    Abstract Systems studied in environmental science, due to their structure and the heterogeneity of the entities composing them, often exhibit complex dynamics that can only be captured by hybrid modeling approaches. While several concurrent definitions of "hybrid modeling" can be found in the literature, it is defined here broadly as the approach consisting in coupling existing modelling paradigms to achieve a more accurate or efficient representation of systems. The need for hybrid models generally arises from the necessity to overcome the limitation of a single modeling technique in terms of structural flexibility, capabilities, or computational efficiency. This book brings together experts in the field of hybrid modelling to demonstrate how this approach can address the challenge of representing the complexity of natural systems.     Abstract Plant-soil negative feedback (NF) is a well-established phenomenon that, by preventing the dominance of a single species, allows species coexistence and promotes the maintenance of biodiversity. At community scale, localized NF may cause the formation of exclusion zones under adult conspecifics leading to Janzen-Connell (JC) distribution. In this study, we explore the connection between adult density, either conspecifics or heterospecifics, on the probability of occurrence of JC distributions. Using an individual-based modelling approach, we simulated the formation of exclusion zones due to the build-up of NF in proximity of conspecific adult plants and assessed the frequency of JC distribution in relation to conspecifics and heterospecifics density ranging from isolated trees to closed forest stands. We found that JC recruitment distribution is very common in the case of an isolated tree when NF was strong and capable to form an exclusion zone under the parent tree. At very low NF intensity, a prevalence of the decreasing pattern was observed because, under such conditions, the inhibitory effect due to the presence of the mother tree was unable to overcome the clustering effect of the seed dispersal kernel. However, if NF is strong the JC frequency suddenly decreases in stands with a continuous conspecific cover likely as a result of progressive expansion of the exclusion zone surrounding all trees in closed forest stands. Finally, our simulations showed that JC distribution should not be frequent in the case of rare species immersed in a matrix of heterospecific adults. Overall, the model shows that a plant suffering from strong NF in monospecific stands can rarely exhibit a recruitment pattern fitting the JC model. Such counterintuitive results would provide the means to reconcile the well-established NF framework with part the forest ecologists' community that is still skeptical towards the JC model.
    Synthesis: Our model highlights the complex interconnection between NF intensity, stand density, and recruitment patterns explaining where and why the JC distribution occurs. Moreover, predicting the occurrence of JC in relation to stand density we clarify the relevance of this ecological phenomenon for future integration in plant community frameworks.

    Abstract Traditional phenological models use chilling and thermal forcing (temperature sum or degree-days) to predict budbreak. Because of the heightening impact of climate and other related biotic or abiotic stressors, a model with greater biological support is needed to better predict budbreak. Here, we present an original mechanistic model based on the physiological processes taking place before and during budbreak of conifers. As a general principle, we assume that phenology is driven by the carbon status of the plant, which is closely related to environmental variables and the annual cycle of dormancy-activity. The carbon balance of a branch was modelled from autumn to winter with cold acclimation and dormancy and from winter to spring when deacclimation and growth resumption occur.     Abstract The integration of photovoltaic technologies within the agricultural framework, known as agrivoltaics, emerges as a promising and sustainable solution to meet the growing global demands for energy and food production. This innovative technology enables the simultaneous utilization of sunlight for both photovoltaics (PV) and photosynthesis. A key challenge in agrivoltaic research involves identifying technologies applicable to a wide range of plant species and diverse geographic regions. To address this challenge, we adopt a multi-experimental and multi-species approach to assess the viability of semi-transparent, spectrally selective thin-film silicon PV technology. Our findings demonstrate compatibility with crop production in controlled environments for both plants and algae. Notably, selective thin-film PV exhibits the potential to enhance crop yields and serves as a photo-protectant. We observe that plant and algal growth increases beneath the selective PV film when supplemented with appropriate diffuse light in the growth environment. Conversely, in situations where light intensity exceeds optimal levels for plant growth, the selective PV film provides a photo-protective effect. These results suggest potential supplementary benefits of employing this technology in regions characterized by excessive light irradiation, where it can contribute to healthy plant growth.

