    Abstract Background: Previous studies showed that caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disorders had higher levels of parenting stress, anxiety and depression. In the present study, the author examined the caregivers' mental health and investigated the mediating role of social support between symptoms severity and parenting stress during COVID-19.
    Methods: During 20 March to 8 April 2020, 1932 caregivers of children and adolescents with ASD and other developmental disorders from China were enrolled to fill in a sociodemographic questionnaire, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale and Social Support Rating Scale. The author also collected children's disability severity symptoms and behavioral problems.
    Results: The results showed that 46.01% of the caregivers reported symptoms of depression, 44.67% showed anxiety and 44.62% showed stress during COVID-19 pandemic. Fathers were found to get more subjective support than mothers (
    Limitations: This study has some limitations, such as it did not conduct the longitudinal analysis of variables before COVID-19.
    Conclusions: The findings showed that many caregivers experienced mental health problems during COVID-19. The author suggested to promote caregivers' engagement in functional social support and the behavioral interventions for their children to reduce the impact of stress, anxiety and depression.

    Abstract Instruction in auditory-visual conditional discriminations for young children with autism spectrum disorder is typically based on either a conditional-only or a simple-conditional method. In this study, we evaluated a modified simple-conditional method in which we removed the steps for which visual comparisons were presented in isolation. We compared this modified simple-conditional method with the conditional-only method when teaching auditory-visual conditional discriminations to six young Chinese children with autism spectrum disorder. We included two efficiency measures: total sessions and time to mastery. Our results replicated the findings of previous research in that both methods were efficacious for all but one participant. Although efficacy outcomes were similar across methods, the conditional-only method was more efficient across participants according to sessions and time to mastery. Thus, the results add to support for the use of the conditional-only method to teach auditory-visual conditional discriminations.

    Abstract Finding stable and bioavailable calcium supplements is crucial for addressing calcium deficiency. In this study, glycated peptide-calcium chelates (WMPHs-COS-Ca) were prepared from walnut meal protein hydrolysates (WMPHs) and chitosan oligosaccharides (COSs) through the Maillard reaction, and the structural properties and stability of the WMPHs-COS-Ca were characterized. The results showed that WMPHs and COSs exhibited high binding affinities, with a glycation degree of 64.82%. After glycation, Asp, Lys, and Arg decreased by 2.07%, 0.46%, and 1.06%, respectively, which indicated that these three amino acids are involved in the Maillard reaction. In addition, compared with the WMPHs, the emulsifying ability and emulsion stability of the WMPHs-COS increased by 10.16 mg

    Abstract COVID-19 had become a pandemic raising concerns of widespread panic and increasing anxiety and stress in individuals all over the world (World Health Organization, 2020a). Lots of countries had closed their schools. As the first country to do so, Chinese colleges and universities were making use of different modes of learning, including online-learning based on different platforms to achieve the goal suggested by Ministry of Education in China, “suspending classes without suspending learning,” since middle February. This paper is the first one which aims to investigate the anxiety of Chinese university students after the outbreak of COVID-19 right before the start of new spring term. 3611 university students (female: male = 1.48:1) aged between 18 to 24 from all over China were enrolled to this study from a top university in China. The Self-Rating Anxiety Scale – SAS (Zung, 1971) was used to assess anxiety 2 days before the start of new spring term in middle February. All four-year undergraduate students were included in the study. The mean SAS score was 40.53 (SD = 10.15), significantly higher than the national norm (Mean = 29.78, SD = 10.07, and p ≤ .001), and there were still 557 (15.43%, Mean = 58.75, and SD = 8.9) students met the cutoff of 50 and were screened positive. Comparisons among sexes, grades and majors were also conducted. Significant differences were found between all males and all female (p ≤ .001), and between all students majoring arts and sciences in the anxiety sample (n = 557, p = 0.05). The results also showed that the mean SAS scores were not correlated with the regions they came from/lived in. This study concluded that the Chinese university students showed higher anxiety for COVID-19.

    Abstract In this study, we examined the effects of various sodium alginate (ALG) concentrations (0.2%-0.8%) on the functional and physicochemical characteristics of succinylated walnut glutenin (GLU-SA). The results showed that acylation decreased the particle size and zeta potential of walnut glutenin (GLU) by 122- and 0.27-fold, respectively. In addition, the protein structure unfolded, providing conditions for glycosylation. After GLU-SA was combined with ALG, the surface hydrophobicity decreased and the net negative charge and disulfide bond content increased. The protein structure was analyzed by FTIR, Endogenous fluorescence spectroscopy, and SEM, and ALG prompted GLU-SA cross-linking to form a stable three-dimensional network structure. The results indicated that dual modification improved the functional properties of the complex, especially its potential protein gel and emulsifying properties. This research provide theoretical support and a technical reference for expanding the application of GLU in the processing of protein and oil products.
