Abstract Ba-wei-xi-lei powder is a classical herbal mixture, and is widely used for the treatment of oral ulcer and ulcerative colitis. This study aimed to explore the effect of Ba-wei-xi-lei powder with enema application on ulcerative colitis in rats. Ulcerative colitis was induced by immunization with rabbit's colonic mucosal protein emulsified with Completely Freund's Adjuvant. The mucosal inflammatory reaction and ulcer have been observed in the model rats. Characteristic changes of ulceractive colitis include that CD4 lymphocyte increased in peripheral blood while CD8 lymphocyte decreased; CD8 lymphocyte and TNF-alpha expression area increased in colonic mucosa, while CD4 lymphocyte decreased. Ba-wei-xi-lei powder and sulfasalazine with enema application could alleviate the pathological changes in the model rats. The results suggest that the pharmacological effects of Ba-wei-xi-lei powder on ulcerative colitis in rats are similar to the effect of sulfasalazine.

Abstract Summary: Plans for decarbonized electricity systems rely on projections of highly uncertain future technology costs. We use a stylized model to investigate the influence of future cost uncertainty, as represented by different projections in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory 2021 Annual Technology Baseline dataset, on technology mixes comprising least-cost decarbonized electricity systems. Our analysis shows that given the level of future cost uncertainty as represented by these projections, it is not possible to predict with confidence which technologies will play a dominant role in future least-cost carbon emission–free energy systems. Successful efforts to reduce costs of individual technologies may or may not lead to system cost reductions and widespread deployments, depending on the success of cost-reduction efforts for competing and complementary technologies. These results suggest a portfolio approach to reducing technology costs. Reliance on uncertain cost breakthroughs risks costly outcomes. Iterative decision-making with learning can help mitigate these risks.

Abstract When performing indoor tasks, miniature swarm robots are suffered from their small size, poor on-board computing power, and electromagnetic shielding of buildings, which means that some traditional localization methods, such as global positioning system (GPS), simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and ultra-wideband (UWB), cannot be employed. In this paper, a minimalist indoor self-localization approach for swarm robots is proposed based on active optical beacons. A robotic navigator is introduced into a swarm of robots to provide locally localization services by actively projecting a customized optical beacon on the indoor ceiling, which contains the origin and the reference direction of localization coordinates. The swarm robots observe the optical beacon on the ceiling via a bottom-up-view monocular camera, and extract the beacon information on-board to localize their positions and headings. The uniqueness of this strategy is that it uses the flat, smooth, and well-reflective ceiling in the indoor environment as a ubiquitous plane for displaying the optical beacon; meanwhile, the bottom-up view of swarm robots is not easily blocked. Real robotic experiments are conducted to validate and analyze the localization performance of the proposed minimalist self-localization approach. The results show that our approach is feasible and effective, and can meet the needs of swarm robots to coordinate their motion. Specifically, for the stationary robots, the average position error and heading error are 2.41 cm and 1.44°; when the robots are moving, the average position error and heading error are less than 2.40 cm and 2.66°.