    Abstract Congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) is a rare congenital lung lesion that usually remains asymptomatic during the fetal and neonatal period. However, it can occasionally cause prenatal cardiocirculatory failure and fetal hydrops, requiring a thoraco-amniotic shunt (TAS) placement. In other cases, it can also cause symptoms at birth (such as respiratory distress) and may require urgent surgical intervention. Thoracoscopic lobectomy for neonates is rarely reported. Here, we report a case of right macrocystic CPAM causing fetal hydrops at 27 weeks of gestation. The fetus was treated with a TAS placement that successfully resolved the hydrops. At 39 weeks of gestation, a male neonate was born (weight 2,850 g). The TAS spontaneously displaced during delivery, causing an open pneumothorax (PNX), initially treated with a drainage. His condition gradually worsened, requiring ventilatory support. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed different giant cysts in the context of the right lower lobe, left mediastinal shift, and compression of the rest of the lung. An urgent surgical management was required. A thoracoscopic right lower lobectomy was performed at 10 days of life (weight 2,840 g). The postoperative course was uneventful; the child remained totally asymptomatic and showed a good recovery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of open iatrogenic PNX following TAS positioning and the second of neonatal thoracoscopic lobectomy in a newborn weighting less than 3 kg. The purpose of this report is to indicate that minimally invasive surgery is feasible, safe, and effective for the resection of CPAM, even in small newborns.

    Abstract Introduction: Robotic-assisted upper limb rehabilitation might improve upper limb recovery in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) with moderate-to-severe disability. In the few existing studies, the training effects have been related to the type of intervention, if intensive, repetitive, or task-oriented training might promote neuroplasticity and recovery. Notably, most of these devices operate within a serious game context providing different feedback. Since feedback is a key component of motor control and thus involved in motor and cognitive rehabilitation, clinicians cannot desist from considering the potential contribution of feedback in the upper limb robot-assisted rehabilitation effects.
    Area covered: In this systematic review, we reported the rehabilitation protocols used in the robot-assisted upper limb training in PwMS to provide state-of-the-art on the role of feedback in robotic-assisted Upper Limb rehabilitation. PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database databases were systematically searched from inception to March 2022. After a literature search, the classification systems for feedback and the serious game were applied.
    Expert opinion: There is a need for sharing standard definitions and components of feedback and serious game in technologically assisted upper limb rehabilitation. Indeed, improving these aspects might further improve the effectiveness of such training in the management of PwMS.

    Abstract In recent years, various studies have demonstrated the potential of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals for the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in the rehabilitation of human limbs. This article is a systematic review of the state of the art and opportunities in the development of BCIs for the rehabilitation of upper and lower limbs of the human body. The systematic review was conducted in databases considering using EEG signals, interface proposals to rehabilitate upper/lower limbs using motor intention or movement assistance and utilizing virtual environments in feedback. Studies that did not specify which processing system was used were excluded. Analyses of the design processing or reviews were excluded as well. It was identified that 11 corresponded to applications to rehabilitate upper limbs, six to lower limbs, and one to both. Likewise, six combined visual/auditory feedback, two haptic/visual, and two visual/auditory/haptic. In addition, four had fully immersive virtual reality (VR), three semi-immersive VR, and 11 non-immersive VR. In summary, the studies have demonstrated that using EEG signals, and user feedback offer benefits including cost, effectiveness, better training, user motivation and there is a need to continue developing interfaces that are accessible to users, and that integrate feedback techniques.

    Abstract Background: Degenerative spondylolisthesis is a disease characterized by the displacement of a vertebra above the underlying vertebra. Lumbar arthrodesis is currently the most frequently performed surgical option for treatment due to the use of various approaches and techniques. The disease is characterized by low back pain, a clinical and public health problem, which in addition to having a socio-economic burden, severely affects functional status, quality of life (QoL), activity impairment, and health services. The study aims to investigate the benefits, in terms of pain, disability, andQoL, of lumbar arthrodesis surgery in patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis, at the latest follow-up.
    Methods: A systematic literature review registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022379242), was conducted in the databases of: Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science. The key words used were as follows: "spondylolisthesis", "arthrodesis", "degenerative", "quality of life", "pain", "patient reported outcome", and "disability".
    Results: A total of 26 articles were included. Significant differences were found between the preoperative and postoperative evaluation of the outcomes considered, in particular: pain (MD = -6.74; SD = 2.83; 95% CI: -8.01 to -5.46), low back pain (MD = -3.35; SD = 3.27; 95% CI: -3.61 to -3.10), lower limb pain (MD = -3.81; SD = 3.80; 95% CI: -4.10 to -3.51), disability (MD = -23.75; SD = 19.68; 95% CI: -25.26 to -22.23) and QoL (MD = 0.21; SD = 0.24; 95% CI: 0.19 to 0.23).
    Conclusions: The results show significant improvement in all measured variables, demonstrating that there are different surgical treatments to cure degenerative spondylolisthesis. However, residual pain impacting the QoL remains, regardless of the technique used. Therefore, the development of personalized pain management for patients with residual chronic pain is indicated.
