Abstract Exploring the post-injury lives of those who have survived gunshot wounds is essential to understanding the entire scope of firearm violence. The lives of Black male firearm violence survivors are transformed in various ways due to their injuries both visible and invisible. This study explored how Black men who suffer from disabilities via a firearm negotiated their masculine identities. Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 violently injured Black men participating in a hospital-based violence intervention program. Survivors expressed their thoughts on how their injuries impacted their manhood and masculinities. Three themes emerged: (1) perceptions of manhood, (2) loss of independence and burden on others, and (3) and mobility. These themes highlighted and described how their lives were impacted post-injury and characterized their psychological and physical experience of recovery. The research findings suggest the need for more qualitative studies to further explore the relationship between firearm injury, Black masculinity, and perceptions of manhood. While Black men are understudied in health research and invisible in disability research, they continue to be hyper-invisible when discussing violently acquired disabilities.

Abstract Many coastal ecosystems, including those of the Laurentian Great Lakes, suffer from various natural and anthropogenic stressors. Given that multiple stressors often concomitantly impact ecosystems, it may be difficult to disentangle which stressors are most influential. Upper trophic level communities, such as fish assemblages, can provide insights to the influence of diverse stressors as they may integrate cumulative effects over the long-term and also reflect responses of lower trophic levels. We used multivariate analyses and assemblage indices to investigate long-term (1984–2016) patterns in a nearshore fish assemblage indexed via annual trawling in the Indiana waters of southern Lake Michigan. Based on observations from other regions of the Great Lakes, we expected that oligotrophication, due to reduced nutrient loading and filtering by invasive mussels, would have a strong influence on the fish assemblage. However, we were unsure if the very nearshore fish assemblage would track observed decreased production patterns in offshore Lake Michigan or if observed increased primary production in the very nearshore would affect the fish assemblage. Consistent with the former expectation, overall abundance and richness of the assemblage declined over time. However, contrary to observations in other regions there was no overall evidence of species tolerant to more eutrophic conditions being replaced by more sensitive species. Moreover, there was limited evidence of the fish assemblage shifting towards species more tolerant of warm water, as might be expected with climate change. While increased numbers of invasive species added species to the system, overall species richness and native species richness declined.

Abstract Schizophrenia (SZ) is a serious mental illness and neuropsychiatric brain disorder with behavioral symptoms that include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized behavior, and cognitive impairment. Regulation of such behaviors requires utilization of neurotransmitters released to mediate cell-cell communication which are essential to brain functions in health and disease. We hypothesized that SZ may involve dysregulation of neurotransmitters secreted from neurons. To gain an understanding of human SZ, induced neurons (iNs) were derived from SZ patients and healthy control subjects to investigate peptide neurotransmitters, known as neuropeptides, which represent the major class of transmitters. The iNs were subjected to depolarization by high KCl in the culture medium and the secreted neuropeptides were identified and quantitated by nano-LC-MS/MS tandem mass spectrometry. Several neuropeptides were identified from schizophrenia patient-derived neurons, including chromogranin B (CHGB), neurotensin, and natriuretic peptide. Focusing on the main secreted CHGB neuropeptides, results revealed differences in SZ iNs compared to control iN neurons. Lower numbers of distinct CHGB peptides were found in the SZ secretion media compared to controls. Mapping of the peptides to the CHGB precursor revealed peptides unique to either SZ or control, and peptides common to both conditions. Also, the iNs secreted neuropeptides under both KCl and basal (no KCl) conditions. These findings are consistent with reports that chromogranin B levels are reduced in the cerebrospinal fluid and specific brain regions of SZ patients. These findings suggest that iNs derived from SZ patients can model the decreased CHGB neuropeptides observed in human SZ.

