Abstract The 17th century was a time of scientific discovery in Europe. Leading academic centers provided the general population with an opportunity to view anatomic dissections of human bodies. Rather than portray idealized versions of individuals, Dutch painters were committed to accurately representing their models. This was true for Johannes Vermeer. The 2023 exhibition of Vermeer's paintings at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam provided an unprecedented opportunity to observe 28 of his 37 existing paintings simultaneously in person. Here the authors suggest that in at least eight paintings a visibly pregnant woman is present. Vermeer's wife was pregnant or lactating most of the time during their 22-year marriage. Further, evidence of specific medical findings and congenital anomalies such as polydactyly, ectrodactyly, alopecia, kyphosis, and hyperthyroidism were observed in the paintings. These have not been previously reported in the medical or art history literature.

Abstract Thermal therapies treat tumors by means of heat, greatly reducing pain, post-operation complications, and cost as compared to traditional methods. Yet, effective tools to avoid under- or over-treatment are mostly needed, to guide surgeons in laparoscopic interventions. In this work, we investigated the temperature-dependent optical signatures of ex-vivo calf brain, lung, and heart tissues based on the reduced scattering and absorption coefficients in the near-infrared spectral range (657 to 1107 nm). These spectra were measured by time domain diffuse optics, applying a step-like spatially homogeneous thermal treatment at 43 °C, 60 °C, and 80 °C. We found three main increases in scattering spectra, possibly due to the denaturation of collagen, myosin, and the proteins' secondary structure. After 75 °C, we found the rise of two new peaks at 770 and 830 nm in the absorption spectra due to the formation of a new chromophore, possibly related to hemoglobin or myoglobin. This research marks a significant step forward in controlling thermal therapies with diffuse optical techniques by identifying several key markers of thermal damage. This could enhance the ability to monitor and adjust treatment in real-time, promising improved outcomes in tumor therapy.

Abstract Since the late '80s, CERN has pioneered the development of niobium thin film radio-frequency (RF) cavities deposited on copper substrates for several particle accelerator applications. However, niobium thin film cavities historically feature a progressive performance degradation as the accelerating field increases. In this study, we describe a temperature mapping system based on contact thermometry, specially designed to obtain temperature maps of niobium-coated copper cavities and, consequently, study the mechanisms responsible for performance degradation. The first temperature maps on a niobium/copper 1.3 GHz cavity are reported along with its RF performance. In addition to some hotspots displayed in the temperature maps, we surprisingly observed a temperature decrease in a limited portion of the cavity cell as the accelerating field increased. This may shed new light on understanding the heat dissipation of niobium thin film cavities in liquid helium-I, which might be exploited to improve the RF cavity performance.
