    Abstract Background: Virtual simulation-based education for healthcare professionals has emerged as a strategy for dealing with infectious disease disasters, particularly when training at clinical sites is restricted due to the risk of infection and a lack of personal protective equipment. This research evaluated a virtual simulation-based education program intended to increase nurses' perceived competence in providing psychological support to patients affected by infectious disease disasters.
    Methods: The efficacy of the program was evaluated via a randomized controlled trial. We recruited 104 nurses for participation in the study and allocated them randomly and evenly to an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was given a web address through which they could access the program, whereas the control group was provided with a web address that directed them to text-based education materials. Data were then collected through an online survey of competence in addressing disaster mental health, after which the data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences(version 23.0).
    Results: The analysis showed that the experimental group's disaster mental health competence (F = 5.149, p =.026), problem solving process (t = 3.024, p =.003), self-leadership (t = 2.063, p =.042), learning self-efficacy (t = 3.450, p =.001), and transfer motivation (t = 2.095, p =.039) significantly statistically differed from those of the control group.
    Conclusions: A virtual nursing simulation-based education program for psychological support can overcome limitations of time and space. The program would also be an effective learning resource during infectious disease outbreaks.
    Clinical trial registration: This Korean clinical trial was retrospectively registered (21/11/2023) in the Clinical Research Information Service ( https://cris.nih.go.kr ) with trial registration number KCT0008965.

    Abstract Background/objectives: This study investigated the association between dietary quality based on the Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI), and the prevalence of chronic conditions among middle-aged individuals (40-60 ys of age) living alone.
    Materials/methods: The participants were selected (1,517 men and 2,596 women) from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016-2018 and classified into single-person households (SPH) and multi-person households (MPH). Nutrient intake, KHEI, and the prevalence of chronic conditions were compared according to household size. The odds ratios (ORs) of chronic conditions were analyzed according to the tertile levels of KHEI by gender within each household size category.

    Conclusions: A healthy eating index was associated with a reduced risk of chronic conditions in middle-aged adults. Greater adherence to a healthy eating index could lower the risk of chronic conditions in middle-aged adults living alone.

    Abstract Objectives: In observational studies, the methods used to measure medication adherence may affect assessments of the clinical outcomes of drug therapy. This study estimated medication adherence to multidrug therapy in patients with hypertension using different measurement methods and compared their impacts on clinical outcomes.
    Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort database (2006-2015). Adults diagnosed with hypertension who initiated multidrug antihypertensive therapy in the index year 2007 were included. Adherence was defined as over 80% compliance. Adherence to multidrug antihypertensive therapy was measured in 3 ways using the proportion of days covered (PDC) with 2 approaches to the end-date of the study observations: PDC with at least one drug (PDCwith≥1), PDC with a duration weighted mean (PDCwm), and the daily polypharmacy possession ratio (DPPR). The primary clinical outcome was a composite of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease-specific hospitalizations or all-cause mortality.
    Results: In total, 4,226 patients who initiated multidrug therapy for hypertension were identified. The mean adherence according to the predefined measurements varied from 72.7% to 79.8%. Non-adherence was associated with an increased risk of a primary outcome. The hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals, CIs) primary outcomes varied from 1.38 (95% CI, 1.19 to 1.59) to 1.44 (95% CI, 1.25 to 1.67).
    Conclusions: Non-adherence to multidrug antihypertensive therapy was significantly associated with an increased risk of a primary clinical outcome. Across the varying estimates based on different methods, medication adherence levels were similar. These findings may provide evidence to support decision-making when assessing medication adherence.

    Abstract Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) encompasses various psychological symptoms and a high early dropout rate due to treatment unresponsiveness. In recent years, neurofeedback has been implemented to control PTSD's psychological symptoms through physiological brain regulation. However, a comprehensive analysis concerning its efficacy is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine neurofeedback's effect on reducing PTSD symptoms. We analyzed randomized and non-randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from 1990 to July 2020, evaluating neurofeedback treatments for those diagnosed with PTSD and their symptoms.     Abstract This study examined the association between dietary lifestyle and mental health outcomes among middle-aged individuals (40−60-year-olds) living alone, using the Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI). The participants were selected (1334 men and 2185 women) from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016−2018 and categorized into single/multi-person households. The KHEI scores were calculated based on the 24 h recall data of dietary intake. Among both sexes, single-person households had significantly lower subjective health status scores (p = 0.015 for men; p < 0.001 for women), lower EuroQol-5D index scores (p = 0.011 for men; p = 0.003 for women), and higher Patient Health Questionnaire-9 index scores (p = 0.004 for men; p < 0.001 for women), compared to multi-person households. Men had a higher risk of depression in single-person households compared to multi-person households (OR, 3.5; 95% CI, 1.2−10.1). For women, the ORs for stress perception with the first tertile group of KHEI scores in single-person and multi-person households compared to the third tertile group were 3.5 (95% CI, 1.3−9.0) and 1.4 (95% CI, 1.0−1.8), respectively. The results of this study are expected to be used as baseline data to establish nutrition, healthy eating behavior, and health policies for the middle-aged living alone.

    Abstract Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) has a significant advantage in histopathology as it helps in differentiating biological tissue structures and cells without the need for staining. To make this capability more accessible, it is crucial to develop compact and portable systems. In this study, we introduce a portable diffraction phase microscopy (DPM) system that allows the acquisition of phase map images from various organs in mice using a low-NA objective lens. Our findings indicate that the cell and tissue structures observed in portable DPM images are similar to those seen in conventional histology microscope images. We confirmed that the developed system's performance is comparable to the benchtop DPM system. Additionally, we investigate the potential utility of digital histopathology by applying deep learning technology to create virtual staining of DPM images.
