Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about diverse impacts on the global population. Individuals with comorbidities were more susceptible to the severe symptoms caused by the virus. Within the crisis scenario, metabolomics represents a potential area of science capable of providing relevant information for understanding the metabolic pathways associated with the intricate interaction between the viral disease and previous comorbidities. This work aims to provide a comprehensive description of the scientific production pertaining to metabolomics within the specific context of COVID-19 and comorbidities, while highlighting promising areas for exploration by those interested in the subject. In this review, we highlighted the studies of metabolomics that indicated a variety of metabolites associated with comorbidities and COVID-19. Furthermore, we observed that the understanding of the metabolic processes involved between comorbidities and COVID-19 is limited due to the urgent need to report disease outcomes in individuals with comorbidities. The overlap of two or more comorbidities associated with the severity of COVID-19 hinders the comprehension of the significance of each condition. Most identified studies are observational, with a restricted number of patients, due to challenges in sample collection amidst the emergent situation.

Abstract Long-read sequencing methods allow a comprehensive analysis of transcriptomes in identifying full-length transcripts. This revolutionary method represents a considerable breakthrough for non-model species since it allows enhanced gene annotation and gene expression studies when compared to former sequencing methods. However, woody plant tissues are challenging to the successful preparation of cDNA libraries, thus, impairing further cutting-edge sequencing analyses. Here, a detailed protocol for preparing cDNA libraries suitable for high throughput RNA sequencing using Oxford Nanopore Technologies

Abstract The evaluation of the environmental impacts of chestnut production in the Beira Interior region (Portugal) is accessed. The comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed with the use of openLCA software with 16 Environmental Footprint (EF) impact categories retrieved from the AGRIBALYSE database. The system boundary was from "cradle-to-farm gate" and the functional unit was 1 ton of chestnut delivered to consumers (only wholesale buyers). The processes model for the production of agricultural machinery, pesticides, fertilizers, and materials was modeled based on surveys and existing literature. The data was gathered from four different production areas: Serra da Estrela, Malcata, Gardunha, and Plateau area. Each site has two selected representative producers inner 250 km

Abstract Objective: To verify the knowledge of nursing staff before and after training on incontinence-associated dermatitis.
Method: A study before and after an educational intervention carried out with nursing staff from the medical and surgical clinics and intensive care unit of the university hospital in June 2023. The training took place over three meetings. Data was collected using a questionnaire administered immediately before and after the training. McNemar's test for dependent samples was used to compare before and after training.
Results: 25 nurses and 14 nursing technicians took part. The items that showed statistical significance were related to the identification and correct differentiation of dermatitis associated with incontinence and pressure injury; and the correct way to sanitize the skin.
Conclusion: The training of the nursing team made it possible to assess their knowledge of how to identify, prevent and treat incontinence-associated dermatitis.

Abstract Background: Undiagnosed cases of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection result in significant morbidity and mortality, further transmission, and increased public health costs. Testing in emergency departments (EDs) is an opportunity to expand HCV screening. The goal of this project was to increase the proportion of eligible patients screened for HCV in urban areas.
Methods: An opportunistic automated HCV screening program was implemented in the EDs of 4 public hospitals in Spain and Portugal at different periods between 2018 and 2023. HCV prevalence was prospectively evaluated, and single-step or reflex testing was used for confirmation in the same sample.
Results: More than 90% of the population eligible for testing were screened in the participating centers. We found HCV antibody seroprevalence rates ranging from 0.6 to 3.9%, with between 19 and 53% of viremic individuals.
Conclusions: Opportunistic HCV screening in EDs is feasible, does not disrupt ED activities, is highly effective in increasing diagnosis, and contributes to WHO's HCV elimination goals.

Abstract Tobacco consumption and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure remains an important public health concern. Pregnant women require particular attention as active and passive smoking during pregnancy are associated with multiple adverse perinatal outcomes. This study aimed to biochemically validate self-reported smoking and ETS exposure status among pregnant women, to more precisely ascertain its association with adverse perinatal outcomes. Data refers to 595 pregnant women who sought prenatal care in a public hospital in Porto, Portugal. A standard questionnaire on smoking and ETS-related variables was completed. Urinary cotinine (UC) concentrations were assessed by solid-phase competitive ELISA, in maternal urine samples collected on the day of delivery. The results showed that the optimal UC cut-off value to distinguish smokers from non-smokers and within non-smokers those who were exposed to ETS from those non-exposed in the third trimester of pregnancy was 74.1 ng/mL (sensitivity and specificity of 96.7% and 98.0%, respectively) and 1.6 ng/mL (sensitivity of 66.2% and specificity of 75.7%, respectively). The agreement between maternal self-reported and UC-based smoking status was very good (κ=0.919, p<0.001), but much lower for ETS exposure (κ=0.386, p<0.001). Maternal active smoking in the third trimester of pregnancy was associated with a significant decrease in birth weight, length and head circumference of 157.66 g (95% CI: −245.81, −69.52; p<0.001), 0.78 cm (95% CI: −1.22, −0.34; p=0.001) and 0.39 cm (95% CI: −0.70, −0.07; p=0.016), respectively. Maternal ETS exposure in the third trimester of pregnancy was associated with a non-significant increase in birth weight of 38.37 g (95% CI: −28.91, 105.64; p=0.263). Furthermore, maternal smoking cessation was associated with the increase of approximately 172 g in birth weight (95% CI: 50.00, 293.19). As such, there is an urgent need for increased public health awareness campaigns to encourage smoking cessation during pregnancy, in order to improve perinatal outcomes.

Abstract Hemophilia A (HA) is a rare bleeding disorder characterized by reduced factor VIII (FVIII) activity and consequently spontaneous bleeding. Since the introduction of prophylaxis with safer FVIII concentrates, people with HA are ageing. Interestingly, they are developing cardiovascular diseases as their non-hemophilia counterparts. We describe a 48-year-old patient with severe HA who presented a third-degree atrioventricular block. A DDDR pacemaker was implanted under supervision of the Hematology Clinics. There were no adverse events during the procedure. The procedure was safe, and it should be performed under the supervision of a hemophilia expert.
