Abstract The Financial Kuznets Curve (FKC) is a variant of the renowned Kuznets Curve and a counterpart to the Environmental Kuznets Curve. In this paper, we examine the financial Kuznets curve hypothesis-based on annual data for 20 developed and developing countries-using the Phillips and Hansen (1990) fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS) and the unobserved components model (UCM). The results correspond to the current divergence in the empirical literature and show support for the inverted U-shaped curve as well as the U-shaped curve, in more than half of the sample countries. The estimated turning points differ significantly across countries and depending on the measure of financialisation used. Overall, the findings of this research suggest that there is no uniform effect of financialisation on income inequality. The results vary according to the level of economic development, financial structure, and potentially other factors that have not been considered in the empirical analysis provided in this paper.

Abstract Arab oil exporting countries have been advised by the IMF to diversify their economies away from oil and that the way to do that is to adopt the ten principles of the Washington Consensus, which call for liberalization, deregulation and privatization. It is not clear how measures like these are conducive to economic diversification, but the message is obvious—that diversification cannot be done without giving the private sector the driving seat and without the participation of multinationals through foreign direct investment. This paper presents a critical evaluation of the advice given by the IMF to Arab oil exporting countries and conveys a simple message to policy-makers in those countries: that they should handle with care the advice received from the IMF.

Abstract A statistical measure of the containment of Covid-19 is proposed to describe seven possible outcomes ranging from the worst outcome of ‘beyond control’ and the best outcome of ‘under control with rapid progress towards zero infections’. This measure is used to examine the performance of 10 countries with emphasis on the role of government-imposed measures of social distancing (lockdown, etc.). The results show that social distancing is effective, even though it is difficult to separate the effect of government measures from that of social distancing triggered by personal initiatives. The experience of Sweden shows that social distancing as a personal initiative is inadequate for the purpose of containing the virus. The experience of Brazil shows that taking the virus lightly brings about serious consequences.

Abstract The "density paradox" refers to the observation that some highly populated cities and countries have recorded a smaller number of Covid-19 cases than regions that are sparsely populated. We present empirical evidence on the role played by population density in spreading the coronavirus, based on cross-sectional data covering 172 countries (obtained from several sources, including the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the World Bank and the Center for Health Security). The results, obtained by using the techniques of extreme bounds analysis (EBA) and variable addition tests, show that population density has a significantly positive effect on the number of cases but not the number of deaths, as the latter is better explained by measures of preparedness. Plausible explanations are presented for the results to conclude that the "density paradox" is not really a paradox. This paper makes a contribution by shedding more light on a frequently debated issue by using a completely different, and more robust, statistical techniques and by providing results that may be helpful for health and urban planners.

Abstract Since the advent of the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s, a debate has ensued on whether the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should be reformed, abolished, or left as is because it is performing a good and useful job. In this paper, it is argued that the IMF should be abolished because its work, particularly in developing countries, has been useless at best and harmful at worst. Several reasons, as well as examples of how IMF operations have been detrimental to the welfare of people living in countries that the IMF is supposed to help, are presented to support this proposition.
