Abstract Purpose: The spine, hip, and knee are anatomically and biomechanically connected. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are commonly employed to treat degenerative changes in the hip and knee, while fusion is used for spine degeneration. Spine deformity correction results in changes in sagittal alignment and pelvic parameters, and patients with stiff spines have higher rates of THA dislocation and revision due to instability. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) in adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients at our institution.
Methods: Following Institutional Review Board approval, we retrospectively reviewed a list of cases performed by the senior author from 4/2017 to 5/2021. Patients > 18 years old undergoing preoperative evaluation for symptomatic lumbar degeneration or ASD were included. Patients < 18 years old, those diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, and non-fusion cases were excluded. Perioperative full-length standing EOS images were examined for the presence or absence of THA, TKA, or both. Demographic data was collected from patient electronic medical records, and statistical analyses were completed.
Results: 572 consecutive cases were reviewed, and 322 were excluded. 250 cases (97M:153F) were included in the final analysis, with a mean age of 61.8 ± 11.2 years. A total of 74 patients had a TJA (29.4%). THA was present in 41 patients (16.4%), and TKA was present in 49 patients (19.6%). Males had a higher prevalence of TJA, THA, and TKA (29.9%, 16.5%, and 21.6%) than females (29.4%, 16.3%, and 18.3%).
Conclusions: This study revealed a high prevalence TJA rate of 29.4% in ASD at our institution. This rate surpasses the prevalence rate reported among the general population in previous studies. High prevalence of patients with ASD and TJA may merit special surgical consideration.

Abstract The past 2 Myr have seen both unprecedented environmental instability and the evolution of the human capacity for complex culture. This, along with the observation that cultural evolution occurs faster than genetic evolution, has led to the suggestion that culture is an adaptation to an unstable environment. We test this hypothesis by examining the ability of human social learning to respond to environmental changes. We do this by inserting human participants (

Abstract Uterine leiomyomas are one of the most common reproductive pathologies in born females. The majority of women within reproductive age will develop a leiomyoma, most of which will be asymptomatic. Though there has been extensive research regarding this pathology alone, there is more to be learned about leiomyomas that affect women with other comorbidities. This case study reviews the medical and surgical management of a woman born with two uteri, medically termed congenital uterus didelphys. Within her reproductive years, she develops symptomatic leiomyomas in each of her uteri and seeks surgical management. This case study aims to widen the scientific knowledge surrounding these subsets of women with a common diagnosis superimposed on an extremely rare diagnosis.

Abstract Purpose: To place in context the potential value of isolated plasma strong ion difference (SID) calculations and strong ion gap (SIG) calculations versus suggested cut-down versions such as SIDa adj and the BICgap respectively.
Methods: Stewart's physical chemical approach is seen as a mathematical model of isolated plasma not displacing traditional Copenhagen and Boston approaches. Scanning tools for unmeasured ions based on the Principle of Electrical Neutrality such as the SIG and suggested cut-down versions such as the albumin adjusted anion gap and the BICgap are evaluated for accuracy and clinical usefulness.
Results: Plasma SID and abbreviations such as SIDa adj are not independent variables in vivo since they vary with PCO due to Gibbs Donnan ion traffic. They can also exhibit positive and negative bias, and SID values must be partnered with non-volatile weak acid concentrations when evaluating metabolic acid-base status. The BICgap calculation is a cut down version of the SIG fixed for pH 7.4. It includes phosphate but is otherwise similar in form to the albumin corrected anion gap, with similar sensitivity and specificity characteristics.
Conclusions: Clinicians are unlikely to find SID calculations or cut-down versions such as the SIDa adj clinically useful. The albumin corrected anion gap is in current use and easily determined by mental arithmetic from point of care anion gap printouts plus recent plasma albumin measurements. Any slight advantage of the BICgap would be offset by the complexity of its calculation.

Abstract The density of epidermal ridges in a fingerprint varies predictably by age and sex. Archaeologists are therefore interested in using recovered fingerprints to learn about the ancient people who produced them. Recent studies focus on estimating the age and sex of individuals by measuring their fingerprints with one of two similar metrics: mean ridge breadth (MRB) or ridge density (RD). Yet these attempts face several critical problems: expected values for adult females and adolescent males are inherently indistinguishable, and inter-assemblage variation caused by biological and technological differences cannot be easily estimated. Each of these factors greatly decreases the accuracy of predictions based on individual prints, and together they condemn this strategy to relative uselessness. However, information in fingerprints from across an assemblage can be pooled to generate a more accurate depiction of potter demographics. We present a new approach to epidermal ridge density analysis using Bayesian mixture models with the following key benefits:•Age and sex are estimated more accurately than existing methods by incorporating a data-driven understanding of how demographics and ridge density covary.•Uncertainty in demographic estimates is automatically quantified and included in output.•The Bayesian framework can be easily adapted to fit the unique needs of different researchers.
