Abstract Ecclesiastical institutions and actors were essential for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. However, both legal historiography, due to its strong legalistic, state-centred imprint, and general historiography on colonial times, more inclined towards secular law, have only rarely discussed the contribution of ecclesiastical normativity to the formation of that normative texture which, in the historiographical tradition, has been called 'derecho indiano'.In light of this situation, the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History has organised a series of seminars in different Latin American cities in order to offer an interdisciplinary forum dedicated to the research of 'ecclesiastical normativities and institutions in Ibero-America' between the 16th and 19th centuries.-

The present volume is the first in a series of publications that document the results of this cycle of seminars celebrated in Mexico City, Lima, Bogotá and São Paulo. The book, focusing on New Spain, is divided into five thematic parts. The first section presents investigations on canon law and moral theology that deal with characteristic aspects of multinormativity and the teaching of those disciplines in early modern times. The second section examines diocesan governance and ecclesiastical power in Mexico City and Puebla via statutes of the cathedral chapter, members of the 'curia arzobispal' and pertinent legal opinions. In the third section, the contributors reflect on the normativity and administration of sacraments, drawing on conciliar norms, treatises, pragmatic literature but as well on registers of baptisms and confessions.-

The fourth section deals with ethnic groups in courts of justice, both civil and ecclesiastic ones: indigenous people accused of 'hechicería' in a tribunal of Tlaxcala and Afro-Mexicans who started litigation in the archiepiscopal court of Mexico. The articles of the fifth section cover the topics of beatification, devotion and cultural expressions (music, images) from a normative perspective and extend the period of investigation to the 19th century. The articles on ecclesiastical institutions and normativities in New Spain collected in this volume propose new research fields for legal history and the history of the Church, which at the same time are relevant for social and cultural history. The editors' purpose has been to present approaches that explore the relationship between different types of normativities, their local adaptations, the ties with global debates, the forms of solving conflicts, as well as the role of jurists, theologians and other actors.-

Abstract This review focuses on the fictional literature in which the Spanish flu is represented either as an anecdotal or as a historical aspect and the effect on the author or fictional character. We examine this sociocultural period in the press and mainly in Anglo-Saxon literary works and from other countries, including Spanish and Latin American literature that is not very represented in some international reviews on the subject. Also, we include books about the previous and subsequent influenza pandemics to the Spanish flu.

Abstract We describe the infections that appeared in the life and work of John Donne (1572-1631), the English metaphysical poet, mainly the exanthematic typhus that suffered and gave arise to his work Devotions upon emergent occasions, and several steps in my sickness. We discuss the vector of transmission of this disease, in comparison of other infections in that period, that Donne´s scholars have related to the flea without mentioning the body louse, the true vector of the exanthematic typhus. Likewise, we mention the exanthematic typhus´s symptoms in his Devotions in comparison with the Luis de Toro´s or Alfonso López de Corella´s works, Spanish doctors in those times and the first doctors in write books about the disease, and the singular treatment of pigeon carcasses on the soles of the feet in English Doctors but not in Spanish Doctors.

Abstract Placentas from gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients undergo significant metabolic and immunologic adaptations due to hyperglycemia, which results in an exacerbated synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines and an increased risk for infections. Insulin or metformin are clinically indicated for the treatment of GDM; however, there is limited information about the immunomodulatory activity of these drugs in the human placenta, especially in the context of maternal infections. Our objective was to study the role of insulin and metformin in the placental inflammatory response and innate defense against common etiopathological agents of pregnancy bacterial infections, such as E. coli and S. agalactiae , in a hyperglycemic environment. Term placental explants were cultivated with glucose (10 and 50 mM), insulin (50–500 nM) or metformin (125–500 µM) for 48 h, and then they were challenged with live bacteria (1 × 10 5 CFU/mL). We evaluated the inflammatory cytokine secretion, beta defensins production, bacterial count and bacterial tissue invasiveness after 4–8 h of infection. Our results showed that a GDM-associated hyperglycemic environment induced an inflammatory response and a decreased beta defensins synthesis unable to restrain bacterial infection. Notably, both insulin and metformin exerted anti-inflammatory effects under hyperglycemic infectious and non-infectious scenarios. Moreover, both drugs fortified placental barrier defenses, resulting in reduced E. coli counts, as well as decreased S. agalactiae and E. coli invasiveness of placental villous trees. Remarkably, the double challenge of high glucose and infection provoked a pathogen-specific attenuated placental inflammatory response in the hyperglycemic condition, mainly denoted by reduced TNF-α and IL-6 secretion after S. agalactiae infection and by IL-1β after E. coli infection. Altogether, these results suggest that metabolically uncontrolled GDM mothers develop diverse immune placental alterations, which may help to explain their increased ...

