Abstract Background: Chronic kidney disease has a high prevalence in Pinar del Río, Cuba, and is one of the main causes of death; so, it is necessary to obtain information of interest that contributes to its knowledge. Objective: to determine the risk factors related to chronic kidney disease. Methods: a case-control study was carried out, with patients belonging to the Luis A. Turcios Lima Polyclinic 16 doctor's office, in Pinar del Río, from January-December 2019. The selection of participants was carried out randomly 1:2 (30 cases and 60 controls). The statistical analysis was based on a multivariate strategy, the determination of the Odds Ratio, with 95% confidence intervals, and the Chi Square test with a level of statistical significance of P <0.05. Sociodemographic variables, toxic habits, family history of chronic kidney disease and personal pathological history, among others, were analyzed. Results: the risk factors identified as having the highest incidence were age over 60 years old, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, personal pathological history of arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, as well as ischemic heart disease, obstructive uropathies and having relatives with chronic kidney disease. Conclusion: The main risk factors were the presence of the disease family history, as well as suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus. Other variables analyzed were also shown as such, but to a lesser extent.

Abstract: ... infraspecific morphological variation of V. planifolia in the San Luis Potosí Huasteca region, Mexico ... of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. ...

Abstract Vanilla planifolia is an orchid endemic to Mexico. It is important to characterize the morphological variation and to describe the morphological traits of its wild populations to enable use of this natural variation in agroecosystems and breeding programs. The objective of this study was to identify infraspecific morphological variation of V. planifolia in the San Luis Potosí Huasteca region, Mexico, where it is distributed naturally. We dissected 679 flowers from 40 accessions and subjected the labella to morphometric analysis, evaluating 76 morphological traits using an analysis of variance, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis. We found that there is highly significant variation among the accessions. The first three components explained 78% of the accumulated variance among groups. We identified four morphological groups, differentiated by the proximal lobe of the B region and the apical lobe of the F region, as well as the internal angles of the intermediate and lateral lobes of regions D and E. These angles determine labellum shape: rounded, bell-shaped, globular, or rhomboid. Morphotype I is oblanceolate shaped with tiny lobes. Morphotype II is bell-shaped, with long triangular lobes. Morphotype III is globular with large, wide lobes. Morphotype IV is rhomboid with very large lanceolate lobes. Morphological variation exists among V. planifolia specimens, which represent a strategic genetic resource in localities of San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

Abstract With more than 500 years of resistance indigenous peoples refuse to disappear, on the contrary, they try to prevail demanding recognition as different cultures; although they no longer have their original purity, their persistence shows the face of rural Mexico that suffers the onslaught of westernized culture. In this sense, the present paper explains the social representations that remain in force to reaffirm the identity of the Teenek of Tamaletom despite the marginalization and exclusion to which the dominant culture relegates them. The resultsobtained account for the cultural resistance of more than five centuries in which external values and modernity have not eroded the cultural heritage of this original people, due to the persistence and reworking of traditional forms of life that grant them Sense of belonging to the territory they occupy

Abstract There is little information on the population status of the ocelot Leopardus pardalis in Mexico. In the Sierra Abra-Tanchipa Biosphere Reserve, in San Luis Potosí, ocelots are affected by habitat loss and fragmentation as a result of increased agricultural development. We used photographic identification in camera-trapping capture–recapture surveys to determine population abundance and density during the dry season and subsequent early and late humid seasons during April 2011–March 2012. We recorded 80 photographs of 15 individuals (10 males, one female, and four of undetermined sex) in 7,786 camera-days. Abundance was estimated using a closed capture heterogeneity model, yielding an estimated population of 9 ± SE 3 in the dry season and 21 ± SE 8 and 15 ± SE 5 during the subsequent early and late humid seasons, respectively. Spatially explicit density estimates were 0.04 and 0.03–0.18 individuals per km2 for the dry and humid seasons, respectively, and were similar (P > 0.612) among seasons. Peaks in ocelot activity occurred during 20.00–04.00. We conclude that the ocelots of the Sierra Abra-Tanchipa Reserve have a low population density and may face geographical and biological isolation as a result of habitat conversion. Continued monitoring and improved understanding of the movements and habitat preferences of ocelots are necessary to ensure their continued persistence, and connectivity between this population and others in north-east Mexico.

Abstract The epidemiology of rotavirus infections was investigated in San Luis Potosí, Mexico during a 6-year period. In each of the study years, the epidemic period started in October or November; peak activity was detected between December and February, and the end of the epidemic occurred in March or April. Rotavirus infections show a consistent temporal pattern in our community.

Abstract: ... in water, fillet, liver and gills were determined in three stocked fish species from the Luis L. Leon ...

Abstract Concentrations of As, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb and Zn and activity concentrations from 234,238U and 210Po in water, fillet, liver and gills were determined in three stocked fish species from the Luis L. Leon reservoir, located in Northern Mexico. The considered species were Lepomis cyanellus, Cyprinus carpio and Ictalurus furcatus. 238U and 234U activity concentration (AC) in fillet samples showed values of 0.007-0.014 and 0.01-0.02 Bq∙kg-1 wet weight (ww), respectively. Liver samples for L. cyanellus, C. carpio and I. furcatus present 210Po AC of 1.16-3.26, 0.70-1.13 and 0.93-1.37 Bq∙kg-1 ww. Arsenic, mercury and lead concentration intervals in fillet samples were 0.13-0.39, 0.005-0.126 and 0.009-0.08 mg∙kg-1 ww, respectively, while in gill samples they were 0.11-0.43, 0.002-0.039 and 0.02-0.26 mg∙kg-1 ww. The elemental Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF) for fish tissues with respect to their concentrations in water was determined. L. cyanellus showed the highest BAF values for As and total U, being BAFAs = 37 and 40 L∙kg-1 in fillet and gills, respectively, and BAFU total = 1.5 L∙kg-1 in fillet. I. furcatus showed the highest BAF values for Hg and Pb, being BAFHg = 40 and 13 L∙kg-1 in fillet and gills, and BAFPb = 6.5 and 22 L∙kg-1 in fillet and gills, respectively. Some metal(loid) concentrations are slightly higher than European regulations for fish fillets. The difference in concentrations of metal(loid)s in fillet among the studied species is probably due to their differences in diet and habitat.
