    Abstract Diabetic retinopathy has a high probability of causing visual impairment or blindness throughout the disease progression and is characterized by the growth of new blood vessels in the retina at an advanced, proliferative stage. Microglia are a resident immune population in the central nervous system, known to play a crucial role in regulating retinal angiogenesis in both physiological and pathological conditions, including diabetic retinopathy. Physiologically, they are located close to blood vessels and are essential for forming new blood vessels (neovascularization). In diabetic retinopathy, microglia become widely activated, showing a distinct polarization phenotype that leads to their accumulation around neovascular tufts. These activated microglia induce pathogenic angiogenesis through the secretion of various angiogenic factors and by regulating the status of endothelial cells. Interestingly, some subtypes of microglia simultaneously promote the regression of neovascularization tufts and normal angiogenesis in neovascularization lesions. Modulating the state of microglial activation to ameliorate neovascularization thus appears as a promising potential therapeutic approach for managing diabetic retinopathy.

    Title translation Exercise-Based Prehabilitation In Orthopaedics, Cardiology And Oncology.
    Abstract Prehabilitation (prehab) aims to prepare patients for surgery, to reduce perioperative complications and to improve postoperative recovery. Pre-operative interventions depend on the indication and the specific patient characteristics and life circumstances. In orthopaedics, the focus is on preoperative improvement of physical performance, function and muscle strength through specific strength, mobility and sensomotoric training. In cardiology, endurance training and respiratory therapy are used in the preoperative phase, as well as coordination and strengthening exercises and occupational therapy to improve physical fitness and performance and reduce cardiovascular risk factors. In oncology, prehab is used preoperatively and also in addition to chemotherapy or radiotherapy to reduce medical side effects and to increase tolerance to cancer therapies (e. g. surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy). Exercise interventions in oncology differ according to the type of cancer (e. g. combined strength and endurance training, respiratory therapy, high-intensity interval training and walking). Study results often show positive effects on health resources using prehab. However, further high-quality clinical intervention studies are needed to confirm the clinical benefits of prehab for implementation in routine care.

    Abstract Archambault et al. veröffentlichten 2014 einen Report, der die Open-Access-(OA)-Raten für Publikationen der Jahre 2008–2013 aus allen Ländern des Europäischen Forschungsraums (ERA) sowie für Brasilien, Kanada, Japan und die USA enthält. Unterschieden wird dabei nicht nur nach Disziplinen, sondern auch nach drei OA-Kategorien: Gold, Grün und einer Restkategorie. Einige wichtige Ergebnisse der Studie werden zusammengefasst und die Daten für Österreich mit jenen des untersuchten Gesamtraums verglichen. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass Österreich in fast allen Disziplinen überdurchschnittlich hohe OA-Raten aufweist. Der Fachbereich „Philosophy & Theology“ bildet dabei jedoch eine Ausnahme. Außerdem scheint das Zugänglichmachen über Soziale Netzwerke und persönliche Homepages in fast allen Fachbereichen beliebter zu sein als der Goldene oder der Grüne Weg. Das gilt insbesondere für die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften. Die Daten der Study of Open Access Publishing (SOAP) lassen darauf schließen, dass es OA-Journals in diesen Disziplinen noch an Reputation mangelt.

    Abstract Pediatric neurocritical care requires multidisciplinary expertise for the care of critically ill children. Approximately 14-16% of critically ill children in pediatric intensive care suffer from a primary neurological disease, whereby cardiac arrest and severe traumatic brain injury play major roles in Europe. The short-term goal of interventions in the pediatric intensive care unit is to stabilize vital functions, whereas the overarching goal is to achieve survival without neurological damage that enables fulfillment of the individual developmental physiological potential. For this reason, evidence-based methods for brain monitoring during the acute phase and recovery are necessary, which can be performed clinically or with technical devices. This applies to critically ill children with primary neurological diseases and for all children at risk for secondary neurological insults. Patients with diseases of the peripheral nervous system are also treated in pediatric intensive care medicine. In these patients, the primary aim frequently consists of bridging the time until recovery after acute deterioration, for example during an infection. In these patients, monitoring the cerebral function can be especially challenging, because due to the underlying disease the results of the examination cannot be interpreted in the same way as for previously neurologically healthy children. This article summarizes the complexity of pediatric neurocritical care by presenting examples of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the context of various neurological diseases that can be routinely encountered in the pediatric intensive care unit and can only be successfully treated by multidisciplinary teams.

    Abstract Das Dialogforum, koordiniert vom Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) in Partnerschaft mit dem Thünen-Institut, lief von September 2019 bis Dezember 2022. Es hatte zum Ziel, die Reduzierung von Lebensmittelabfällen zu monitoren, relevante Ziele bis 2030 festzulegen, geeignete Formate zur Umsetzung und zum Monitoring zu entwickeln und diese in Form einer sogenannten Zielvereinbarung zu vereinbaren. 18 Unternehmen aus dem Lebensmitteleinzelhandel und sechs aus dem Lebensmittelgroßhandel haben mit der Unterzeichnung einer Beteiligungserklärung am Dialogforum für die Jahre 2019 bis 2022 ihre Bereitschaft zur entsprechenden Zusammenarbeit unterstrichen und sich im Dialogforum aktiv an der Erreichung der gesetzten Ziele beteiligt. Das Engagement der 23 teilnehmenden Unternehmen im Dialogforum in Kürze: − Jedes der 23 Unternehmen arbeitet mit Lebensmittelbanken, foodsharing oder lokalen Organisationen zusammen, um Lebensmittel, die noch genießbar sind, weiterzugeben. Darüber hinaus wurden 52 Maßnahmen ergriffen, um die Weitergabe zu verbessern. − Um die Qualität der Daten über Lebensmittelabfälle zu verbessern, haben alle teilnehmenden Unternehmen im Rahmen ihres Engagements im Dialogforum intern entsprechende Informationen gesammelt. Darüber hinaus haben 22 der Unternehmen ihre eigenen Daten in Form von Abschreibungen für 2019 und 2020 zur Verfügung gestellt. − Vier Unternehmen haben zudem mit dem Thünen-Institut zusammengearbeitet, um Erkenntnisse über das theoretische Potenzial für einen weiteren Ausbau der Zusammenarbeit bei der Lebensmittelweitergabe zu gewinnen. − Die teilnehmenden Unternehmen haben weit mehr als die geforderten mindestens vier Wahlmaßnahmen aus drei Kategorien umgesetzt. So setzten die 23 Unternehmen zwischen September 2019 und April 2022 insgesamt 88 Maßnahmen intern, 62 Maßnahmen an den Schnittstellen zu Lieferanten und 52 Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der Lebensmittelweitergabe um. To gain insights into the functions of selected RNA interactors, we applied genetic perturbation and pharmacological inhibition experiments, and mapped the contact sites on the viral RNA. This led to the identification of host dependency factors and defense strategies, which can guide the design of novel therapeutics against SARS-CoV-2.
