Abstract China has been investing heavily in biotechnology to increase agricultural productivity. While a number of Chinese developed GM crops have cleared the required scientific hurdles - some more than a decade ago - commercialization has not been approved. The regulatory regime for GMOs in China is relatively less well understood than that of the US or the EU. This paper provides a systematic overview of China's regulatory regime, R&D investment and delayed commercialization decisions on biotechnology over the last 40 years and draws some conclusions regarding the likelihood of the commercialization for major GM crops in the future.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) initiated shocks to the Canadian agri‐food industry moving the sector away from its prepandemic equilibrium. Disequilibrium can mean, postshock, that sectors follow different paths of adjustment. The public and politicians appear to desire that economic activity returns to prepandemic norms—but this is far from assured. In the case of the Canadian agri‐food industry, the postshock path of adjustment appears to be returning to the preshock equilibrium, or near to it. This provides a familiar and stable anchor for those whose lives are otherwise considerably disrupted by the pandemic. The multilateral international trade system has long been in need of reform—reforms that would benefit Canada's agri‐food exporting sector. The pandemic has raised trade issues that require urgent action and some countries see this as an opportunity for reform. Canada has been at the forefront of this activity through the fostering, hosting, and chairing of the Ottawa Group of 13 World Trade Organization members that have been charged with bringing forward proposals for reform that will break the log jam in multilateral negotiations. The work of the Ottawa Group is examined and the likelihood of the initiative succeeding assessed.

Abstract Okara, the solid byproduct of soymilk production, poses a sustainability concern, despite being rich in fiber and other healthful compounds. In this study, the physical properties of tofu made from soymilk fortified with differing levels of okara-either whole or fine (<180 µm)-and made with the traditional coagulant nigari were examined. The yield increased linearly with the okara concentration with values of 18.2-29.5% compared to 14.5% for the control. The initial moisture in the fortified samples was higher than the control (79.69-82.78% versus 76.78%), and both the expressible moisture and total moisture after compression were also greater in the fortified samples. With a few exceptions, the texture parameters did not differ between samples. Dynamic rheology showed that all samples had G' > G″. The storage moduli increased at different rates during each gelling step, with G' before and after gelling increasing with the fortification level, and was greater for the samples with fine particles than with whole particles. Consumer sensory panels using the hedonic scale showed traditional tofu had a slightly higher acceptability, but the panelists indicated they would be more willing to purchase okara-fortified tofu because of the health and sustainability benefits it might have. Thus, tofu could be produced with added okara with predictable but not profound changes in its physical properties.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the sedative effects of a combination of sufentanil and midazolam administered intramuscularly (IM) or intranasally (IN) prior to induction of anesthesia with propofol in New Zealand White rabbits.
Study design: Prospective, randomized, crossover, experimental study.
Animals: A total of 11 adult New Zealand White rabbits.
    Methods: Sufentanil (0.5 μg kg
Results: Measured variables remained within normal physiologic ranges for all rabbits. The only statistically significant change was for f
Conclusions and clinical relevance: Sufentanil combined with midazolam administered either IM or IN resulted in moderate to deep sedation in New Zealand White rabbits at the dose rates studied.
