Abstract This systematic review aimed to synthesize the current evidence on the feasibility of volitional reaction time (RT) tests to evaluate the information processing abilities of athletes. Four databases were searched, and, finally, 38 studies exploring the reliability, validity, or sensitivity of RT tests were included. Seven studies explored the reliability, which ranged from poor to excellent, while only three studies explored the validity of RT tests. The most important downside of the majority of the implemented RT tests is their nonspecific nature (i.e., stimulus and response did not resemble the sports actions). Sports scientists should focus on developing RT tests that are specific for each sport and refine the testing procedures to obtain accurate, reproducible, and sensitive measurements of RT.

Abstract Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the strength capacities of the injured and non-injured leg following a unilateral anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
Methods: Eight elite soccer players (age = 25.5 ± 3.9 years; height = 1.83 ± 0.04 m; body mass = 78.9 ± 4.5 kg) volunteered to participate in this study. Nine months after the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and just before initiating the full training process, the maximal peak torque of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles were measured at 60 and 180 degrees/ second using isokinetic dynamometry. Obtained peak torques were used for calculating hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio, limb symmetry index, and to estimate maximal torque capacity using a two-velocity method (i.e., linear torque-velocity relationship modeled considering peak torque obtained at 60 and 180 degrees/second).
Results: No differences were found between hamstring-to- -quadriceps ratios of the injured and non-injured leg ( p = 0.165), nor between limb symmetry index of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles ( p = 0.985), regardless of the angular velocity applied during tests. The two-point method revealed significant differences between quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups both in the injured and non-injured leg ( p < 0.001; maximal estimated torque was higher for quadriceps compared to hamstring muscles), while the differences between same muscle groups of the different legs were not significant.
Conclusions: Collectively, these findings indicate that 9 months were enough for reaching a certain strength level of the injured leg that permits a safe return to play.

Abstract Background: Percutaneous radiofrequency nucleoplasty is a true minimally invasive technique for treatment for radiculopathy caused by contained disc protrusions. This minimally invasive procedure uses controlled thermoablation for reducing the intervertebral disc and decompressing the lumbar nerve root. Material and Methods: Our study is a prospective analysis of 27 patients aged from 30 to 64 years with lumbar disc protrusion who were treated with percutaneous radiofrequency disc decompression (PRFD) between May 2018 and May 2019. Clinical follow-up was reported at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. The outcomes were assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS) and MacNab score.
Results: Of the 27 patients, 14 were female and 13 were male. Their mean age was 53 ± 2 years. In all 27 patients, percutaneous radiofrequency nucleotomy was performed. An excellent outcome as reflected by MacNab score was observed in 17 patients (63%), a good outcome in 8 patients (29.7%), and a poor outcome in 2 patients (7.3%). Prior to treatment, the average back and leg VAS scores were 7.95 and 7.82, respectively. At sixth month follow-up, the back and leg VAS scores were reduced to 3.17 and 3.04, respectively. Patients with a poor outcome developed early recurrent disc prolapse and required endoscopic discectomy.
Conclusion: PRFD is a safe and effective treatment of contained disc protrusion. PRFD is a good alternative to surgery. These procedures significantly increase quality of life in patients with lumbar radiculopathy.

Abstract We present a portable multiplexed biosensor platform based on the extended gate field-effect transistor and demonstrate its amplified response thanks to gold nanoparticle-based bioconjugates introduced as a part of the immunoassay. The platform comprises a disposable chip hosting an array of 32 extended gate electrodes, a readout module based on a single transistor operating in constant charge mode, and a multiplexer to scan sensing electrodes one-by-one. Although employing only off-the-shelf electronic components, our platform achieves sensitivities comparable to fully customized nanofabricated potentiometric sensors. In particular, it reaches a detection limit of 0.2 fM for the pure molecular assay when sensing horseradish peroxidase-linked secondary antibody (∼0.4 nM reached by standard microplate methods). Furthermore, with the gold nanoparticle bioconjugation format, we demonstrate ca. 5-fold amplification of the potentiometric response compared to a pure molecular assay, at the detection limit of 13.3 fM. Finally, we elaborate on the mechanism of this amplification and propose that nanoparticle-mediated disruption of the diffusion barrier layer is the main contributor to the potentiometric signal enhancement. These results show the great potential of our portable, sensitive, and cost-efficient biosensor for multidimensional diagnostics in the clinical and laboratory settings, including e.g., serological tests or pathogen screening.