Title translation An historical, sociocultural view and in the fiction literature of Bacillus anthracis cases by shaving brushes.
Abstract In the period from 1915 to 1924 anthrax outbreaks were described by Bacillus anthracis due to the contamination of razor brushes that reached Europe and the United States from areas such as Japan, China or Russia. The brushes were made with badger hair, and then, to reduce the cost with horse hair and other animals. World War I supoosed that the traffics of these brushes, that passed through Europe, changed and the processes of sterilization of the same were deficient giving rise to these outbreaks, that in a percentage of 20% produced the death of the users. The impact of the fashion of wearing a beard, the presence of these cases in the press, in the society of that period, and literature are studied through the work of Agatha Christie who wrote, in 1936, the Hercules Poirot´s novel Cards on the table, and where she describes the murder of one of the characters with the shaving brush contaminated with Bacillus anthracis spores.

Abstract Pleural effusion is an extremely rare complication of ruptured breast silicone implants. Rupture may be related to a recent trauma or occur spontaneously, making its diagnosis more difficult. In the few reported cases, cytology did not play a relevant role in its diagnosis. We describe and illustrate a silicone foreign body reaction in a pleural effusion. Cytologic findings were so remarkable as to permit a specific diagnosis. The patient, a 37-year-old female with a history of previous bilateral breast implant surgery was admitted because of a pleural effusion. Computed tomography scan showed a left effusion with secondary atelectasis and bilateral breast rupture with lymph node "siliconomas." Cytologic analysis of the effusion showed well-defined droplets or globules of transparent material, in addition to a microvacuolized background. Where abundant silicone droplets induced a staining artifact of the smears. These were cellular with numerous macrophages containing large vacuoles displacing the nuclei to the periphery. Some had a signet cell ring appearance, while others showed multinucleation. Flow cytometry revealed a predominant macrophagic cell population. With the increasing use of silicone breast implants, rare complications such as pleural effusion may become more common. The pathologist must consider this possibility when extracellular transparent droplets or evidence of a foreign body-type reaction are present. The artifact appearance of the smears may help to suspect it. This rare complication must be always considered when evaluating effusions in patients with silicone breast implants.

Abstract Despite the excellent beneficial properties that anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds give to the red onion bulbs, few articles have investigated modern extraction techniques or experimental designs in this field. For this reason, the present study proposes the development and optimization of alternative methods for the extraction of these compounds based on microwave-assisted extraction and the Box-Behnken experiment design. The optimal values for the extraction of total anthocyanins have been established at 62% methanol composition as a solvent, pH 2, 56 °C temperature, and 0.2:13 g:mL sample-solvent ratio. Regarding the extraction of total phenolic compounds, the optimal conditions have been established at 100% pure methanol as a solvent with pH 2, 57 °C temperature, and 0.2:8.8 g:mL sample-solvent ratio. Short extraction times (min), good recoveries (mg of bioactive compound g

Abstract The changes of capsaicinoids in the pericarp and placenta of Jeromin pepper fruits, collected at two different stages of plant's maturity (young and adult), has been studied throughout the ripening process. This variety is used in the production of "Pimentón de La Vera" and recognized under a Protected Designation of Origin, so it is of great importance to determine their optimum harvesting time to get the most of its beneficial health effects. Capsaicinoids reached the maximum concentration on the 30th days post-anthesis (dpa) for the young plant, while in the adult plant it was later, specifically on 40th and 60th dpa for the placenta and pericarp, respectively. From this moment on, a sharp decrease in their content is observed. In addition, higher amounts of total capsaicinoids have been found in the second stage of plant maturity with respect to the first one, both in the placenta and in the pericarp.