Abstract Background: An analysis of the position statements of secular US medical and surgical professional societies on physician-assisted suicide (PAS) and euthanasia have not been published recently. Available statements were evaluated for position, content, and sentiment.
Methods: In order to create a comprehensive list of secular medical and surgical societies, the results of a systematic search using Google were cross-referenced with a list of societies that have a seat on the American Medical Association House of Delegates. Societies with position statements were identified. These statements were divided into 5 categories: opposed to PAS and/or euthanasia, studied neutrality, supportive, acknowledgement without statement, and no statement. Linguistic analysis was performed using RapidMinder in order to determine word frequency and sentiment respective to individual statements. To ensure accuracy, only statements with word counts > 100 were analyzed. A 2-tailed independent t test was used to test for variance among sentiment scores of opposing and studied neutrality statements.
Results: Of 150 societies, only 12 (8%) have position statements on PAS and euthanasia: 11 for PAS (5 opposing and 4 studied neutrality) and 9 for euthanasia (6 opposing and 2 studied neutrality). Although the most popular words used in opposing and studied neutrality statements are similar, notable exceptions exist (suicide, medicine, and treatment appear frequently in opposing statements, but not in studied neutrality statements, whereas psychologists, law, and individuals appear frequently in studied neutrality statements, but not in opposing statements). Sentiment scores for opposing and studied neutrality statements do not differ (mean, 0.094 vs. 0.104; P = 0.90).
Conclusions: Few US medical and surgical societies have position statements on PAS and euthanasia. Among them, opposing and studied neutrality statements share similar linguistic sentiment. Opposing and studied neutrality statements have clear differences, but share recommendations. Both opposing and studied neutrality statements cite potential risks of PAS legalization and suggest that good palliative care might diminish a patient's desire for PAS.

Title translation Thulium or holmium laser or both: where will the journey take us?
Abstract The Holmium:YAG laser has been the gold standard for laser lithotripsy over the past three decades and, since the late 1990s, also for prostate enucleation. Pulsed thulium fibre lasers (TFL) demonstrated their efficacy in in-vitro experiments and were introduced to the market a few years ago. Initial clinical results for TFL in lithotripsy and enucleation are very promising. In addition to TFL, a pulsed Thulium:YAG solid-state laser has been introduced, but clinical data for this laser are currently limited. This article aims to review the key technological differences between Ho:YAG lasers and pulsed thulium lasers and compare/discuss the initial clinical results for stone lithotripsy and laser enucleation.In-vitro studies have demonstrated the technical superiority of TFL compared with Ho:YAG lasers. However, as TFL is still a new technology, only limited studies are available to date, and optimal settings for lithotripsy have not been established. For enucleation, the differences of TFL compared with a high-power Ho:YAG laser seem to be clinically irrelevant. Initial studies on pulsed Tm:YAG lasers show good results, but there continues to be a lack of comparative studies.Based on the current literature, pulsed thulium lasers have the potential of being an alternative to Ho:YAG lasers. However, further studies are necessary to determine the optimal laser technology for enucleation and lithotripsy of urinary stones, considering all parameters, including efficacy, safety, and cost.

Title translation How good are we really? Incidence of postoperative bleeding requiring intervention and intraoperative electrocoagulation during Thulium laser enucleation of the prostate.
Abstract The need for intervention due to postoperative bleeding represents a significant complication in Thulium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (ThuLEP). This study aimed to retrospectively analyse this complication in the treatment of benign prostatic enlargement. This study focuses on investigating potential causative factors for postoperative bleeding requiring intervention as well as the use of intraoperative electrocoagulation. A total of 503 ThuLEP procedures performed between 08/2021 and 07/2022 were examined. Postoperatively, 4.2% (n=21) of patients experienced bleeding requiring intervention. Study data revealed a significant association between these instances of bleeding and a high prostate volume (p=0.004), high enucleation weight (p=0.004), and intraoperative electrocoagulation (p=0.048). In total, intraoperative electrocoagulation was applied in 41.2% (n=207) of cases. In these cases, statistically significant factors leading to the application of electrocoagulation included intraoperative capsule perforation (p=0.005) and high enucleation weight (p=0.002).
