Abstract The ratios of branching fractions R(D^{*})≡B(B[over ¯]→D^{*}τ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{τ})/B(B[over ¯]→D^{*}μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}) and R(D^{0})≡B(B^{-}→D^{0}τ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{τ})/B(B^{-}→D^{0}μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}) are measured, assuming isospin symmetry, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0  fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The tau lepton is identified in the decay mode τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν_{τ}ν[over ¯]_{μ}. The measured values are R(D^{*})=0.281±0.018±0.024 and R(D^{0})=0.441±0.060±0.066, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The correlation between these measurements is ρ=-0.43. The results are consistent with the current average of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the predictions based on lepton flavor universality in the standard model.

Abstract: ... controls were evaluated for time- and frequency-domain heart rate variability based on a 5-min ECG R-R ...

Abstract Purpose: To test whether elite mountain bikers display a cardiac autonomic modulation pattern that is distinctive from that of active non-athletes.
Background: The relationship between autonomic adaptation and bradycardia during physical exercise, including high-performance sports such as the mountain biking, remains to be elucidated.
Methods: Twelve elite mountain bikers and 11 matched non-athletes controls were evaluated for time- and frequency-domain heart rate variability based on a 5-min ECG R-R intervals series obtained in both the supine and the orthostatic positions. Oxygen uptake and pulse rate were obtained at ventilatory thresholds and peak effort during an incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test. Significance of differences between medians (25th, 75th percentiles) from the two groups was evaluated by the Mann-Whitney test at p ≤ 0.05.
Results: Athletes had lower heart rate [50 (47, 59) versus 63 (60, 69) bpm; p = 0.0004] and higher cardiopulmonary performance than controls [70.9 (64.6, 74.4) versus 47.7 (41.0, 51.9) mL (kg min)(-1); p = 0.01]. No statistical difference was found in heart rate variability in the group of athletes (p = 0.17-0.97), except for trend toward having lower coefficient of variation and low-frequency absolute power indices both in supine position (p = 0.06).
Conclusions: Bradycardia and higher oxygen uptake were found in association with unaltered cardiac autonomic modulation in elite mountain bikers athletes in supine and orthostatic positions, compared to active non-athletes. This bradycardia was not dependent on distinctive resting autonomic modulation. Intrinsic adaptation of sinus node and/or a peculiar state of autonomic adaptation to this exercise can be possible mechanisms.

Abstract: ... Abstract Background: The literature established that, in patients without Boey's risk factors, laparoscopic repair of perforated peptic ulcers, compared to open repair, is associated to lower wound infection rate, less analgesic use, reduction in post operative pain, shorter hospital stay. Some of the main drawbacks are length of operative time and laparoscopic surgeon's experience in intracorporeal knotting. We, for first, report our preliminary experience of perforated peptic ulcers' laparoscopic repair using Medtronic U-Clip(R).
Methods: From January 2008 to June 2008 we performed laparoscopic repair of perforated peptic ulcers using Medtronic U-Clip(R) in 10 consecutive patients (6 men and 4 women, from 20 to 65 years-old of age). All the patients presented with iuxtapyloric perforated peptic ulcer, not greater than 10 mm, without signs of sepsis, free from major illnesses. The mini-invasive procedure was performed both by skilled and non-skilled laparoscopic surgeons under experts' surveillance. After it was recognized, perforation was sutured using U-Clip(R) in a full-thickness manner.
Results and discussion: We reported no surgical complications in the peri-operative period. The clinical outcome and time needed to perform the intervention didn't change between skilled and non-skilled surgeons. The follow-up at 30 days was good.
Conclusion: In our experience, the anastomotic device U-Clip(R) simplifies laparoscopic repair of perforated peptic ulcer, avoiding the need to perform knots and making the procedure safe and easier.

Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in humans and in animals leads to an acute and sustained increase in tissue glutamate concentrations within the brain, triggering glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity. Excitatory amino acid transporters (EAATs) are responsible for maintaining extracellular central nervous system glutamate concentrations below neurotoxic levels. Our results demonstrate that as early as 5 min and up to 2 h following brain trauma in brain-injured rats, the activity (Vmax) of EAAT2 in the cortex and the hippocampus was significantly decreased, compared with sham-injured animals. The affinity for glutamate (KM) and the expression of glutamate transporter 1 (GLT-1) and glutamate aspartate transporter (GLAST) were not altered by the injury. Administration of (R)-(-)-5-methyl-1-nicotinoyl-2-pyrazoline (MS-153), a GLT-1 activator, beginning immediately after injury and continuing for 24 h, significantly decreased neurodegeneration, loss of microtubule-associated protein 2 and NeuN (+) immunoreactivities, and attenuated calpain activation in both the cortex and the hippocampus at 24 h after the injury; the reduction in neurodegeneration remained evident up to 14 days post-injury. In synaptosomal uptake assays, MS-153 up-regulated GLT-1 activity in the naïve rat brain but did not reverse the reduced activity of GLT-1 in traumatically-injured brains. This study demonstrates that administration of MS-153 in the acute post-traumatic period provides acute and long-term neuroprotection for TBI and suggests that the neuroprotective effects of MS-153 are related to mechanisms other than GLT-1 activation, such as the inhibition of voltage-gated calcium channels.

Abstract The (R)-α-lipoyl-glycyl-L-prolyl-L-glutamyl dimethyl ester codrug (LA-GPE, 1) was synthesized as a new multifunctional drug candidate with antioxidant and neuroprotective properties for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Physicochemical properties, chemical and enzymatic stabilities were evaluated, along with the capacity of LA-GPE to penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) according to an in vitro parallel artificial membrane permeability assay for the BBB. We also investigated the potential effectiveness of LA-GPE against the cytotoxicity induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and H2O2 on the human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y by using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction assay. Our results show that codrug 1 is stable at both pH 1.3 and 7.4, exhibits good lipophilicity (log P=1.51) and a pH-dependent permeability profile. Furthermore, LA-GPE was demonstrated to be significantly neuroprotective and to act as an antioxidant against H2O2- and 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells.

Abstract: ... Each one of the CHS and PIP underwent a Holter electrocardiogram. The sinusal R-R intervals (SRRI ...

Abstract The present study investigates whether the disorder in nonlinear variability of human heart rate shows a periodic pattern along the 24-h scale in postinfarct patients (PIP). The aim is to detect whether there are chronoalterations between disorder and periodicity in heart rate variability (HRV) that can contribute to explaining the postinfarct risk of sudden cardiac death. The study was performed in 7 asymptomatic PIP, who have had an acute myocardial infarction, complicated by ventricular arrhythmias, three months prior to the research. The control group was constituted by 10 clinically healthy subjects (CHS). Each one of the CHS and PIP underwent a Holter electrocardiogram. The sinusal R-R intervals (SRRI) of each dynamic Holter monitoring were detected and partitioned in units of one hour to cover the 24-h span. The hourly-qualified values of the SRRI were analyzed in their disorder using the Information Entropy (E) method. The hourly-qualified mean values of both the SRRI and E were, further, analyzed for their eventual circadian rhythm (CR), via the Cosinor method. A clear nychtohemeral variability was found in the hourly-qualified mean values of both the SRRI and E. This variability during the day was found to have a significant CR. However, the oscillatory extent for the E CR was found to be less pronounced in PIP as compared to CHS. In addition, the oscillatory acrophase of the E CR was found to be shifted to the night in PIP as compared to CHS. The lack of the matutinal increase of disorder in HRV may be speculatively regarded as a mechanism for explaining why the PIP are more exposed to the risk of sudden cardiac death in the morning hours.
