell strength. Our results indicate that oysters repair shells slowly relative to more dynamic patterns of worm infestation.

    Abstract Microplastics are a prolific environmental contaminant. Curbing microplastic pollution requires an array of globally relevant interventions, including source-reduction and curative measures. A novel, nature-based solution to microplastics is proposed, in which mussels are deployed in aquatic ecosystems to act as microplastic biofilters, removing waterborne microplastics and repackaging them into biodeposits that are subsequently captured and removed. Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) were used to establish the feasibility of such an approach. In the laboratory, mussels were exposed to representative microplastics in a flume tank; at an initial concentration of 1000 microplastics L⁻¹, mussels reduced waterborne microplastic concentrations at an average rate of 40,146 microplastics kg⁻¹ h⁻¹. Mussel faeces sank irrespective of microplastic content, with average sinking velocities of 223-266 m day⁻¹. Modelling predicts ∼3 × 10⁹ mussels deployed on ropes at the mouths of estuaries could remove 4% of waterborne microplastics discharged from rivers. Mussels were successfully deployed in a prototype biodeposit collection system in an urban marina, with 5.0 kg of mussels removing and repackaging 239.9 ± 145.9 microplastics and anthropogenic particles day⁻¹ into their faeces. These results provide impetus for further development of nature-based solutions targeting plastic debris.

Addressing these challenges, nanocontainers based on cyclodextrin amphiphiles that are stabilized by a biodegradable peptide shell are developed and their potential to deliver fluorescently labeled cargo into human cells is analyzed. Host–guest mediated self‐assembly of a thiol‐containing short peptide or a cystamine‐cross‐linked polypeptide shell on cyclodextrin vesicles produce short peptide‐shelled (SPSVss) or polypeptide‐shelled vesicles (PPSVss), respectively, with redox‐responsive and biodegradable features. Whereas SPSVss are permeable and less stable, PPSVss effectively encapsulate cargo and show a strictly regulated release of membrane impermeable cargo triggered by either reducing conditions or peptidase treatment. Live cell experiments reveal that the novel PPSVSS are readily internalized by primary human endothelial cells (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) and cervical cancer cells and that the reductive microenvironment of the cells’ endosomes trigger release of the hydrophilic cargo into the cytosol. Thus, PPSVSS represent a highly efficient, biodegradable, and tunable system for overcoming the plasma membrane as a natural barrier for membrane‐impermeable cargo.

    Abstract Captive hermit crabs (Coenobita spp.) are wild-caught and sold wholesale by commercial distributors. Probiotic products that are marketed for use in captive hermit crabs are commercially available. These products do not disclose the cultures present nor how they may affect hermit crab health. The objectives of this study were to identify culturable organisms present in one such probiotic product and to investigate their interaction in vitro with microbial isolates from the shells and exoskeletons of clinically healthy captive hermit crabs. Samples from two lots of a commercial probiotic product and swabs from seven captive hermit crabs were cultured under aerobic conditions at ambient temperature on standard media. From the resulting colonies, morphologically distinct bacterial cultures were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-tof) mass spectrometry or commercial biochemical analysis. Bacillus pumilus and Bacillus licheniformis were identified from the probiotics via MALDI-tof mass spectrometry. Each shell flora isolate was plated uniformly on blood agar along with B. pumilus and B. licheniformis, respectively. B. pumilus inhibited the growth of other Bacillus species and all Gram-negative species described. This investigation demonstrates that organisms isolated from a commercial probiotic have in vitro inhibitory effects on select shell flora isolated from captive hermit crabs. Commercial probiotics may be useful for the husbandry of captive hermit crabs, but further studies are required to demonstrate clinical efficacy against disease.

    Abstract The mussel Mytilus californianus is a dominant competitor for space on wave-swept rocky shores, where it forms dense beds. Byssal threads anchor each mussel both to the substratum and to neighbors, allowing mussels to resist the onslaught of waves. When incident hydrodynamic stress exceeds a mussel's tenacity, the threads are broken, the mussel is dislodged, and a gap is opened in the bed. Here, we show that when groups of contiguous bed mussels experience similar hydrodynamic forces, they collectively have a lower tenacity than when force is applied to a single individual. Lowered group tenacity leads to greater probabilities of dislodgment, with ramifications for community dynamics and species diversity.

In this study, we evaluate flow and temperature conditions in three areas of the mainstem Delaware River known to consistently support A. heterodon, and we develop predictive models using the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stream gages and thermal stations in order to identify conditions under which habitat alteration could threaten the species. Flow and temperature prediction models based on nearby existing USGS gage and thermal stations were predictive for all three sites. Both discharge prediction and water depth profile models indicate one location (Site 3) was the most vulnerable to low‐flow conditions as it requires the highest discharge rate (26.3 cms) at the USGS Callicoon gage to maintain both the full wetted perimeter (Pfull) and minimal wetted perimeter (Pmin) and prevent occlusion of areas that contain A. heterodon. Flow management targets aimed at protecting Site 3 should also protect Sites 1 and 2. Although analyses indicated significant benthic habitat available in all three sites even under low discharge rates, specific mussel locations could be vulnerable to dewatering and thermal stress if only Pmin values were maintained. Results indicate the magnitude of site temperature deviations from thermal stations varied by site and river temperature. In general, our results suggest that existing temperature and stream gage infrastructure may be used predictively to evaluate the effects of different flow targets on mainstem Delaware River A. heterodon habitat.
