Abstract We examine the risk transmission from the COVID-19 to metal (precious and industrial) and energy markets using the BEKK-MGARCH model. The findings reveal the significant and negative volatility transmission from the COVID-19 to gold, palladium, and brent oil markets, suggesting the safe-haven properties of these markets. The COVID-19 risk is not transmitted to the industrial metal market, whereas the rise in COVID-19 volatility leads to an increase in WTI oil market volatility. These results provide useful insights to investors and policymakers regarding risk management, asset pricing, and financial market stability during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract We examine the connectedness of the COVID vaccination with the economic policy uncertainty, oil, bonds, and sectoral equity markets in the US within time and frequency domain. The wavelet-based findings show the positive impact of COVID vaccination on the oil and sector indices over various frequency scales and periods. The vaccination is evidenced to lead the oil and sectoral equity markets. More specifically, we document strong connectedness of vaccinations with communication services, financials, health care, industrials, information technology (IT) and real estate equity sectors. However, weak interactions exist within the vaccination-IT-services and vaccination-utilities pairs. Moreover, the effect of vaccination on the Treasury bond index is negative, whereas the economic policy uncertainty shows an interchanging lead and lag relation with vaccination. It is further observed that the interrelation between vaccination and the corporate bond index is insignificant. Overall, the impact of vaccination on the sectoral equity markets and economic policy uncertainty is higher than on oil and corporate bond prices. The study offers several important implications for investors, government regulators, and policymakers.

Abstract Objective: To determine the effectiveness of core strengthening exercises and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques on functional performance and balance among patients with hemiplegic stroke.
Methods: The quasi-experimental study was conducted from March to August 2021 at Imran Idrees Hospital, Sialkot, Pakistan, and comprised stroke patients of either gender who were divided into proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation group A and core strengthening group B. In both groups, the treatment was given for 6 weeks with 5 30-minute sessions per week. Functional performance and balance were measured using Barthel Index and Berg Balance Scale. Data were collected at baseline, 3 weeks and 6 weeks. Data was analysed using SPSS 22.
Results: Of the 48 patients, 24(50%) were in each of the 2 groups. There were 39 (81.25%) male and 9(18.75%) female subjects with an overall mean age of 45±4.919 years. Mean Barthel Index score in group A was 62.50±7.22 at baseline and 74.79±7.14 after 6 weeks. Mean Berg Balance Score was 25.04±2.15 at baseline and 41.66±6.04 after 6 weeks (p<0.05). In group B, Barthel Index score was 61.45±6.33 at baseline and 80.83±7.61 after 6 weeks. Mean Berg Balance score was 25.33±3.38 at baseline and 47.08±5.99 after 6 weeks (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in group B scores compared to group A (p<0.01).
Conclusions: Core strengthening programme was more effective than the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation programme in terms of activity of daily living and balance in patients with stroke.

Abstract Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare cholestatic disease characterized by biliary infiltration, hepatic fibrosis and bile duct destruction. To date, treatment options for PSC are very limited. Therefore, the current study is aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of berberine (BBR) against PSC. The disease was induced by feeding the mice with 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydro-2,4,6-collidine (DDC) for four weeks. The serum biochemistry and liver histology were analyzed. Furthermore, the expression of farnesoid X receptor (FXR) was also evaluated by real-time PCR. The results indicated that berberine prevents the progression of PSC by modulating the expression of FXR which ultimately regulates other genes (including Cyp7A1 and BSEP) thus maintaining bile acids homeostasis. Furthermore, the docking analysis showed that berberine interacts with the binding pocket of FXR to activate the protein thus acting as an FXR agonist. In conclusion, data indicate that berberine protects the liver from PSC-related injury. This effect might be due to the modulation of FXR activity.
